[ARS] The DC-Vault Perpetual Thread (Part 3) - Runaway Target

I just got a PM from the staff at DC-Vault following a post of mine agreeing that Denis@home should be delisted. Attaching it below.

Re: Vault admins

We are in the process of trying to get more representation from other teams as admins. Could you present the idea to your team and discuss whom they would like to represent them here in the Vault forums? Then just let me or Rusty know. We are trying to get more discussion and activity in matters going. I browse a lot of team forums and find from time to time people complaining thinking things should have been done this way or that way yet they never contribute when we are publicly testing a project for inclusion or discussing removal. We would like to improve the Vault and how things are done, but we can only do that with the teams support. Again, just let us know as I don't think your team has representation yet.

-----------

Does anyone want to take a stab at that?

Sorry to see you go. I really don't have interaction with site leadership, so I wouldn't know.

If you're killing the moniker anyway - would there be any association by leaving your DCA stuff intact?

I know it doesn't seem like it now, but there's a possibility that (far?) down the road, you may want to come see some of us again.

Anyway, good luck in your life and travels. Emergency management is exciting. Politics... hmmmm.. lets not go there. ;)
You're right, there isn't. I'll leave it alone for now.

Well, rats. Sorry to hear you are leaving :(

May God bless you, and may you thrive
Thanks to both of you. Lots of memories from this place. But like our last house, time to move on.

Peace!

fractal":1c96ymsd]For those on auto-pilot..

Several new projects in vault that ARS scores poorly in with room for major improvement. We dropped from 3rd overall to 4th overall because of these projects

Universe@home - Physical Science
DENIS@home - Bio med

There's an easy 2-3k between them sitting there.
DENIS got delisted because of no work. That took ARS back into 3rd overall.
Whizbang is hammering Universe@home. He is the #1 individual for today. I am about to get splattered as he flys past me on the team. A few more on Universe@home would solidify our position there until DENIS starts having work.

I just joined my Devil's Canyon i5k and GTX 960 on Cosmology@Home. Do I need to do anything special to join the Ars Technica team besides... joining the team on the BOINC website?

Edit - Wow, fuck that client. It doesn't obey any of my CPU limitations. Went into the ProgramData location to make an XML config, tried web and local prefs, nothing. 100% on all four cores. Sluggish PC. No thanks.

The project you picked won't use your GPU.

Try using the BOINC menu "tools" -> "computing preferences" -> "processor usage" -> "use at most" -> enter "99".

You should see three cores in use. Use "50" if you only want to give half.

edit: I just checked cosmology@home and its new app runs virtual so may not honor those settings. I have no experience with projects that use VM or other containers.

We just took back first place in the Math category from DPC with a little help from a hundred cores on VGTU. I may get tired of high core LGA1366 boxes after my next electricity bill ;)

It looks like they noticed and have increased their production. That isn't much activity on that project so we both have plenty of room for advancement.

Pogs and universe still have room for advancement over in Physical Sciences.

Yeah, fortunately VDW is a pretty easy project. I took it to 10k earlier this year just to see how it went. I have a few machines back on it now.

The biggest gotcha is it wants 1.3 GB of RAM per work unit with that number increasing over time. Most of my i7's have at least 16 but I have a couple of 16 & 24 thread machines that run outta memory on VDW.

Anyone paying half attention to the vault should be warned that DPC has taken VGTU as their "project of the month" and I can't keep up with their entire team by my self. The gotcha for VGTU is it strongly prefers Linux over Windows. So much so that windows only users might want to run Linux/boinc in a VM if you want to play on VGTU.

fractal":2ipps68p]Yeah, goofy is, well, goofy. It's pretty easy to game though. Spin up a couple dozen vm's just to run it.

In any case, this single project is the reason we are 6th place in the Vault, instead of in the top 3.

AFAICT it is entirely compatible with other projects, and affects their performance not at all ==> please consider putting it on any and all machines you have (VMs or not :eyebrow: ). With even just a few more machines we can make good progress upward. Thanks!

Goofy and vdw are the most relevant, but you could also consider enigma@home, VGTU, and maybe starting back up Citizen Science Grid.

Great to see you helping out in Goofy!

Started back up on Enigma again. It's been a while. Added an account on VGTU, will be adding more CPU tasks as heating season starts. They pretty much heat my house...
Everyone should be running Goofy, it takes almost no resources at all, much like WUProp.

Ars Technica: 4th
272,108.88

Czech National Team: 5th
272,089.19

Thanks again to all the new arrivals (especially in GoofyXGrid, but also any of the others) who've made this possible!
How cool is that! We went up a place in Goofy and netted 103 Vault points.

Spenster":ptxxjubq]With poem being removed from the vault, anyone have a suggestion on where I can drop a few GPUs that would be helpful?
Are your GPUs NV or AMD? Here's at least some of the NV projects:

  • *Albert
    *Asteroids
    *BURP
    *Collatz Conjecture
    *Einstein
    *Milkyway
    *Moo! Wrapper
    *PrimeGrid
    *SETI
Looking above I see that you have an NV 1070. Note that it won't yet work on GPUGrid. What other GPUs are you running?

I just got most of the pieces in to make a new machine. I am burning it in on VTUG while waiting for the memory. It is only 4 sockets of 6 cores / 12 threads per socket in a 1U case. I went with a slower / lower power E5645 instead of my preferred X5675 to manage the heat in the 1U form factor. It is ticking along with temperatures in the 50-75c range without the shroud. I will install the shroud and move it into the rack in the garage when the memory comes. Fortunately VTUG doesn't need much memory and a 4G stick per processor from the parts bin is enough for it. I am going to use it for a real project when I get the memory but it can sit on BOINC for a little while.

I am moving off VTUG once I get to 10 million. I am thinking of doing POGS for a while but then again, Citizens grid has more points available.

Holy Moly Batman, we're in 2nd!

Ars Technica
(Up 1 place) - 2nd place - 263,463.53 points

Team Norway
(Down 1 place) - 3rd place - 263,462.30 points

http://www.dc-vault.com/showscores.php

(Movers And Shakers: Ars Technica has overtaken Team Norway to take position 2 in the Vault.)

Looks like Van Der Waerden Numbers is ending and will be de-vaulted. Right now the overall Vault scores are:

Ars Technica: 263,645.17

Team Norway: 263,490.47

Since we'll lose 270 points more than TN due to this removal, we're going back to 3rd place at
least until we grab a couple more Goofy places (we went up 2 places today in Goofy).

Some good news is that those Goofy 2 places also moved us from 18th to 16th in the Misc category.

Edit: It happened last night and we're now temporarily 3rd overall again. A positive note is that we're now #1 in the Math category.
