Ghost of Tsushima - The Kurosawa game we always wanted

Finished. I played the Director's Cut. I don't have the Iki Island expansion and do not intend to play it. I feel like Jin's story is done. I don't need anything more.

That was draining. Trying to think of games I played that were that continually depressing throughout. I guess there's Fran Bow. While often cute when you're not in nightmare mode, it is always creepy and with a strong feeling of "this is not going to end well". And The Last of Us I and II, but even those have bright moments. I'm intentionally leaving out Resident Evil. I have not played many horror games.

But I'm hard pressed to think of any of the Tales that had a simple happy ending. The people you try to help all have grim outcomes. There is the village with the women you rescue but then

you execute the guy that sold them out. Even though the women are rescued, pretty much everyone loses in that one.

The Jin/Shimura relationship is pretty sad. I had Jin walk away. Shimura's idea of honor is pretty messed up. He keeps telling Jin he has no honor, but Shimura was going to purposely throw away the lives of his soldiers on a fruitless attack. Where is the honor in that? It doesn't matter Jin's plan eventually backfired, Shimura's plan ws bs. I'm more angry at him than heartbroken.

If it sounds like I'm complaining about Ghost, I'm not. I'm just unloading a few of my thoughts in the immediate aftermath. It's a good story when you can get emotionally invested.

Visually the game is stunning. Not just in landscapes, but the costumes are often beautiful. Accessories are detailed. But even the environment, the way the pampas grass moves, or when you're walking over leaves, like the red leaves around Omi lake. they fly up around your feet. Great detail and beautiful to see.

This game is well crafted.

I don't think this has any replay value for me. But it's a game I finished, even if it took two years. And that is an accomplishment.

I picked this game up from the PS Store Black Friday sale after having spent months longingly gazing at the visuals I'd seen out and about on the Internet.

It does not disappoint. I'll post in the future with more in-game observations, but the atmosphere, art direction, story, combat mechanics, and just .. mood .. are absolutely what I was hoping for. Been a while since a game kept me up long past my bedtime walking (not fast traveling or even riding!) to just one more "?" :D

There aren't many games left that don't have RPG mechanics. This has a story about the protagonist, and you acquire more skills as the game goes on. In the most basic description it's like an Assassin's Creed game, but it benefits from more focus, a more interesting environment, and better writing. I've largely grown to hate pretty much every Assassin's Creed game since ACII (and that includes over 80 hours each of the last three), and I absolutely loved Ghost Of Tsushima. YMMV, of course.

Oh hell... I didn't realize the port was imminent. Game looks stellar but I still haven't bothered to pick up a PS5. Quick reminder question since I can't look it up at work - what is the difficulty level here? Is it Souls-like or more action-adventure? I despise the extremes of Souls gameplay. I understand the draw of unwrapping each boss like a puzzle that requires repeated attempts and polishing to get past - it's just not at all for me.

Its action-adventure ish. Some of the optional bosses pack a punch and might require a few replays, but they are vulnerable to all your special stuff, so you don't necessarily have to git gud, just try a different approach. Also, I'm pretty sure the difficulty slider can be changed at any time and doesn't even break achievements?

Much more modern Assassin's Creed than Souls. I've never made it past the first boss of any Souls game I've tried, but I happily played Ghost of Tsushima all the way through.

I'd play some Souls games if they had a difficulty slider. The 'git gud' gameplay mechanism is understandable but not for me - I just get annoyed having to re-play the same thing just to polish it up to perfection to get past it.

Modern AC games are OK, but I miss the earlier style that didn't use levels. Yeah that's a bit schizophrenic from me - I'll spend time casing a location looking for that perfect movement and escape sequence to assassinate a well protected target, but I don't want to do something similar to take down a Souls boss.

It's challenging, but not TOO challenging.. And difficulty options can be changed at any time. I frequently turned duels down to Easy early on just because my dexterity isn't what it used to be.

If you crank the difficulty up, then yeah, you're looking at Souls-like challenge.. And in NG+ you can even get some charms that'll make it even harder if that's your jam.

IMO, the perfect melee gameplay was pretty much achieved (for me) with JK:Survivor. I played JK the first half, then switched to JM. A few fights I had to re-do once or twice but not any more than that, and the game usually had me sweating the big fights even if I got them in one go. That's perfect design for me. JK:FO I finished as well but didn't enjoy nearly as much - it felt like I was always fighting the input scheme rather than the enemies.

If has an attack cancel mechanism then I can tackle higher difficulties. I grew up on fighting game that encouraged or outright rewarded button-mashing / dial-a-combo play for offense, and attack cancel for rapid defense. JK:S had an attack cancel with the dual stance so I could handle virtually anything.

Installed, and played through the first part. Haven't really figured out the 'lock on' gameplay, but on normal mode it's quite forgiving, to the point I may move it up to hard.

Performance is outstanding. Everything maxed, and it's perfectly fluid and stunningly beautiful. So responsive I had to turn the mouse sensitivity way down. The default key mapping is a total disaster, but since you can remap every key (both primary and backup) that's irrelevant. And it doesn't suffer from the 'you have gaming peripherals plugged in so we're going to default to controller' problem so many recent titles have had (I have a bunch of driving/flight controllers plugged in, and it's a refund if they interfere with the game.)

One thing I'm going to have to get used to after most recent games: "Hey lets sneak up on them and kill them quietly!" (I'm thinking YEAH, that's the ticket!... but no) "My code doesn't allow that" - walks right up without thinning them or prep. Dude. WTF. Honor is for the honorable.

I'm guessing this is an alternate history Japan where the Mongol invasion wasn't wiped out by the Divine Winds? - Edit: after some research I didn't realize the first invasion fleet actually managed to invest Tsushima before the storm destroyed the beachhead at Hakata. So actually based on real events.

Welp, had some time to play through the prologue, and it's amazing how much easier it is to do things like perfect parry when you're getting 60+FPS :p On the PS4 (original model) the performance wasn't quite good enough for me to be able to, so I almost exclusively dodged or just held block.

Game looks and plays fantastic on my rig (10th-gen i7 with a GeForce RTX3070). Can run it on Very High at 1440p, but opting to go with High just for the extra FPS (quality difference is fairly minimal anyway).

I got a little upset for a moment at one point in the prologue when I picked my horse..
..Because I remembered that towards the end the horse you "will have with you throughout the entire game" FUCKING DIES IN A HORRIBLE GUT-WRENCHING WAY.

Does kinda suck to not have all my charms and unlocks carry over from my PS4 save, but oh well; Will be fun to experience the game fresh all over again, especially with the better graphics and performance.

there is a reason why this game is called GHOST of Tsushima.

this thread reminds me - I never finished the DLC - I started a whole new game to enjoy on the then brand new PS5 after finishing the play through on the PS4 but never got far. May start over on the PS5 on easy and plow through for the DLC.

such a pretty game, even today

Struggling a bit to come up with the perfect KB/M layout. What are y'all using? I have left mouse to quick attack, center wheel click to heavy strike, right click to block/parry, and back left-side button to dodge (in conjunction with WASD for direction, of course.) Just unlocked dodge-roll and I'm not sure where I'll put that... the forward left-side mouse button is a bit awkward to use as I have to shift my entire hand forward on the mouse. I usually never map it.

Want to avoid alt+ anything as that's a finger killer for me. Q is currently set for healing.

Playing between normal and hard, seeing where the max enjoyability is. Lethal gets a lot of boosts on the discussion forum since it also makes your strikes more deadly, so I may give that a try, though that would make bosses much more souls-like. Not sure I'm up for that level of boss frustration.

With GoT I suggest sticking with a controller, just for the analog movement aspect.

One thing I'm missing from the PS4 version is the touchpad; I'm using my 8bitdo controller, which is well mapped by default, but a few of the interactions (like the guiding wind) take extra effort without the touchpad (haven't tried the flute stuff yet).

I just love that there is a game with such GOOD combat that also provides difficulty options.

Having a bad pain day and am totally exhausted, so this evening I dropped it down to easy and had some fun without worrying about my reaction times. I may just leave it there so I can grind through the game a little faster to get to NG+ where I left off on the PS4. I loved playing my Terror Stealth build.

I usually use a trackball and Logitech G13 keypad of all of my gaming due to the sheer number of keys available (and I like the speed and precision of my trackball), but these game elements you mention intrigue me. =)

I happen to have a Steam controller I bought before they got discontinued (I also have a current Xbox controller). Would the touch pad on the Steam controller be better to use, or is it different than the PS touch pad (I don't own one, so have no clue).

I don't do controllers, other than pure fighting games (DoA, Tekken, etc). I don't how good controller aim assist is, but it seems almost like KB/M breaks bow combat, as I can wipe out an entire camp with headshots using the starter, partially upgraded bow. I'm guessing they're going to all start wearing armor in later stages like HZD/HFW mobs do.

Artistically, this may be the best executed game I've ever seen.

For bow combat: absolutely, especially with late game builds for archery can you stomp them.. And M+KB makes it even easier, for sure.

However, one important aspect of the game is that you absolutely cannot rely on any single play-style to run the tables, so to speak. Different quests require different approaches, and then you've also got the duels (which are spectacular) and close-combat engagements.

The game is a delight. Beautiful, fun to play, and the world is easy to get immersed in.

HOWEVER

There was a single part of a mission that happened that I hope isn't a recurring theme.

An Assassin's Creed-style tail mission where you follow the monk back to the hideout. Nothing is more exciting than "follow this guy until he stops to look around, hide, then repeat.

It only happens a couple other times IIRC. I know of at least one side mission that has it, and at least one main story mission (that's pretty early on).

Made it to Act 3; joys of being sick (new meds make me basically feel hungover for 24 hours after taking them; thankfully it's just once a week dose) is I could basically nap, eat, and play all day without feeling guilty.

I had almost forgotten just how GOOD the story is here. Such an amazing game that blows away most AAA studio titles.

Not without it's quirks, but I'm actually impressed; I've encountered very few bugs, and these are all new to me (I never encountered these specifically in the PS4 version): One time when I was doing the standoff it wasn't registering that I was holding Y until it was too late, and occasionally I'll have problems switching stances where I can't get the stance switcher to come up for a second or two.

Played on PS4 (30fps), then on PS5 (60fps), and now on PC (120+ fps). Sticking with the Dualsense.

God I love how good the art design is... for a game built in the PS4 days: sure the geometric complexity is a step down from Horizon Forbidden West, but who the [expletive] cares when the moment to moment combat is so tight, the writing and performances so sincerely delivered.

What a great experience.

Just FYI, if you encounter the same bug I had with the faceoff not registering the button press, just go to the menu and back out again; That fixes it.
You rule. I stopped doing them when that bug started up, as every third one the button wouldn't work. Plus I preferred the Ninja approach vs Samurai. The best encounter is the one where they all die before seeing me.

Decided to try out a Kensei infinite resolve build, and.. Wow, that is very, very broken.

Basically can just spam Heavenly Strike and never have to worry about resolve.

Not something I'd recommend actually using unless you just hate the larger scale combat encounters, but it can be fun if you're stuck and don't want to just turn down the difficulty.

Hmm... it fixed it once, and hasn't fixed it since. There are many fixed proposed in the GoT Reddit group, with varying degrees of success. Looks like an old bug that high PC framerates have made much worse.

Main quest & Iki island story finished. Just doing some of the misc side stuff (banners/charms/etc plus a handful of side quests) and then I'll start NG+. Already grabbed all the armors, at least, aside from one.

Iki Island was shorter than I remember. Still good, though.

Did encounter one new bug: Sound occasionally gitched out on Iki Island on the big fight quests in the fort.. I'd lose most sound except for ambient rain and whatnot, which sucked because I also couldn't hear the archers shouting, either.

Seemed to JUST impact the Fort, however.

Once you upgrade to getting five or six kills in a face-off, you can wipe pretty much any random encounter out in seconds. The remaining dudes get a headshot and it's all over.
