Oh, Chloe Chambers in the first F1A race? Second podium! Way to go, Chambers!

She's from New York state. Was adopted as a toddler. Has a brother and a sister, also adopted. The other two also raced in karts. And I wish her all the best. So, I'd just like to point out that FINALLY, Haas F1 (via the Academy) have an American driver. And she's scoring big points and podium finishes. She's not going to catch Pulling, but still! Currently third in the championship. Lets go

On this side of the pond, Race 1 for NXT at Laguna Seca today? Chadwick started in 12th, finished 8th. She starts tomorrow's Race 2 in 14th. Here's to hoping she can carve her way up through the field a touch.

Merc have been showing signs of life over the last couple of weeks, wouldn't say they're "back", but they're not stuck in molasses anymore.

Go Lando. Not going to hope for a win, but another podium is definitely in the cards. Hopefully Oscar can get up there too. If they can both get on the podium ahead of Perez that tightens things up nicely.

The fact that we can realistically have conversations about who is going to be at the top or on the podium, and it's a split between four teams and seven to eight drivers on a given weekend right now?

This is AWESOME.
AWE.
SOME.

Max can still win it! And that's fine! The fact that there is actual competition at the pointy end of the field?! I am so freaking hyped for a race that I'm almost CERTAIN is going to mostly be a podcast/tire strategy race.

I'm not going to lie though. I'm rooting for Papaya, pretty sure that's obvious (I own some of their merch, ffs 😖).

BUT!

If Sir Lewis bucks the trend and manages to be the fourth person to ever win at Barcelona outside of the front row tomorrow? I'm going to lose my shit. Just absolutely lose it.

OH! and Max and Lando are going to be at a disadvantage because their teammates are so far behind them. Sergio qualified 8th but has that three place grid drop for dragging the ass end of the RBR around Montreal and littering carbon everywhere. And Oscar didn't set a competitive lap due to understeer and track limits. So they are WAY back there.

The Mercs and the Scuderia are two-by-two just behind Max and Lando, however...

It could be good! It could be exciting!

I watched a bit of that race and Chadwick seemed to be stuck behind what looked to be a slower car in front, and maybe didn't seem to be confident enough to send it. Most of her gains also seemed to have come from other cars misfortunes (running off track). Looked like Sundaramoorthy blew his first podium by careening into a backmarker on the last corner broke his suspension and limped home in 4th.

Other things: The Race kinda had a breakdown of how lando and Max were up 3 tenths over the others. Love how Lando is learning to trust the car more. I think that Max already has that trust, he also has the ability to reign the car back when he overdrives and keeps it off the wall.

As much as I love articles like that, part of me wants it to be man tames beast..almost like it takes too much mystery out of things.

Lastly....I can't remember the last thing :)

F1 Academy spoilers..

Pulling had a poor start. Combine that with the much cooler track and her going off and riding the kerb hard at turn 9? Meant that she lost P1 at turn 1 and was never in position to get it back.

So. Chloe Chambers is a race winner! For Haas! Great start, got in clean air and just pulled away.

I hope they put a big picture of her up in the corporate headquarters / factory across town from me.

Oh and by back for Merc I mean back challenging for race wins. Remains to be seen but as a Merc fan, I'll take what I can get after that last couple of years. Max is still going to win another WDC this year, but the CC....if Checo can't fix himself it's going to be a different team at the top of the podium at the end of the season. In any event, this is really turning in to a fun season.

Okay, the writers are drunk and out of ideas…

Groan, having to watch the "lifetime" banned cheater on the grid celebrating as Alpine drivers have a good weekend is galling. "Sprinkling the magic dust" indeed. Speculation that he's in to assist in the sale of the team. We will know the world has been rebooted with the writers on harder stuff should we get the headline:

"Briatore benefits Bernie ; Brabham is back baby!!!"

There was some overtake drama throughout the F1 race that was fun to watch, as well as some good drama between Hamilton and Sainz. The latter sure was bitching up a storm on the radio, but as the announcers were quick to point out if you leave the door open Hamilton will knock on it. Verstappen once again stone cold. One tiny bobble, but otherwise just no mistakes and perfect team, pit, and strategy execution.

The better races were the lower power cars. TWO American Anthems played today out of 4 feature races (F2 & F1A). Astounding. Chambers took the win with a zero mistake race and Pulling second with a 1 mistake race. Still have to hand it to Pulling - she had the discipline to not push like crazy and lose it while defending 2nd. Chambers is definitely a viable F3 or F2 candidate though. Can't tell till you put them in the seats. Floersch did OK, but she's not going to carry women's racing past F3.

F3 was won by a 16 year old.

Not really sure to say about the race. It was exciting, but kinda boring....mainly because the excitement was due to what may happen at the end of the race. Russell spoiled things at the beginning by getting a wide tow and got to the outside of Norris. If George isn't there on the outside, I think that Norris doesn't have to back out and holds on to first. Maybe Max stays in DRS range and takes the lead, but I think that the Mclaren being better on tires would have lead to a Norris win....but George messed that up by holding up Norris for a few laps.

I kinda feel that Russell got hosed strategy-wise. He was ahead of Hamilton and they put him on hards that they hadn't really tested and it worked out bad for him. Just got a feeling when they were talking to Hamilton that before the race Lewis would have been on the preferred strategy and they never adjusted for it even though Russell was ahead of him in the race.

Lando biffed his start -- he was too focused on squeezing Max rather than getting the cleanest start possible. George didn't spoil anything, Lando left the door wide open and George took advantage. Yes, Lando would have lost the place to Max because it's fucking Max, but he would have been in a better position to retake the lead later.

Small mistakes, but they add up. Throw in a slow pit stop (and staying out one lap too many IMO) and that was just too much of a gap to overcome.

And yeah George got fucked over by the team. By rights he should have been on the podium, not Lewis, but "hey, let's try hards and see what happens" was just gobsmacking. But hey, Merc's showing real signs of life at last. Now that AM has fallen off it's good to have a third team in the mix behind RB.

I had the ending spoiled, so I’ll be catching the race at my convenience a bit later. :\
I'm sorry. I hate when that happens.

On the subject, could we agree to spoiler non-F1 results in this thread? At least for a day or so? I'll often pop in here after watching F1 and see something about an Indy/MotoGP/F1A race that I was planning on catching later. It's fine if people don't want to, but I appreciated Diabolical spoilering his F1A comments up the page and thought I'd propose it.

There's a red team around somewhere as well, they're second in the WCC standings :p

We'll just have to wait for them to wake up again :biggreen:

He had nearly 30 laps to go when he pitted, so I'm not sure the softs would have made it. He didn't have a set of mediums left (according to Ruth), so I don't think they had a choice.

Nah. I just stay away from the thread on main F1 day until I'm a) watching it live or b) know the results.

F1A was watched live by me, and I know it's a race that others will watch LATER. As it's ancillary to F1, I figure it doesn't hurt to spoil it.

Commentary on the main event? You should know better than to come in here until you are done with the race (or are watching it live). Otherwise, when is the cutoff for spoilering a race? What about the people who will inevitably not spoiler tag ANYTHING?

No. For other series? Sure. For the main F1 stuff? Stay out of the thread until you are ready to be exposed to spoilers.

I commented on the thread because I got spoilered about the end because of a text from a friend. At that point? Eh. I'll comment along. It's not a big deal.

Running thoughts as I watch it:

1) Is the gravel much closer to the track at turn 9? I seem to remember there being a lot of tarmac on the other side of the kerb - regardless, I like how going wide over turn 9 now gets you a rough grind on the kerb AND a tire or two dipped into the gravel.

2) The middle part of the first stint is VERY much a tire strategy race - as I'm typing this, Checo just put on used softs. And I'm seeing several slow and messed up pit stops.

3) F1TV on in the 'international (aka SkyF1)' setting? You can change the audio track from English (in the 'gear' settings in the bottom right) to FX. You get track noise and the team radio messages, and THAT'S IT. No commentary! It's actually pretty freaking cool! MLB and the NHL used to have this option for their online broadcast packages, but I think they went away entirely.

4) Norris muffing the start hurt him. I think if he'd been able to run in clear air? He'd have been able to win this thing.

5) That Papaya car is damn quick. That fight through turns 2-3-4-5-6-7 between Lando and George was fabulous.

Aaaand pausing at 34 for lunch and other stuff.

I think one thing that might have factored into the hards not working out was the weather change in the latter part of the race, with cloud cover moving in and cooling the track surface. Russell did put in a fastest lap when he first put on the hards but then the clouds showed up shortly after. I don't know what the conditions were like when they ran hards during free practice but it might not have been a bad decision if the track had stayed hotter to the end of the race. Obviously the Sainz crew thought hards were the better choice as well (not that Ferrari is known for making the best strategy calls).

Enjoyable race for me. Some good battles here and there. Sucks for Lando, I hope that's something he can clean up a bit, but he's going to win more races with that car. Really great to see Lewis on the podium again. Not fast enough to hang with Max and the McLaren's yet, but nice to see the Mercs are mxing it up right there at the front again. Ferrari, oh man, and now the boys are fighting about something I guess. At least it wasn't a huge step back and might just be the track in their case. Excited for two more in the next two weeks!

Yes, the man who complains after almost every race, Sainz, is complaining that his teammate complains too much after complaining about his contact with Hamilton :biggreen:

Yea, I kinda hate it when watching that I cant remember what tires someone is on and have no clue on what tires they have left in the inventory. I forgot that he pitted kinda early, and probably chewed up his softs trying to stay ahead of Norris. I would be a horrible strategist seeing I have this tendency to let others make the first move. "If you want to try and undercut go ahead, make my day!" Its kinda like it is showing weakness to pit first or something. Guess that doomed him to the strategy they ended up with.

In Indy NXT news: Chadwick ended up 6th. Because it was the last race there it seems like the drivers were a bit more ballsy with trying to overtake. Chadwich was already up a couple of places when I tuned in, but again she seemed to be stuck behind a slower car, but finally got by and then moved up on the next one in front...so her rise was as bit of both actual on track passing and misfortunes of others. One dude got hipchecked at the corkscrew and did a rally jump off the top and broke his rear suspension.

Finally: I remember what I was going to write last night.
This week I learned that a co-worker's family had a mom & pop hardware store in PHX for a couple of generations. Her dad was also a middle of the pack funny car driver. Apparently they also ended up doing repairs and working on the Andretti Indycars whenever the races hit the PHX area.

I know but I'm just wondering what the hell they're up to at Ferrari :D
Haven't we been asking that for years in various contexts?

Overall, this was a very good podcast race (mostly audio), as the strategy and drama with pit stops made for interesting listening. Combined with at least a little on track action from time to time? This was alright.

I was watching the International/Sky feed - mostly because I don't really like David Coulthard as the color commentary guy on the F1TV stream. Crofty/Karun/Bernie Collins was a pleasant way to spend some time while I worked on other things.

The fact that Lando was again chasing down the Red Bull and taking time out of the laps that Verstappen was pulling in almost every stint? Oh boy. The overall compression of performance towards the pointy end of the field makes me very happy that the season is very different right now (vibe wise) than it was after Jeddah.

The back & forth Norris/Russell that lasted for half a lap around the race midpoint was perhaps the battle of the season so far. Biggest competition that I can think of was probably Ocon/Gasly in Miami lap 1.

Okay then! Honestly didn’t see that coming as an option. I expected the Doohan news, that he’d be testing more as a contender for Ocon’s seat. But Alpine appears to also be considering Schumacher enough that they’re having him drive a 2022 car as a test run…

I was in NYC for the weekend, so missed Quali and the Race. I saw that Lando had gotten pole, so studiously avoided any news whilst waiting for my flight home on Sunday. Then whilst going through my emails I found an email from McLaren saying "Celebrate Lando's podium ..." and knew he hadn't won, and Max likely had >.<

I watched the first lap of the full replay then decided to jump straight to the 30 minute replay instead, and I'm glad I did. I have to say though, as someone who always listens to the International Feed, what is up with the F1-branded commentators?
Maybe it was just the way they edited it for the 30-minute recap, but it seemed like they were missing talking about action until it had just happened, and it sounded like they were being caught out by events. DC seemed uninterested on the few occasions that Alex queued him up.

I can't quite get on with Alex Jacques' style, so perhaps I'm already biased against them, but I was not impressed from what I heard on the recap.

Either way, decent race, and Lando P2 in the WDC! I loved his attitude over the radio during the race when being asked if they wanted to play safe and cover from George and he said "Nah, let's focus and go get Max". That's the kind of bullishness I want to see from the team now ... we need to tighten up some operational stuff, but I feel like there are going to be more good times in 2024 for McLaren ^_^

When it’s Jolyon Palmer in the commentary box with them, they are MUCH better. And the practice sessions where it was Alex Jacques, Alex Brundle, and Ruth Buscombe? Very good. It’s like if you pull David Coulthard out of the equation they get much better.

Not as good as the combo of Crofty/Karun/Bernie on the international feed this week, though. That was stellar. Even for a mostly audio-enjoyment race.

It is being reported that Haas will formally announce that Oliver Bearman is in for a 2025 seat at the British GP in a couple weeks.

Sounds like there's the potential for a few F2 drivers to move up.

Austria is putting in some gravel.

Per Racefans, with emphasis by me:
A spokesperson for the FIA, who said they had previously urged the circuit operators to install gravel traps to discourage drivers from running wide, said at the time they “renew our recommendation to the circuit to add a gravel trap at the exit of turns nine and 10.”

The operators of the Red Bull Ring have complied with the request by adding a 2.5-metre-wide gravel traps to the edges of the two corners within the last two weeks. A similar gravel trap was added to the final corner at the Shanghai International Circuit for this year’s Chinese Grand Prix.

And emphasis is mine here:
The FIA investigated over 1,200 potential track limits infringements during last year’s race. A total of 83 infringements were identified, all of which occured at turns nine and 10. Eight drivers were penalised, including Esteban Ocon who was given a total of four separate sanctions adding up to 30 seconds.

Unknown what the Red Bull Ring folks are going to do when MotoGP swings through in August - those guys don’t want the gravel there. I guess it’s conceivable they pull it all back out, but… yeah, we’ll see.

Common style guides suggest spelling out single digits but switching to numerals for more. Typically, folks stick with words til twelve, but .. this isn’t necessarily inconsistent with traditional guidance.
