So, I had bought this game about 2 months ago now, but on console... and have gotten to play it for about 2 hours in the 2 months I've had it.

Because our girls aren't in school with the pandemic and thus stay up until 10 PM and I can't cut people up with them up and around :(

What I have played is gorgeous, and I suck at it. I'm not a samurai. I'm a god damned practice dummy for the mongolians ;)

Finally finished the game. Second act was kind of slow, so half way through it, I just hit the main quest for the rest of the game. As much as I enjoyed it, I was ready for it to be over. Casually working through some of the character tales now.

I played the most of the game on medium, but did the duels on easy, because there was something about the combat that I didn't get or it didn't click it me.

I mostly got the combat system but it still feels weird. To me, I think it's because it's a two-stage/two-speed combat system and it goes against years of video game combat systems.

Essentially every single combat situation is a duel (when not using ghost techniques). The first stage is patience and waiting for the cue of their attack, the second stage is once you counter/parry it you move into a fast past hammer attack to stagger and get the upper hand. I did both Kendo/Iaido for a few years, and the combat feels much like that, but I don't feel it quite translated into video game form. Then you toss in extra combatants and it's tricky and almost sloppy at times. It's hard to puppet the group into what you need to win. While this is true in life, a many-vs-one melee is difficult, it's generally not fun.

I've already made my opinions known on the SP campaign (it's essentially whatever to recap) I really like the co-op. It's a lot more fun and the raid looks like it's going to be interesting. Survival is okay.

I'm what seems to be halfway through Act 3. I've been spending so much time doing the side missions in the other areas before progressing the story that it's taken me over 3 months to beat this game! (Not to mention all the other games I've been playing).

The co-op mode is absolutely amazing. I'm not very far into it but what I have done is masterfully done.

Anyone playing Legends mode?

Never thought I would like playing a "looter shooter(melee-er?)" but I do. Except for the Bronze level story missions, I've been playing with randoms via matchmaking - the majority of the time, it's been a good experience.

Reached Gold level on Story and Survival (horde mode), and thinking of taking on Nightmare. The 3 chapter raids seem to be the conclusion of the Story missions but you can't do them with matchmaking. I'm hoping there are Ars players who might be interested in making a group for Nightmare and/or Raid.

My main is ronin and most of my gear are level 105.

My PSN id is NamelessMonster. Hope to hear for some of you all.
I'm in BC, Canada btw.

In my quest to play all the AAA games a year after everyone else (I'm not sure how this happened, I used to play this stuff at release, but life eh?), I started this yesterday.

Having a lot of fun with it so far. I like the ordered, non-button bashy combat. My only slight complaint would be a lack of ability to focus/lock onto a specific enemy, which can make the crowd combat rather awkward, but I'm getting through it with lots of blocking and dodging. At least there's no Soulslike stamina bar.

I spent a lot of time wandering the island exploring so far and there's something very entertaining and relaxing about the slow pace, coupled with moments of brutality.

It definitely is getting better. I had some time last night and did a few missions. I was trying to get to the end of one of the legendary quests and I got distracted about 300 times on the way there. Logging camps, patrols, hostages in need of rescuing... Somewhere in between the zen moments of wandering and collecting flowers, iron, supplies and wood and the flashes of short but deeply brutal combat, the evening had passed. I looked up and it was 2330. :D

I think, more than any other aspect, that's the sign of a great game world for me. I realize it's not what everyone wants in a game, but I find getting completely swept up in a place is the best kind of engagement. There's certainly valid criticisms of a lot of the open-world gameplay elements in Ghost of Tsushima being kind of antiquated, but personally that's all kind of beside the point when I can happily spend hours just wandering around the island without ever getting to the Point B I'd set out for.

C'mooooonn PC release....

Not going to be any time soon would be my guess. I would love it (especially if I could somehow copy my progress over to PC), but note how long it took for Days Gone and HZD to migrate..
I mean, the purchase of Nixxes is a very suspect purchase if it's not to port more of their games to PC. Cross platform support is literally the only thing that Nixxes has ever done and I don't think they'd have bought them for just MLB on the Xbox nor do I think anything of theirs is coming to Xbox or Switch.

Oh, no doubt, but even if they DO port it, it's not going to be a fast port.. And if it is, it's going to be buggy as hell (see HZD port). :)

Man, why you wanna pee in my corn flakes???

;)

I know it's going to be a while. I've seen speculation that they're working on it and it'll be released sometime next year.

This game, Spider-Man and Horizon ZD were among the reasons I opted to buy a PS 4 Pro in Fall 2018 (another was that I really really wanted to play RDR II right away). :D

I really wish the camera weren't so awful sometimes, though. Why can't all games do what Bungie's Oni did 21 years ago, namely make whatever's blocking the view transparent so you could see the action?

Also some of the missions are killing me. This one from a side questline where you have to save a dude (brother to another dude) held hostage and then like a dozen enemies show up, including at least one brute and a bunch of spearmen, is making me tear my hair out. I think I need to use some kunai + slashes to thin the herd, then smoke + stabby stabby, then maybe sticky bomb or two.

It's the only game on PS4 I've actually beaten. Now I just hop into NG+ occasionally when I need a fix :)

It's popularity is obvious based on my GGN analytics.. My GoT content is typically the highest performing every day, especially after the Director's Cut.

Speaking of that, I still just have the base game and I'm just playing single player stuff, so I really wish they'd finally patch it definitively and leave it alone for a while. Even if you tell it you're only playing SP stuff, it keeps bugging you periodically (often at inopportune moments) about patching it. Then when you go looking to see whether the patch has downloaded, it still hasn't, because it's slow as molasses.

In those cases should I just exit the game entirely, go off and make a sandwich and come back? Would the patch d/l more quickly that way? I have a decently fast connection.

I update most games when I go to bed, or kick it off right when I get home if I think it will complete at all quickly.

Your connection speed is only half of the equation; patching day-of-patch is going to be slower than if you wait, due to everyone else downloading ASAP.

The patches since the PS5 version came out have been relatively small in size after the initial big patch. They have added lots of quality of life features to the PS4 version since the Directors cut came out.

Thanks for the replies to you and Puke... Is there a list of those QoL features somewhere?

Scroll down here

https://blog.playstation.com/2021/07/01 ... august-20/

Big ones are target lock on, reconfigurable control layouts, and previously (depending on what patch you have) charms load outs for your various armors.

Target lock-on? OK, guess I haven't found that one yet. I do appreciate all those you've named. Presumably all those features came with the main Director's Cut (and required patch for the base game), though. These 2.0.8, 2.0.9 and such must be bug-fixes.

so I kinda petered out on this game in 2020... I was in the middle of Act II. But I did something I never do... I watched a let's play series on Mass Effect. It was actually interesting. So they also played Ghost and I decided to check it out. This reignited my interest in the game and because I was watching the videos I did not have to start over to figure out where I was in the story or the characters. I was able to pick up where I left off. I just had to remember how to play it.

Anyway I am in the middle of Act III now.

One thing I realized, or maybe had forgotten, was just how depressing this game can be. I mean, I did like two or three side missions in a row in which I was supposed to rescue or find someone and in each one they were already dead or the person who gave me the mission died instead.

Just recently I went to find food and medicine for a family who locked themselves in a building and did not trust Jin. I was gone two minutes and when I came back they were dead or dying.

Don't play this game if you are in a partying mood.
