I think it was the Orioles who actually kindled my love of this game back in the day. 3 20-game winners. Brooks Robinson. Boog. I've lived here for 9 years, could literally take a bus to the game (on a somewhat elongated time frame but still a daytrip) and have never stepped foot into Camden Yards.

It's time. Phillies are in Baltimore early next month, as of today they have the two best records in the league, and I need a couple days off. If only I could figure out how to make my phone buy tickets; the seat I want will probably be gone by the time I get home. :p
1) I'm jealous. Camden is in my top 10 of ball parks. I'd love to see more meaningful baseball there in person - the one game was just a tease!

2) Did you get 'em?!

Skenes struck out 7, he looked real good.

I love Camden. We used to go up there all the time from DC before the Nats moved in. Now that the Angelos are gone maybe I need to make a trip back there.

The game I saw there was Nats and O's.

Nat's jumped out to a 6-to-nothing lead on 3x Zimmerman homers through 6 innings.
The Orioles won that game, 9 to 6. It was a fantastic game! Absolutely FULL house, and I can distinctly hear the chants of "Nick-Mar-Ka-Kis" rattling off the windows and bricks in my head, 11 years later, if I think about it for a few minutes. Good times.

1) I look forward to the trip report :) I think one of the last MLB games I went to was WAS @ COL when Harper was still a Nat, so I'm 99% sure I've seen him in person but I'd love to get to a Phillies game just to be sure
2) While 3 20-game winners is technically correct, it also sells the pitching staff a little short... there were four of them (though Jim Palmer is only one I can name off the top of my head)
3) Camden Yards is my favorite place to hear the national anthem

One of the last times I went to a game, I met up with some friends at Pickles Pub I think it's a fairly well-known bar among Orioles faithful (it struck me as the type bar that would not be out of place in Wrigleyville, except for the orange and black decor instead of blue and red), though I had never heard of it and have only been the once. Excellent place to hang out* before the gates open if you get to town early, and you can see the stadium from the front door.

* assuming you are going to a game in 2009, but it probably hasn't changed much in 15 years

I'll waive to you if it's the same one I have tickets to.

😳
Yeah. The only question is if he's Kerry Wood, Justin Verlander, or Roger Clemens when it comes to career stats and trophies..

I hope the Pirates ownership finally opens the wallet for once in their lives - would be cool to see the Pirates competitive for the next 5-10 years. They've also got 5 other arms with 2/3 potential in the minors.

Just bought tickets for the games I’m going to go see with my folks in Arizona at the end of next month. One game, we’re in the very back of a box - easy ingress and egress, on the aisle - right behind the visitor (Twins) dugout.

The other game? We’re four rows from the field, just to the left of home plate. Those cost a pretty penny, but hey, it’s for my birthday!

Not gonna lie, I'm not really a fan of this. I'm very much pro-Negro leagues and I think some of their best teams could have beaten the WS teams but I think keeping them separate is a better idea.

Eh. I'm good with it.
You have overall, then National League/American League/Negro Leagues bests and records.

There is a LOT more to it than that, but overall? Sure. It's fine.

I'm a little torn -- on one hand, it feels like MLB co-opting something that it doesn't have rights to (and the fact that the way MLB operated led directly to the foundation of the Negro League really adds to the ick factor), but on the other hand MLB is kind of shorthand for "top level American professional baseball" so it makes sense to include the Negro Leagues while leaving the Japanese league (NPB?) out*.

In the end, it sounds like something the curators of the Negro League history and records really wanted - to me, that removes a lot of the "is it appropriation?" doubt and puts it squarely in the "good thing" category.

* On re-reading, this mention of NPB seems like it came out of left field... I had this train of thought "if MLB includes Negro League stats because those players were as talented as MLBers, why not also include NPB stats because those players also are as talented as MLBers?" that somehow ended up as a random mention of the Japanese league

I mean, I think MLB, NPB, Negro League, Korean League, Minor league, etc should all be separate. I think it's fine to say oh Player X in NPB has the best overall batting average of .380 but Player Y has the most for the MLB.

Someone hit the most homers in the Korean League but it may only make him top 5(hypothetically) if all were combined.

Part of an issue I have is, at least from what I read, there are missing records of Negro League games. I'm not saying it would change a lot, but what if Gibson had a 0-30 or 30-30 streak that didn't get reported? Also, Gibson played 16 years and 510 games. Williams played 19 seasons but 2200 games. Again, I'm very much pro Josh Gibson, I had a knockoff Grays jersey that I wore for ages before finally splurging on an Ebbets field one(which, off topic, I'd highly recommend to anyone)

Some game details were obtained from newspapers that covered the Black communities. Johnson said complete accounts were found for about 95% of games in the 1920s, but coverage dropped off during the Great Depression in the 1930s and never fully recovered.

The big difference for me with NPB/KBO is that they're other countries altogether. The Blue Jays and Expos are too but they play(ed) in MLB, so.
What's the analogy with American football? I feel like people still talk about "pre-merger" in some contexts, but does the NFL record book imply "post-merger"? Does it include AFL records from the before times? Is it apples and oranges since the football leagues actually merged and the Negro Leagues folded in the late-40s / early-50s as many star players moved to the majors lowering the overall quality of the teams they left behind?

I'm no authority but I believe the AFL records got folded in, when you look at the NFL Record and Fact book, for example, they have Steelers numbers going back to 1933. I see your point about absorption vs defection. but the difference I would say there is the AFL player had the option of joining the NFL if he wanted, where, say, Josh Gibson did not have the option to play in the American League.

Yeah, I just saw that on the top of the main page of CNN. Right next to Hunter Biden shenanigans as the top news headlines of the morning.

I mean, I thought all the young’uns learned this. You can take PEDs and MLB will slap you on the wrist. Criminal charges and allegations can be levied against you, and you can find a way back to the game from that.

Bet on ball games, especially ball games that you are playing in? MLB will launch you into the sun, do not pass go, goodbye, you’re outta here.
