I think the aluminum cased apple watches are a good compromise in terms of durability
If only they had a sapphire crystal. The face of my OG watch was destroyed (Warning: hyperbole!) within weeks. That of my SS S3 is factory fresh. (Not hyperbole.)

IDGAFF about scratches on the case — it’s a tool watch. Besides, the Durablack coating has done very well too.

I'll keep buying stainless Apple Watches simply because I like how it looks-- the more durable watch face is a nice bonus, but mostly I just like how the polished stainless looks on my wrist better than brushed aluminum and that's worth the extra cost to me for something that I'm wearing all day, every day.

Just chiming in that I still absolutely love my first-gen Ultra and it still looks brand new after hiking to a glacial lake in Montana and scuba diving in the Florida Keys. The huge and crazy bright screen, robust case, superior bands, and insane battery life make it well worth the $800. I recommend it to everyone, even if you never do anything outdoorsy with it.

Well, on the software side, my S5 has reached the end of the road, so I’m going to be getting a new one this year. Anyone know if there are any new design rumours for the S10? Or SX or whatever it will be. (I’m guessing X.)

Funny you should ask, because this rumor made the rounds just this morning. If accurate, it suggests that the AW X won't get a significant re-design of the form factor, has many have speculated, but that it will get a significantly bigger screen.

Ironically, since this topic successfully dissuaded me from an Ultra due to the size. 45mm is about as big as I want to go, although I doubt I’d notice it much if 46mm includes the bezel.

Idle thought here. The SoC is getting more and more efficient. The screen is getting more and more efficient (and thin). That means that over time a greater proportion of the battery will be available for sensors - which is good because Apple wants to add lots of sensors.

So is getting a bit larger a prelude to Apple adding a new larger sensor - like say the blood glucose monitoring sensor they’ve been working on for decade. Not that I think they’re adding it this year or even next year, but it would behoove Apple to have people used to larger watches before they try to integrate that new tech.

Yeah, if it also has an Ultra sized battery, I'm going to feel a little bummed I wasn't able to stretch my S4 until Q3.
The Ultra-sized battery is possible because of its chonky case. This putative 50mm Apple Watch X may have the big screen size combined with the thinness people want, but it'll have to sacrifice the Ultra's battery life to do it.

But I think most people will be happy with that trade off.

That would be my assumption as well. I'm just saying if...

Hmmmmmm. I’ve been considering moving up in size anyway and I have been eyeing the Ultra, but I am not that sporty and it is a chonker, almost on the “OH LAWD HE COMIN”-level for me.

Will be very interesting to see if this turns out to be anything.

But you question how accurate it would be.

Much like the ECG and Pulse Ox features, absolute medical-grade accuracy probably isn't Apple's goal (and involves too much meddlesome regulatory approval of the sort I'm sure Apple has no stomach to suffering through). It's about spotting trends and using that data to motivate people to seek attention. If a Watch-contained blood pressure monitor could at least show "hey, blood pressure seems to be above the mean" as a general trend, that may be enough to encourage someone to seek a doctor's advice and get some actual data.

This. For now.

With all the Apple Watch sensors my assumption is that over time, as it becomes possible to incrementally improve accuracy (both of the hardware and the ML models interpreting the hardware readout) Apple will take advantage. At some point, and maybe this is still years away, they will cross that bridge to ‘must be FDA certified’ and start rolling out more explicitly medical diagnosis features.
