Put me down on the list of people hoping for an out-of-nowhere announcement of a 2D Zelda game. They could just do a new one (which would be amazing), or I'd be cool with another remake similar to Link's Awakening (2019). Just sayin', I'd absolutely love a remake of A Link Between Worlds....
Link Between Worlds was amazing. So good that playing it before Skyward Sword really hurt the latter for me when I got around to it. You can also draw a direct line from its willingness to shake up classic Zelda conventions straight to Breath of the Wild rethinking the whole endeavor. That it seems to have been forgotten is a real shame.

Oh, and Ravio is one of my favorite characters in the entire series.

I’d like a Star Fox 64 and F-Zero remake as well… Don’t think either of those are happening though.

IMO Star Fox 64 does not hold up at all. I tried to play it on Wii VC and didn't get very far, because it's just not fun. It would be even worse now. They could do so much better for that IP than remaking the old games.

Eh, I still have it in my N64 and enjoy it. There have been other rail shooters that came out and refined what it did, and did it better, but I still like it. Also, besides Star Fox Command, every game that came out post N64 was not very good to bad. Adventures was a mistake, Assault was almost good but they messed up the on-foot controls, and Zero just controlled terribly and was simply no fun.

I was hoping for something interesting from that new Zelda but looks like I'll nope out of that one (not to mention it ran poorly like Link's Awakening). I wish we could just memory hole BOTW and TOTK. I guess that crap is going to infest all Zelda now. Where's my Wind Waker remake?

FIST TO THE CLOUDS!

Nothing much interesting to me until I hear about Switch2 and how they deal with the BC/gfx upgrades on older games. I do still want to pick up Luigi's Mansion 2/3 but probably a skippin'.

Emphasis mine. Because Wind Waker got a remaster, if not a remake, which added a magic sail to make the sailing faster.

Wind Waker is interesting because it was the game that almost killed the franchise by not selling very well. I agree that it's a great game, often underrated, but I'm not sure you'll ever get a return to that particular form. It sucks when things you love evolve away from your tastes.

In my view, open world is the way to go for Zelda games. It just feels so right. I want them to bring back the crazy big dungeons that they had in Twilight Princess, but I hope that the open world is here to stay.

It's patently absurd to complain that all Zeldas are going to be like BOTW/TOTK because you don't like the look and feel of a new Zelda that is nothing at all like BOTW or TOTK.
I disagree, I can see a clear influence from those games in this one. The new echo power looks to be used not just for combat but puzzle solving also. The intent is clearly moving away from the classic puzzles with a single solution you’re intended to figure out and towards “here’s an obstacle, here’s a toolbox, get across however you want.” Even if you love it (and I do), it’s unquestionably different.

FWIW I think this game looks wonderful. My first thought was how perfectly suited the mechanics were for Zelda, rather than just reskinning Link and making it play the exact same way they came up with a new idea that fits Zelda’s character wonderfully. My second thought was “wow she looks seriously OP.” Thinking back to classic puzzles the new echo tool has the potential to be absolutely game breaking.

Talk about going out with a bang. "The Switch has less than a year left. So here is a new playable Zelda game, Super Mario Party, new Mario & Luigi game, Dragon Quest III HD-2D release date and announcing I and II also, Ace Attorney Investigations 1 and 2, and Metroid Prime 4 exists."

Fantasian and Mio look interesting also.

Talk about end-of-lifing a console on a high note. A whole bunch of these games look captivating. Particularly the new DKC, Mario Brothership, Super Mario Party, and Zelda 2D.

Which is funny because for the 7 years of the Switch life cycle, only a handful of Nintendo titles got my buy in (MK8, SSBU, SMB Wonder and Zelda TOTK). Outside of that Nintendo's stuff just hasn't generated a lot of enthusiasm from me, and I straight up regret some of the other Switch titles I bought (in poarticular Mario Strikers is meh, and Mario Golf is pretty close to garbage and definitely joyless).

All of these though look pretty excellent in some way and I'm looking forward to getting hands on.

You didn't watch the video did you?

The whole thing was a basic version of TOTK on an isometric map. I don't want to 'clone' a bunch of junk. I was hoping that staff was maybe them going to a ranged attack but no; just a dumb clone thing.

Doesn't look bad as I also enjoyed the look of Link's Awakening but the engine runs like a dog on ol' girl.

Oh I guess someone will build a house in the sky with all those beds, boxes and tables. Oh boy. Or maybe we'll get cloned enemies playing volleyball over some rocks or something.

I wouldn't hesitate to tell people my disappointment with BOTW/TOTK; the worlds lack the charm of the older games to me, and the dungeons are pretty bad.

But, while there's definitely some influence from them in the new trailer, the world looks to be the same smaller and more deliberate design of the top down games. Really depends on how well the echoes are done.

Besides, it'd be silly for them to go "hey, play Zelda!" and just model swap Link with her.

MIO really got my attention. That was what excited me most out of the Direct.

I’m intrigued by new Zelda, but I’m nit the biggest fan of the new Link’s Awakening engine it’s built on.
And I’ll probably watch someone play through Metroid Prime 4 instead of playing it myself - I strictly play my Switch in handheld, and that looks like it really needs a bigger screen to be enjoyed properly.

Yeah it immediately reminded me of the 2D Zelda prototype they made to test out concepts that turned into BotW, along with a touch of TotK's creation aspect. I think it looks good too, more interested than if it were a traditional Zelda (er, Link?) game really.

Mario & Luigi's design was immediately recognizable and looks neat, and a surprise cause the original dev AlphaDream died a few years back. Pretty curious if any of those original people are back working on this one.

Speaking of Zelda, Four Swords! ...but not the one I remember. I was thinking of the GameCube one but apparently that was a sequel with its own single player campaign. I guess the GBA one was just a multiplayer mode included with the LttP GBA release.

AND MAHVEL! The Marvel vs Capcom collection was probably the biggest surprise, particularly MvC2. I think this reaction properly represents the collective sentiment from the fighting game community to the announcement. Another neat thing I saw pointed out is that none of those Marvel vs Capcom games have ever been on a Nintendo platform. Maybe I'll finally get decent at it. (Spoiler: I won't, but should still be fun with friends that suck equally)

What a sharp contrast this Nintendo Direct was compared to the PlayStation Showcase couple of weeks ago. One console is old and underpowered and is about to be sunsetted, while the other is powerful and in the prime of its console life. And yet their respective showcases paint complete opposite images.

After getting to watch the direct last night, I am, of course, excited for MP4. The Mario and Luigi game looks delightful, and I think I'm equally excited for it. The Zelda Zelda game...

Okay, so, I know that Nintendo had to squeeze this game into a gap. They surely had neither the time nor the resources to make lots of assets or a custom engine for it. They also likely view it as experimental and risky as to whether the concept will be well-received. So the fact that it's built with the pieces left over from the Link's Awakening remake project is what allows the game to exist at all.

I know all that. I know. But I'm having a hard time mustering much enthusiasm for the game. I didn't enjoy Link's Awakening very much, and I can't help but transfer those negative emotions onto a completely different game that looks exactly like it. So don't mind me, I'm sure I'll play and enjoy it. And wish that it were built from the pieces of a better game while I'm at it...

Edit to add: Oh! I almost forgot. MIO does look interesting, but the trailer was (intentionally, I feel) a little too cryptic to get a good read on it. I mostly just liked the striking art style.

And the Horizon Lego game. What corner of left field did they pull that out of? And is it wrong that I think it looks like fun? Because it looks like fun. Only other Lego game I've tried to play was the Lego Star Wars compilation that had all six (at the time) movies in it, and I didn't make it very far because I found it dull.

Pretty damn great Direct, especially this late in the system's life.

Metroid Prime 4 looks awesome, super exciting to finally see it after waiting for so many years. Seeing the 2025 release date just solidifies my belief that it's going to be the next generation's big cross-gen game like BOTW was this gen.

Zelda: Echoes of wisdom looks very cool. I liked the Link's awakening remake and the art style is still very nice. The gameplay looks interesting and I like that they're doing something different compared to the Link games. September is fricking soon too.

I've been wanting a remaster of DKC Returns for a long time, so I'm super happy that it's finally announced.

I haven't played much of the previous Mario & Luigi games (I should get around to that some day), but the new one looks neat.

MIO and the Marvel vs Capcom collection also got me excited.

The Prime 4 trailer was a weird one for me. Overall I actually wasn’t all that impressed. The graphics were better, the HUD/interface changed a little, but otherwise it largely looked like gameplay that could have come out of any of the prior three entries. Only the open forest vista at the end was something new and different. There’s clearly a lot of this game that isn’t yet ready to be shown.

What did stand out was the return of the Metroid Prime aesthetic. The Prime games have a singular combination of art design, animations, sound effects, music, etc. that are instantly recognizable and couldn’t be confused with any other game. It’s hard to get right too; Prime Hunters on the DS was a credible imitation but didn’t quite nail it the same way. Prime 4 has that aesthetic nailed. Every single second of it could only have come from a Metroid Prime game.

The other part that’s reassuring is that Retro and Nintendo both know just how important it is to get this game right. MP has a stellar reputation they’re absolutely committed to upholding. That does lead to overthinking things and being so afraid of making a misstep they don’t do anything, and the prolonged dev cycle is a sign this has happened, but overall they’ve got the talent and guidance to make sure it lives up to expectations.

Donkey Kong Country is a reason to be excited. Everything else just will have dedicated fans that are very hyped but that’s not me.

Was the MP4 reveal kinda limp? Like, it looked pretty good but the gameplay shown was incredibly basic- even going by series standards. It’s never exactly been a series that lived or died based on its combat but I just think that a stripped down fps with light exploration and an attractive license doesn’t really cut it anymore. I’d be more interested if I thought there was a good chance Nintendo has implemented genre standard improvements, but that’s never a given with Nintendo, they do their own thing.

Here's the thing though: it isn't an FPS. I mean, sure it's first person and has shooting, but trying to implement every FPS genera staple just means making yet another bog standard genera shooter like all the others. Which, of course, is why we end up playing so very many samey COD clones and other boring shooters.

Different is good because different means variety.

Yeah that one came out of nowhere. I mean, I know there's an awesome official Tallneck Lego kit (and a couple of equally cool unofficial builds for the Thunderjaw, Sawtooth, Watcher, and several others) but other than that I've not seen any kind of official connection up to now. The Lego games are super fun for coop too so I'm really looking forward to this one (especially if it has the more tongue-in-cheek approach of the trailer throughout the game).

There is footage on the official Nintendo Japan site that shows more of the Metroid Prime 4 jungle location showcased in the Direct. Not much, but it’s there. I hope the Nintendo is keeping a lot of the features close to the chest and not revealing them in order to surprise and delight - the game is about exploration after all. Metroid games have always had expansive feeling environments using the tech of their time. It’s amazing what Nintendo has managed to do with the Switch hardware with the Zelda games. Not that it will go open world, but I am hopeful Metroid Prime 4 does more with large environments.

Metroid Prime is an fps in the same way Neon Black is, except Neon Black has way more going for it mechanically while MP has very atmospheric light-exploration. I guess that’s what I’m waiting for from MP, something that meaningfully elevates it mechanically. There are a lot of things that make it distinctive from an aesthetic standpoint- the UI, the iconic soundscape, scanning. But that’s all set dressing and while it was a big deal in the GameCube era that kind of thing has gotten less and less impressive over the years while the mechanical experience of playing a MP game has not advanced. I want Samus-like gun-acrobatics and aerial combat, instead of a plodding, lock-on based ground combat system.

I emphatically do not want MP to play like CoD, but currently, historically, MP has not even reached basic CoD standards when it comes to controls or quality of life features like a sprint button. While at the same time not capitalizing on what makes Samus a compelling character to embody in the 2-D games.
