Perpetual UK Politics Thread Part Two

It won't dissuade any of the people who are voting for Reform because they're racist homophobes, no.

It's the ones who believe it when they're told it's not really like that and think they're voting for a political outsider who isn't part of The System which they think is failing them that might, if they hear about it, think "Oh, maybe these are a bit too far over the edge".

It’s half beer half lemonade.
And, really, should only be made with Bass bitter. :)

Side note: making a bitter shandy seems to be a lost art for most bar staff, since I have to talk them through the process every time. It’s: half a pint of lemonade into the glass first. Take a drink stirrer (or use the handle end of a fork or spoon) and vigorously stir until you’ve knocked most of the gas out of the lemonade. If there’s a sparkler on the beer tap, take it off. Fill the remaining half pint of the glass with beer.

We usually end up in the pub after me HEMA class, and a shandy is a fantastic way of taking the edge off your thirst after being sweaty waving swords about for a few hours. (Open invitation to my class if you are in London)
Agreed. You have one sip of it and you're not feeling thirsty anymore.

Meanwhile, the US/UK trade deals are basically scuttled just before the election:

Looks like the Conservatives still found something to trash...
On the other hand, trade deals with US States is not worth the paper its written on generally speaking, it looks nice for the dimwits but the only thing worth having is trade deals with sovereign nations.

Getting co-opted onto committees to review fairly uninteresting (to them) subjects would likely be these guys idea of hell. They would rapidly get found out.
They wouldn't turn up. Farage turned up once to the EU Parliament Fisheries Committee, despite UKIP's making such a ridiculous fuss over fishing as part of its Brexit lie package.

Wait, what? You guys use carbonated lemonade?!?

You can get Limonata cans here but thats about it on that front; it usually a flat beverage here

One thing to say for Mr. Sunak, he's certainly staying on message, even if many of the electorate have stopped listening. Sunday morning talk interviews: he says the UK is better off than it was 14 years ago, and with benefits from Brexit. He promises more tax cutting to enhance peoples' economic security.

Polls haven't budged, and neither has he. He's quite poor as a politician, but he appears to be ready to take one for the team. So there is that.

The Reform candidate for Erewash has disowned Reform because of widespread racism & sexism.

He also said:
Asked whether he accepts the view of some businesses that Brexit has made things more difficult, he says he was proud to support Brexit and that cutting red tape has helped British exports
This is someone who clearly has never dealt with exporting goods. The company I work for exports products around the world and a lot got to the EU. The grumblings from the people who deal with the export paperwork were quite clear in the fact that the amount has gone up since Brexit.

The import/export clusterfuck has also been repeatedly in the news, both in the UK and Europe. It's a prime example of how to not organise custom checks of goods.

So the man must be living under a stone.

If the actor was actually paid, you'd have thought that he might at least have used a false name. IMHO either he wanted to get caught, or he is really like that.
What actor in what video? The link you repeated doesn't clarify that at all.

edit: never mind. I had to search for "actor" to find it though. It was way down the page, and there appears to be no direct link. As far as the story says it's only claimed by Farage that the guy was a paid actor and the story was fake news.
to wit:
Farage has claimed the racist comments were a "set-up" and the party volunteer was an actor. The Prime Minster has said the comment "hurts and it makes me angry".
Since when do people take what Farage claims as fact?

Getting rid of most of the import/export paperwork was one of the main goals and accomplishments of the EU.

anyone that ever believed Brexit would make things simpler was a sucker. Anybody that still believes it now is... there are no words.

Well, you are no longer bound by EU regulations... Right? That's how that works? Right? It couldn't be that now you have to do more work proving you meet them? Right?

Unfortuantely, the corollary to the phrase "there's one born every minute" is that if there are a lot of suckers out there then they are an important demographic who need to be at least considered, if not fully won over.

And won over they were.

The FT and the Economist both believe in rational evidence based policy making, which has placed them firmly left of most UK media since 2015

Slightly different, measuring the audience rather than the editorial line - https://redfieldandwiltonstrategies.com/westminster-voting-intention-by-media-consumption-7-10-june/ has the papers in a graph that I can't find on their twitter feed. Both are in the middle when sorting by the voting intention of their audience, but if you weight by circulation, I think more people are reading the titles to the right of them than to the left. Maybe paying for would be more accurate, maybe the Metro balances out the Sun and the Daily Mail. The Evening Standard is also somewhat lower in the graph (sorted by Labour support) than it should be, a higher number of don't knows and others (presumably Green?) and fewer Conservative and Reform voters than its neighbours.

And for TV, Conservatives doing relatively well with the Russia Today audience

Looking at https://www.politico.eu/europe-poll-of-polls/united-kingdom/ , both Con and Lab are polling worse than during the Truss years days.

Interesting that only Lib Dems and Reform seem to have improved their ranking in the last month. Lab and Con have fallen - the other have remained pretty much static. Would be interesting to know where they are getting their votes from. It seems (based on the info on that chart) that Labour must be losing a bit to Reform, as the total change isn't enough to easily be to the other parties. Also interesting that the Lab / Don difference has remained pretty much static - they've both followed an almost identical downward trajectory.

Once again, the only person who has any fun during this campaign is Ed Davey.

Who went bungee jumping today.

The Tory comms folk must wish they were working for the Lib Dems right now.
