Forgot to take a picture, but I had a duck madras last night, which was spectacular. One of my favourite pubs has rented out their kitchen to an Indian 'street food' company which delivers consistently excellent and unusual curries. Because it's run by Indian Hindhus rather than Pakistani/Bangladeshi Muslims (who run the vast majority of curry houses restaurants in the UK) you get stuff that you just don't see on the menu in most regular restaurants — they've also done a pork vindaloo that was fantastic.

So… if you find yourself in Nottingham with a yearning for a decent pint and great curry, pop along to the Keans Head, next to St Mary's Church in the Lace Market.

Here endeth the plug. :D

I have a dozen rhubarb plants in my garden. I get 6-10 lbs a season, depending on how ambitious I am about picking. So, I end up making a lot of strawberry rhubarb pies.

Oh that's awesome. Rhubarb has been very limited in California, and I missed it this year in the local farm. There's always next year or Japan. Amazingly, rhubarb has become very popular in Japan in recent years!

I think we need a "What makes bad fries?" thread. I don't see anything there that makes me think those are bad. I approve of the visible pepper, whether they came that way or Yagisama has already dressed them.

I have never been to a Popeye's, though, so I'm not sure what their fries are supposed to look like.

I'm of the opinion that there is no wrong style of fried potato. I also think it's hard to really screw them up. Most of the things that make them bad are things that happen between them coming out of the fryer and when they are actually consumed.

Not undercooked. Not soggy. Not cold. Those are really the only requirements.

There can be really good fries, but once you've gotten to "not bad" there are minimal gains.

Could be pepper i guess, looks like specks of long ago deep fried food cooked in old grease. Properly cooked fries should be golden yellow/brown with an outside crunch but hot soft potato inside.

Those are how Popeyes fries look. They are pre-seasoned and are amazing, for about 5 minutes. Then they become the most inedible fry ever created.

The only good thing that came out of the terrible movie Jack Reacher: Never Go Back was the "never go back" part which became the name of my rule regarding french fries in general. I usually eat fries with a burger or sandwich and once I get to the burger I never go back to the fries. The Popeye's fries are definitely in the "never go back" category since they're really good but fall off very quickly.

I had a girlfriend in high school who was into making overly dyed cakes. She was mostly into shades of purple, but one time she made me a deep red cake with bright blue frosting and it totally looked like eating a smurf (or what I would imagine that to look like). I had no money and was couch surfing for the summer while my family was on extended vacation, so that cake was like 90% of my calories for a week. I still get kind of jittery when I see smurfs.

My favorite basic veggie burger patties (not panties, stupid autocorrect) are no more in Whole Foods.

BUT they're been replaced with something that looks more like the major brands and costs double. I tried it and it's pretty good. And honestly they looked like sorry hockey pucks before so maybe it's worth the price increase.

Shish tawook and kofta (2x beef, 2x lamb) with aish baladi & sides. Split this with my partner. Sometimes you find the tastiest food at little strip malls close to events you're attending. Probably will never come back to this part of the city but if I do I'm headed here again too.
