Wait... what??? You can't invert the mouse in AW2? You sure as hell could in AW, and in... well, every other game on Planet Earth.

According to a survey several years ago around 25% of gamers play with inverted Y, and they're concentrated among older gamers who grew up with joysticks (going back to the original Atari) that all mimicked an aircraft joystick. You push forward to go (or look) down. We grew up with the mental picture that the mouse is gripping the top of your head. Push the mouse forward to look down.

That's... stunning. Glad I saw that before purchasing.

I'm not sure if it was a typo or mistake, but they were talking about inverting X (horizontal movement) which I have rarely seen. Typically you do see invert Y (which I, too, am a fan of).

Regarding AW2, loved AW1 and after a long span of radio silence had given up on ever seeing a sequel. Bought the "ultimate" edition when it came out that includes all the DLC, but for some reason still haven't gotten around to actually playing it. Need to correct that this weekend.

Ahh... yes, my bad. It was invert X. That's a bit more rare, but most games do support it.

I do recall one major game I tried and immediately uninstalled when confirmed it had no Y invert option - Genshin Impact. Given that it's a free-to-play with micro-payments for grind reduction you'd think they'd want it as broadly appealing as they could get.

AW2 back on the to-buy list. Normally I don't do survival horror games, but AW was both strange and compelling enough in terms of story and writing that it never seemed like an onerous survival game.

Just so there IS NO CONFUSION about Invert Y in Alan Wake 2. Just took this screen snippet:

But yeah, no Invert X. And I only ever really see Invert X in driving/flying games, not in third person / over the shoulder titles.

And you can REALLY crank down the difficulty if the survival aspects irritate you. The enemies started to get really 'oh, come ON!' to me when they started re-appearing moments after I cleared an area. It fits with the writing of the game, but when it got annoying? Fuck it, crank down the difficulty and just go. And it didn't dawn on me until later that most of the time, if you can? Running is often your best bet.

And I finally got around to playing the DLC.

Some notes:
  • It took me 3 hours to complete all three.
  • There are two songs, both with significant lyrics.
  • The three episodes are very distinct and different, and enjoyable for different reasons.
  • The difficulty, if anything, is cranked DOWN. These little episodes feel very much like the combat is simply there to fit into the narrative.

Spoiler thoughts, no ambiguities, simply what I think and felt and wrote down. Some story spoilers contained within.
Rose's story. So much pink!
It is both quite funny and deeply disturbing, seeing this from Rose's point of view.
Auto-shotgun is OP as hell.
A Scratch sighting?!
The song at the end!

Out of the three, probably the one I enjoyed the least. But it does set the stage for what comes next.
Jesse Fucking Faden! LET'S GO!
Looking for her brother at Coffee World. LOTS of Dark Triangles. Polaris is there, helping you - hence the name of the episode. The interactions feel pretty good.

Very culty. You get just as exasperated with the situation as Jesse gets. However, the Coffee Cult is pretty damn neat - the shadows and enemies talking about coffee is amusing as hell. Go read the glyphs again after drinking the coffee!

And when you find your brother in some weird threshold thing? Oh boy.

I will say this: while I enjoyed this? The back tracking felt unnecessary, and it ultimately just made me want to venture back into The Oldest House.
Holy. Shit.
Sam Lake and Shawn Ashmore are playing THEMSELVES!?!
What a fun, twisty, multiversey, crazy way to tell a story! And that ending? Oh man, WAY to tie it all together!

I was getting Quantum Break vibes through out. Nothing overt, but just a general feeling, you know?

Shifting realities became an exercise of 'what happens next?', and the last few were just 😲 🤯

I enjoyed this Episode a lot. Very cool.

And much like with the main game and Lance Reddick, there is lovely little tribute to James McCaffery.

I enjoyed that rather a lot. I don't know if it was worth $20, but if I enjoy The Lake House DLC as much and it's in the same 2.5 to 3 hours of length? Yeah. Worth it to me. But I love me some Remedyverse.
