Just to follow up on what we actually did on our visit to Japan.

We rented a portable/pocket WiFi hotspot from Sakura mobile. Booked it on their website in advance and it was waiting at Haneda when we arrived.

They supplied and envelope to drop it into at the end and put in a postbox at Haneda on the way out. Super simple and trouble free.

The only downside is we had to reboot it daily as it would lose the cell service, but that was not a massive drama. You can tether a while bunch of devices which was convenient with two phones and two tablets. Worked fine on the Shinkansen too (even in all the tunnels).

Your carrier shouldn't be able to region lock wifi calling. Either it works or it doesn't.
VoLTE and VoWifi are special. The first only works on the APN of the provider, second is usually whitelisted for ISPs in the home country for security and roaming €€€. VPN and travelling drops you back to normal voice channel.

I haven't seen a provider that enables VoWifi on foreign networks.

[edit] ah fuck it was a thread necro... But nowadays I just provision a APAC eSIM for anyone travelling to HK/China/Thailand/Japan with roaming there too. Pretty cheap and works everywhere. Exact provider differs. Sometimes a physical SIM, HK CSL is cheap for data and roaming.

No worries. Still good info. I’ve been using the app “Nomad” to get local eSIMs and have never had issues with wifi calling or VoLTE with my US number.
