PC shuts off during Baldurs Gate?

You can always try mpat's suggestion first:
Even if you consider it unlikely, switch down PCIe 3.0 anyway. It isn't going to cost you anything (the game isn't going to bottleneck on 3.0 x16), and if it works, it works.
If that fixes it (or even just improves matters) then it would very much suggest the riser is marginal running PCIe 4 signalling rates.

lol... I completely get that. I can work on other people's machines without frustration, but I HATE troubleshooting my own. I very rarely have issues, so it doesn't come up often at all, and when it does then... well, it was probably time for a complete upgrade anyway.

In your case (ha), though, it's easy. You have a perfectly known event that triggers the problem. Shouldn't take more than 20-30 minutes to pull the board out, plug the card directly in, then hop through that portal. No crash - problem solved. Crash - time for new MB or GPU.

Edit: I personally don't get small cases unless it's an aesthetic project. My Core X5 can fit two complete PCs, and it feels small sometimes. I hate working in tiny spaces, especially when they cost more.

Nope. Still happening. Most recently was in the Grymforge, finally finished that annoying "move these platforms around to get to the waypoint" part, and I had Shadowheart playing maestro on the switches. Camera was flying back to her so I could have her rejoin the party and blammo. PC just shut down. Had to do it all over again since I didn't save in time.

Memtest86 didn't reveal any ram issues. So either PSU or Motherboard. Which right now I simply don't want to replace. I have too much shit to do.
Net time, shoot arrows at the levers.

I don't game, but randomly saw this. I have similar issues with my 6900XT, where some compute workloads run fine, others immediately black screen, and yet others eventually black screen. Although unrelated to your (and my) issues, this thread does point out some of the architectural idiosyncrasies that exist in AMD world. My gut feel is its timing/memory reference pattern dependent. Perhaps by tweaking timings, or Easter egging every part in your build, but particularly memory and motherboard, you could come across a stable configuration.

Edit: T7pos.

I am also experiencing this issue. Throughout the first act I would get a hard shutdown. I was perplexed as to why it was happening but it was rare enough I wasn't concerned. Then I made it to Act 2. Now I am getting repeated power-offs at the battle following my failure to stop Isobels kidnapping. 3 in a row.

I havent done any serious troubleshooting yet, but my system has been rock solid up until BG3. I have noticed a few other people having a similar issue. I haven't noticed any correlations related to the brand or model of GPU. Typically I would consider this a hardware issue. Now I am not so sure.

Sooooo, BG3 was causing me trouble as well. Hardware is 5800X on x570 board, 32GB RAM, single NVMe, RTX3090, and a 700W Silverstone PSU. Hard crash, no video, nothing to go on. The brutal part was that the system liked crashing when I hit F5. Loltasitc.

Anyways, the problem hasn’t recurred since I installed a 1000W Corsair.

3090 on a 700W PS is madness - I wouldn't have been surprised by that.

An update. Ended up purchasing a 7900xt for a really good price. With a fresh Windows install and the same 700watt PSU, I am no longer getting mysterious hard shutdowns. For now. If nothing changes, that narrows down the problem to the Windows installation or the 5700xt (which never had a problem with any other game). I am going to install the 5700xt in another PC and run some stress tests to see if I can reproduce the problem.

Hola friends.

Just an FYI, never found a fix or cause. Just finished the House of Grief fight and, hard off again. Vulkan or DirectX doesn't matter anymore. Can't get through the talking to Lady Shar without the system just turning off. I've played Helldivers2 and Warhammer Darktide for hours without this happening, so this is definitely a BG3 only issue.

Methinks that I will never beat this game.
