Gaming deals, half price caplets

South of the Circle (adventure game/walking sim, 75 on metacritic) is currently free on GOG.

South of the Circle is an emotional narrative experience with a deep multi-layered cinematic story. The main plot asks questions about the consequences of life choices, of pursuing either career or true love, maneuvering between now and the past.

Crafted by State of Play Games, developers of BAFTA-winning Lumino City, BAFTA-nominated KAMI 2 and Apple Design Award Winner INKS, for audiences that seek emotional and heart-wrenching moments with a game.

The modern version of Firaxis' XCOM legacy, Marvel's Midnight Suns, is on sale. Steam has the base game for $20 and the legendary edition for $30.

Green Man Gaming has the legendary for $26.10

Despite seeing Midnight Suns mentioned on the usual gaming websites, it never really made it onto my radar until I picked up my Steam Deck. The two are an excellent match. Right now is also a good time for checking cdkeys, eneba, and GMG for big discounts on lots of games (including console keys, not just pc stuff).

Also noticed GamesNot :p is selling refurbished Steam Decks (non-OLED) at steep discounts. 64GB Deck is $265-279 ("Pro" members get the steeper discount. Might be worth signing up if you'll use the discount on any 1-2 other items over the next year). Even the 512GB LCD is only $342-360, and that plays Zelda BotW at 60 fps, something my Nintendo Switch can't do!

One last mention. Steam Deck users definitely check out Brotato. Excellent game, less than $4, can be played in tiny bite-size chunks of 1-2 minutes, or imbibed for longer sessions.

Looks like it was only free for a few days but the sale price is until 1/5. GOG has South of the Circle currently free on giveaway for the next 40ish hours.
You're correct. Unfortunately their UI mentioned 'offer ends on: 05/01/2024 00:59 EET' which is confusing. South of the Circle superseded the free offering.

The whole sale was like that. It takes until 11:10 or so to work itself out.
I think it's a cache thing - I saw it happen one day when I checked it right on the hour and it still wasn't showing free even 20 minutes later in that browser. Switched to my phone and it worked as expected.

But at least their giveaways haven't taken down the entire store the way Steam would get knocked offline back when valve had great flash sales.

Epic's free game today is twenty minutes until dawn.

I played this on android some time ago on android. It's similar to vampire survivors, The catch is each game has a max of 20 minutes
The shooting and abilities are more player-directed as well. It’s not quite as auto-magic as other Survivor-likes - you have to aim and click and stuff. I picked it up right as it came out of early access a long time ago - it was fun for a few hours, but couldn’t really touch Vampire Survivors. But at the price of free? It’s a great pickup.

The daily epic giveaway is over, so you have a week to add Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy to your account. I think this got decent reviews and was better than the Avengers game which came out around the same time, though it doesn't have the cinematic cast voices
It's pretty solid. I think I played it to about 1/2 way complete before getting distracted. My biggest gripe is that Star-Lord is pretty whiny but I guess that's kind of true to the comics.

The actual game-game isn't much to write home about, but the actual banter and characterizations are more interesting and clever than the movies, overall. Drax, in particular, is fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it.

In the time remaining in the EGS winter sale with its 33% off coupon, I'm wondering whether to pick up any remaining low-hanging (and cheap) fruit. Assassin's Creed Valhalla for instance, which just as a big AC fan I feel almost compelled to play, even though I hear/read many complaints about it being too big / a slog etc. OTOH I'm retiring soon and hey, 10 bucks after coupon.

I've played through 1, the Ezio series, 3, 4 (arrr, pirates!), and Origins. Played some of Unity, Syndicate, Odyssey and am currently playing Mirage.

I can always go back and finish the partially played ones, of course. Plus there is no shortage of other stuff in my backlog.

True, but in case I didn't finish it before it left Game Pass/my GP sub lapsed, would Ubisoft remember my progress in the form of a cloud save?
OT, but you can usually find your local save files and just copy them. I've done that with a couple games I started on Game Pass and later bought on Steam.

Oh, I thought MS obfuscated the location of game saves and all that with their titles.* I made the mistake of buying the PC version of Forza Horizon 3 from the Windows store and found that out the hard way.

*Or do they not do that anymore?

Cocoon is on sale for $17.50. Came out at the end of Sept 2023, so a nice 30% discount. Cocoon won a lot of mentions on best of 2023 lists. Links-

The Beast Inside is currently free on GOG.

The Beast Inside is a unique, gripping twist on thriller and survival horror. The game mixes intriguing story-driven adventure with unnerving survival horror experience. Immerse in the tale of long-buried secrets, personal tragedies, and madness. Play as two protagonists living in different centuries but bounded by dark heritage.

GOG's site is down right now for maintenance, but they don't directly say that. When you go to gog.com, you're redirected to the support pages, but with no usable message of any kind. If you click on the "other" link, the top result is:

"We are undergoing a planned maintenance – services will be back at 10 PM UTC."

... but you can't click on that and get details, you're just redirected to the uninformative main page again. They're handling this very poorly.
