Sargeant moving to IndyCar. Not confirmed yet, but I don't think anyone expects him to have an F1 seat, so he's taking what opportunities he's got. I expect to see something formal in the next couple weeks, probably around the F1 summer break.

EDIT:
Edit: and seeing them use the phrase “nine and 10” irks me. Either spell it out, or use digits. Don’t intertwine them like this!

Yep! Annoys me too. I was always taught consistency as well. Should either be "nine and ten" or "9 and 10".

Common style guides suggest spelling out single digits but switching to numerals for more. Typically, folks stick with words til twelve, but .. this isn’t necessarily inconsistent with traditional guidance.
I didn’t say it was wrong. I said it irks me.
These are different things.

Enquiring minds want to know - is the list of "irking" items longer than "THE LIST"?

Edited to add racing content:
1. Is he good enough for Indy?
2. Is he gone at the summer break at the same time any movement announcment?

To the first? Possibly. I’m in my 40’s now, so it only gets longer.

As to Sargeant and IndyCar?
A) It’s a very different discipline. It’s much more of a spec series, and driver skill really plays a roll. But the cars behave a LOT differently (according to articles I’ve read, anyway). So, I don’t know.
B) I think he sticks in the car. Two reasons: if it’s an established F1 driver that replaces him, they’re under contract through the end of the year, and it’s not worth bringing someone in for 6 months. If it’s a rookie? Sargeant sticks in the car through the rest of this season’s development cycle, but you give that new person as many FP1 sessions as you can.

1. Maybe? A lot of drivers that either left or were fired from F1 have moved to IndyCar and have mostly been successful. I say this only as someone reading IndyCar headlines I see and any clips/feedback here, but that's just what it seems.
2. I think they keep him in the car for the rest of the year, but the IndyCar and his replacement's announcement will be mid-season. EDIT: Although it would be funny if it was Sainz and he just broke his Ferrari contract and moved teams mid-2024. After all the crazy clauses I've heard built into contracts after some of the stuff this year, maybe Sainz has some "if I don't have a seat with the team next year..." lines? Silly season speculation for laughs.

Link to the times for F1 on circuit this weekend, should auto change to your respective timezone.

It’s a sprint weekend. So, prepare for busy watching! FP1 highlights for me, then full on for everything else. Sprint Quali, Sprint, Quali, Grand Prix. Oi. Lots-o-racing.

Looking at the weather, clear all weekend UNTIL Sunday. Looks like there is a really good chance that we may have a wet Grand Prix.

Oh. Goody. :devilish:

And, adding even more fun to the mix, Max's Montreal engine is unsalvageable, and he will almost certainly have to take an extra power unit component at least once before the end of the season, resulting in grid penalties. Seems like both championships are going to be runs all the way to the end of the season.

Link:
Didn't see it in this article, but apparently, they're also add a new blue line in a few of the corners and will use cameras and AI to help determine obvious track violation limits, and leave it up to the stewards to just review the close ones. Kinda sounds like the in/out cameras in tennis matches. Curious how that's going to impact the race as well and if they'll start adding that to more circuits.

EDIT: Also, Jolyon's analysis video for Spain is up on F1TV.

Or just put hard barriers up on the track limits (like some tracks already have) that will, shall we say, instantly identify and punish track limit violators.
But how will F1 get all that sweet, sweet AI investment money if they just buy some walls and posters? /s

For whom the {Marko} bell tolls…

Marko, who has previously either Ricciardo or Liam Lawson will drive the second RB next year, told Kleine Zeitung the team owners “have made it known that it is a junior team and we have to act accordingly.”
“The goal was that he would be considered for Red Bull Racing with exceptional performances,” said Marko. “That seat now belongs to Sergio Perez, so that plan is no longer valid.”

“We have to put a young driver in there shortly,” he added. “That would be Liam Lawson.”

Updated weather is now showing mostly NOT raining for Saturday and Sunday.
Pity.

The only thing we can hope for is that this is officially ‘Weird Weather‘ territory, being up in the hills of Austria. And it’s raining until Friday AM and starts up again Sunday PM. So… there is still a chance.

If they ever want to be a serious contender then yes, if Stroll Sr wants to guarantee his son an F1 seat...then its working as intended.

Remember, Lance is a future WDC according to Alonso ;)
Just be glad Lawrence's daughter wasn't interested, or maybe there is missed opportunity there.

I'm not a fan of Stroll, but I always feel the need to remind people that he beat George Russell two years in a row in F3. Yes, he was in the top team and may have had team orders to help, since his father owned part of that team. He won a lot of races, nonetheless.

I kind of wonder if he would have been better off doing some F2, but he did all right with Williams, really. Maybe being in F1 without any fear of getting fired is a good way to develop. Not many get that chance.

Most of last year he looked like he had given up. He's looking better this year, but maybe Alonso's just lost some motivation with the car not being capable of fighting for podiums anymore.

F1 is such a strange beast for dealing with talent. Compared to any other professional sport, the feeder pool is tiny. Very few people get to play at any level from F4 on up, and then the pool gets even smaller at every stop. Hell even Karting has only a tiny fraction of players that any other organized youth amateur sport has, including Hockey.

Just keeping the car on the track at pace without wrecking requires a fair amount of skill.

Could any of us do it after enough practice? Maybe

He's definitely not the worst driver in recent history

He's run really hot-and-cold throughout his F1 career, but at least in 2024 I don't think he's anywhere near the worst driver on the field. I'd take him over Sargeant or Zhou, and there's four or five other drivers I'd want to squint at and compare the strength of the vehicles they're in before I pick them over Stroll.

I will say that every time I do a really deep dive into Stroll’s numbers? He comes out better than I had assumed he was. I always assume the worst, and I end up well-actually-ing myself. Is he as good as Alonso*? Not really, no, that’s foolish. Is he out performing the people around him on the grid? Sometimes(##). Does he get into more accidents than other people? It’s certainly on telly more often, it feels like (@@).

*Except for when he IS.
## It’s more often than you’d think.
@@ It’s less than you’d think, and about in line with his cohort of mid-pack runners.

And on and on. Even looking at the lap deltas and stuff. It’s not as bad as you’d think****.

**** It’s still not good.

Now, I don’t think he’s the right choice if you are a serious WDC or constructors contender. But I would say THAT particular statement is true for at least half the drivers on the grid. But for where AM is at the moment? Sure. It’s fine.

But give Drugovich a shot, yeah?

A lot of drivers have done well in the lower divisions then floundered in F1. Obviousy the man has some skill, hell I probably couldnt even get an F1 car out of it's pit stall, there are just probably better options out there for that seat.
Now, I don’t think he’s the right choice if you are a serious WDC or constructors contender.
But how do you evaluate contenders? It's just an intractable problem, statistically. The F2 and F3 pools aren't much bigger than F1, and F4/NXT not much bigger than that. Karting has a few thousand playing in serious leagues, maybe?

For any other sport, selecting your $50MM athletes at the very professional peak comes after a massive winnowing of at least hundreds of thousands of players at the amateur level (millions of players for the Big Sports like hand egg, football, basketball, and baseball) from barely toddler ages up through university / semi-pro. Hundreds of millions of people drive cars every day, but have even 5 figures of people globally tried serious karting? How many ever get in an F4 car, a few hundred a year?

It's all a crap shoot when you have so few people in the game. And it's not like you can just hand them a ball and see how fast they can run, you have to give them serious time behind the wheel of a TWELVE MILLION dollar, very delicate car, then tell them to run it on the very ragged edge of turning it into a pile of parts. I'd be reluctant to just give up on Stroll as well.

I have determined that I’m going to be watching every session this weekend on demand while drinking tea and reporting on budget shenanigans.
I honestly can’t wait.
I've been so out of the loop. I didn't even know there was a race on this weekend! Winner!

Notes from today's F1 sessions, as I watch/listen while digging into why congressional appropriators aren't actually human beings - they are obviously lizards.

Watching the weekend warmup - Alex Jacques makes a REALLY good point. McLaren has to start really minimizing mistakes, even the small ones. He states:
They're still going to some places like Canada a couple of weeks ago; they hadn't scored points there in a decade! McLaren have waited a long time for this chance. But I think now operationally the team will now want to see those minor mistakes minimized, because you can't afford those minor mistakes when you're at the front of the field. This isn't the battle for third or fourth in the constructors anymore. This is a battle for the Formula One World Championship, and as a result mistakes have got to be minor. And even mistakes that we wouldn't normally call mistakes? Have got to go.

From the run up to FP1:
  • Victor Martins mentioned for the other seat at Alpine, behind Sainz and Doohan.
  • Drugovich mentioned as a possible at Audi.
  • Lawson rumored as a possible at Audi, but he may be racing sooner than that at VCARB due to the Marko/Ricciardo situation that is on about a medium simmer.
  • And as FP1 kicks off, moisture in the air.... but nothing on the track.
  • ♫♫ DUN DUN DUN (neeeeyoooooom) ♫♫
  • Aaaaand it's a Harry Benjamin in the booth instead of Crofty for Sky/International Feed. I'll stick with it for now because Bernie Collins is there too. I'll watch the not-related Sam Collins in Tech Talk instead of listening to his insights during practice. Think I might go with Alex Jacques and Jolyon Palmer on the F1TV feed for the rest of the weekend, though.
  • The gravel seems to be universally appreciated by the drivers on the commentary teams.
  • On the phone with the guy from Merc as George complains about going out at the same time as Lewis. Again..
  • Oh shit - Max on the side of the road?! Red flag - loss of power? And he's on his last NEW ICU... and he's back out on track!
  • I like the gravel at 9 & 10.
  • It looks VERY interesting all up and down the grid.

Sprint Quali
  • And I changed my mind. F1TV has David Coulthard in the booth. Lame. Back to the International feed.
  • I always forget how steep that hill up to turn 1 is.
  • Sargeant out qualifies Albon for a Sprint again. And out of SQ1. Huh. Look at that!
  • SQ3 - holy shit are they leaving it late!
  • LECLERC! 😖
  • Lando and Max are looking a step above the rest.

That was fun!

That was a fun first few laps. Oscar earned that place. Lando's gotta learn how to drive at the front, those little mistakes that didn't matter in the midfield are absolutely killing him now.
Man, the starts are starting to really bother me. Lando seems to be a bit slower off the line. Not the initial movement, but actual acceleration after the first jump.

That battle on lap 5 was excellent.

I really hope Yuki Tsunoda takes this to heart. You don’t say this shit.

Yeah, the first comment on that article just, ugh.

Anyway....unfortunate for Oscar, but honestly looking forward to see if he is able to work his way through to get a little closer to the front. Could be some really great battles considering the drivers ahead of him now. Fingers crossed Lando gets a good start and can reverse his fortunes from last week.
