Amazing how quickly that escalated. A 3 second mistake on the pit stop getting the front left off and having to let Norris by on pit lane narrowed the gap to DRS, then it all went downhill. MV should have let him through then skated past on his own DRS run.

And then penalties for everyone.

Roused awake on that lap. Rewinding right now to see what I had missed inbetween.
Don't rewind too far, just a couple of escalations in the 6 laps before that led to that. The track limit investigation (usually an auto penalty) was noted in enough time that RBR could have stood down the intensity; seems likely to be a little bit of posturing for future races.

Yeah Max should have given back the place, and just wait for the inevitable tracklimit penalty for Norris..
Yeah, Redbull had already told him that Lando had gotten a black and white flag for track limits. Just wait him out and keep close. He might not have had the pace to keep Lando behind him, but he certainly had the pace to keep within 5 seconds.

I went back and I nodded off a lap before the two of them pitted. I would nave never fell asleep if I saw the slow stop that Max had. To me Max was over the line in moving in the braking zone. Dunno if there is anything going to be done post-race, but I do think Max some of his moves were over the line (in addition to the collision).

At work on Friday a co-worker asked me who would win. I said the podium would be Lando, Lewis, then Max. I thought that was a kinda out there prediction, but the actual podium was even more unexpected :).

Just saw that the stewards gave him 2 points.
Was there anything said about the run towards turn 4 after the incident where Max pushed Lando onto the grass on the right, trying to keep him from getting by? This was before it seemed either realized they had flat tires.

Not from the stewards that I have seen, but they showed and talked about it a couple of different times during the Sky post-race show.

Wow.
Um.

I'll have to unpack that later. But I will say this:

WELL DONE HAAS!
Great race by Haas. Good decision making by the team, and really great driving to get those positions. Hulkenberg did great to get P6 back right at the death.

The Perez extension looking like less if s good decision after every race at the moment too.

Perez finished 17 seconds behind his teammate who had to limp back to the pit with a puncture, had some slow pitstops and also a 10 second penalty. He also finished behind a Haas.

Edit: Perez had a 5 second penalty for speeding in the pitlane. That was the only moment in the race where he was fast.

Bitterly disappointed at that one. There was no need for things to end as they did. Verstappen needs to learn how to race cleanly and fast, or else this year, more races will become farcical, just like in 2021.

The most galling moment for me was his comment about Lando: "He's just dive bombing; that's not how you overtake." This coming from the king of the 2021 dives on Hamilton that regularly went over the line but also unpunished

On to Silverstone ...

I am going to block a certain phone number from texts soon.

I wake up 5 minutes ago. I’m waiting for a text for something else.
Max and Lando FAFO, George wins!

Motherfucker! Not the result, I’ll watch later, but the way I just found out?! 😖
I had it spoiled for me, too, but it was kind of my own fault. I got signed out of the F1TV app on my AppleTV and when I unlocked my iPad to get the password, it was open to Firefox and the F1 homepage where I'd been checking the schedule Friday morning. Before it dawned on me what was happening, I read "Russel takes shock...". I immediately looked away and hoped it was about the sprint qualifying or something besides the grand prix. Nope.

It was still interesting to guess what was going to happen at the front. For a moment, I thought both Lando and Max would accrue enough penalties that George would get the win while finishing third on the track. I don't know how I would have felt about that, but I was hoping for something other than the predictable incident that ended up happening.

In 2021, Lewis was just bad at racing. He admitted as much. For years, he hadn't really gotten many chances to race from behind and never had to defend.

Max hasn't forgotten how to fight at all. He's just forgotten what it's like to be the underdog, trying to get by a car that's equal or faster than yours. Whining about dive-bombing is laughable. Lando's attempts are so similar to Max's of 2019-2021, where he would be able to barely make the turn after braking way later than his opponent. Sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn't, but it was typically an amazing show of skill, not just trying to run others off the road, as many accused him of at the time. Having lived through that just a few years ago, you'd think he'd be more tolerant of Lando doing the same thing.

I figured Max was just doing the things he was doing in 2021 since he was pushing for that first title. Granted, he had been driving like that in the years prior to that, but I just kind of assumed he was going to be a little cleaner now that has that x3. But yeah, doesn't look like it. Plus the things that have been mentioned about his team and the FIA kind of enabling him by allowing him to get away with things they maybe should not have. In any event, I hope he and Lando can clear things up between each other and we don't see a repeat of this in the future. Dive-bombing though, hearing Max and Horner complain about that was just, c'mon.

He’s leading instead of chasing. Of course Max is going to sound like this. It’s what racing drivers in the front say.
It doesn’t make it right. But it is what is.

And this kind of attitude from Max? He’s been so far out in front for the better part of two years, he hasn’t had to consistently fight. He is now. And it has come right back. I’m not surprised at all he sounded like that on the radio and afterwards. It’s who he is. Leopard, spots, all that.

Toto sounded about as excited on his radio call as I’ve heard him in years.

Afterwards he said:
“I think I know the drivers pretty well and what they need at times to encourage or to re-focus, because I spend so much time with them,” said Wolff. “So I think I know their psychology. But this one is the single dumbest thing I've done in 12 years in Mercedes.

“I will be forever ashamed of this, because you look at where you message the driver. You don't do it on braking, or in high-speed corners. But I didn't look on the GPS [to see] where he was, I just saw these two taking each other out and we anticipated it, and then I just emotionally pushed the button and said 'we can win this'.

“I could have taken him out with that message – imagine,” added Wolff ruefully. “I'm emotional, I enjoy us doing well, and I enjoy seeing Lewis [Hamilton] and George doing well. I was just carried away with that situation, and I think that's what [George] said afterwards. But seriously… embarrassing.”

I think that George drove a good race. I think Oscar had a fantastic race. And the Haas guys were lined up still double points finish even without the clash. Very cool.

Fifth different winner this year. Fourth team. Circumstances and all, but still!

I can honestly see Oscar and Lewis joining the winners before the end of the year. It’s still Max’s to lose, but what a shocking difference to 4 months ago. To a year ago. To two years ago.
