That's still pretty broken, since my armies in Civ don't tend to be that big. They don't need to be in order to crush the AI.
Eh, it's not as wild as it sounds, especially if you're playing against other people. It doesn't help you at all early game, since your economy can't handle even a few modern military. Which basically means you need a good economic engine, and a good military research set before you get to industrial.

For me, I've tested it and you basically need to build heavy commercial, beeline Man-At-Arms, then industrial zones. You can be about a tech level above the AI this way, but you're likely to be even with humans, which means unit volume is what matters.

I've never done a multi-player game, and I can't imagine scheduling it. D&D is hard enough :)

Play by email (or the website Play Your Damn Turn), or other asynchronous methods are the way to go. No need to coordinate schedules, just take your turn every couple of days. Spice it up by playing multiple games at once.

I recently dug out Civ 6 again, and this time its probably the first time I really got into the game.

And I got to say, Mansa Musa on Huge Earth with true start locations is completely, utterly, hilariously silly. Especially if you go with Desert Folklore, Work Ethic and Scripture.
If you like Mansa Musa's start (which, honestly, kind of sucks until you get over to the Nile so you're competing with like 8 other civs) then you should try Australia, who spawns entirely by himself on a continent that caters to his ability, or Brazil, which spawns next to Pantanal and as long as you can manage the constant forest fires has absurd yields in the Amazon.

OTOH, I kinda wish my AI teammate would stop talking shit to me about... me?
There's no nuance to diplomacy in Civ6. The only viable strategy is a binary choice: either become and stay super friends, or don't bother.

I basically try and discover who all my neighbours are; befriend the peaceful civs to collectively attack the the aggressive; then pick off my "friends" one by one.

I started playing Civ VI again a couple weeks ago, and... I'm actually enjoying it a lot more this time around. I've wrapped my head around the district system and accept that sometimes I can't plan perfectly. I've decreased the number of AI players, which is giving me more room to breathe. The quick deals system is actually quite nice, now that I see how it works.

The big thing that's changed and made things more fun, though... is modding in wild numbers of goodie huts, and giving them a wider range of awards. This makes everything progress a lot faster, and obviously heavily benefits the human player.

I like the Barbarian Clans game mode; adding more city states as the game goes benefits my play style. Heroes and Legends felt pointless. Monopolies and Corporations is half good, half a miss; Secret Societies are fun and soak up some of the excess of governor titles. Tech and Civic shuffle is a must. Haven't tried Zombie Defense, Dramatic Ages, or Apocalypse modes.

1UPT is still bad, and religion and tourism are still ghastly stinkers.
