TIL that, after the success of the Urusei Yatsura reboot, there's now going to be a Ranma 1/2 reboot as well. I'm a little conflicted.
As much as I loved Ranma 1/2 when I was a twenty-something who regularly went to Little Tokyo to pick up new "raw" episodes every few weeks, I don't think Ranma, as it was originally written, would do so well now. It was one of the pioneers of some very popular tropes (particularly harem shows with clown casts), but people who didn't experience it the first time will see it as too derivative. Unlike Urusei Yatsura, which had no respectable/likeable protagonists (which was part of the running gags), Ranma's biggest draw is its large cast of characters, many of which are thirsting for either Ranma or Akane... or both. I'd want a rewrite on the characters, to make at least Ranma, Akane, and Shampoo a bit less of stereotypical trope bait, and plan out a through-line on relationships. Show a growing respect between Ranma and Akane over time, at least, and not just keep reverting to the "You saw my boobs, so I have to pound you, even though it might be my fault (and I might be a little jealous of the fact your boobs are slightly bigger)" gag over and over. And make Shampoo have a little more depth to her character as well, while we're at it.
