Decided to browse Tubi, and saw a movie I heard about on a 'most awful thing ever' list: Candy

Sure, those were different times, but this movie is some cringe rapey book adaptation awfulness. If you want to see some big-name actors from the 1960s be pervy whackadoos, this is the movie for you. I made it through Myra Breckinridge and Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls feeling kind of entertained, but not this one.

Further thoughts on Mars Express.
  • The animation is really good. It’s very different from the anime that I’ve been watching, and I really appreciate it. The detail on the facial expressions that Aline pulls whenever she realizes that she may have done something that was exactly kosher? Very good. Example? She commits a mistake, and looks sheepish - it’s one of the best animations that represent ‘sheepish’ I’ve seen.
  • I bounced back and forth between the original French audio and the English dub several times through the film. I like both sets of voice actors. It felt like the only real adjustments in the translation were to use idiomatic expressions that have the same context but make more sense in one language versus the other. The English subtitles are for the French Audio, and display the same text for the English audio and doesn’t exactly match, especially with idioms and turns of phrase that make more sense in English.
  • The vibe of this world is both very cool and dystopian as fuck.
  • I kind of called the villains about a quarter of the way through, but I didn’t have the full motivations until a bit later.
  • I really appreciated that it was just under 90 minutes long.
I felt it was more than worth the $5 to rent it.

Pluto.TV, the excellent free streaming service, has an Action/Drama channel that’s been playing Miami Vice during the day and switches to The A-Team at 5pm.

Well, they had on The A-Team season 5 two part premiere. The one where they go to trial and fake their own executions to escape and work for the shadowy Hunt Stockwell.

That’s some damn fine 80’s TV right there.

Fun fact, the season 4 finale featured Tia Carrere as a guest star. She was supposed to be a full team member for season 5 but couldn’t get out of her General Hospital contract.

Wow, finally caught The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare last night, and it was great! The only thing that weirded me out was that as a Guy Ritchie movie he didn't kill off most of the main cast?!
The book the film is based on is fantastic as well. I haven’t watched the film yet (soon), but my understanding is that the film covers the first… oh… quarter of the book? If that?

Shorts of The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare are popping up in my YouTube feed. I enjoyed them and I definitely want to see that one. It is streaming anywhere?

In other very related news, I finished The Gentleman (Series). I was thoroughly entertained, it was IMHO really good. GREAT production values, good cast, good scripts, witty dialogues. And Gypsies! Ritchie can never go wrong with Gypsies :judge: :biggreen:

And yet, The Gentleman (Movie) is IMHO in every way better. Jesus ... Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrel, Hugh Grant, Charlie Hunnam and Michelle Dockery shine in their roles so brightly that you need sunglasses watching this movie. Even now, I have a smile thinking about the many, many memorable scenes.

In other news, I binged Three Body Problem hard. I was very annoyed at the portrayal of the engineering/science council of getting up with a way to send a 0.01c probe. VERY ANNOYED. They would be arguing about the myriad ways and details on how to do it. Because there are multiple approaches. And not one-upping each other why it is impossible.
Also, wouldn't establishing a Mars presence basically completely defeat the alien surveillance?

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare isn't streaming yet. Lionsgate has deals with Starz and Peacock for streaming some of their theatrical releases, so it might show up on one of those streaming platforms, maybe when it hits the 90-day mark in mid-July.

It is available to rent on Amazon Prime, no idea what streaming service will get it, though.

I have resumed my watch of Godzilla movies. Thankfully, we seem to be past the era of kids and goofy comedy that pervaded the sixties and early half of the seventies.

I'm on Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975) which ... well, still aliens. That's a pretty common theme in a lot of the movies so far. Lots of things that don't make sense but you kinda go with it. Couple things surprised me in this one.

The thing that really stood out for me was the introduction of Godzilla. He doesn't show up for awhile, and when he does, they actually make an effort to make it dramatic. There is actually a nice bit of cinematography for a Godzilla movie here. He rises up in silhouette, and then they cut in close and the lighting changes so you see his angry face as he roars out. These movies are usually simply shot. Basic point and shoot... The first couple films had some really nice shots, but most have been about getting all the action in. This was a rare moment of an attempt at dramatic effect. I am curious how that went down. Did someone fight for it? Was it intentional? Was it a moment of inspiration?

What does that mean for future movies?

When I was a kid, there were a handful of Godzilla movies that would get shown. A few of those terrible ones from the sixties, the first mechagodzilla movie, the first two movies, and of course the ones with Rodan, Monster Zero, and Mothra. For me, Godzilla movies were things of the past. I don't think I realized those movies were still being made until that fake Godzilla movie in the 90s. Which I contend is a decent monster movie, but a terrible Godzilla movie. And even then, I don't think I realized until much later that there had been more Japanese Godzilla movies being made throughout the eighties and nineties and beyond.

So that means I am about to enter into uncharted territory. I don't think I have seen any of the movies from this point forward. I could be wrong. We'll see.
