[TPR] GIMPS Perpetual Thread: Part 13 - A 'prime' thread to announce M48 and find M49

Me, I was in a bad situation, now resolved. And back in the game ...
Would very much like to hear about your African adventures, if you care to share them with us. Yeah, one of my favorite movies as a kid was "King Solomon's Mines" (50s version). Maybe even had something to do with going into Anthropology as a field of study. Your experience with mining in Africa fits right in...

Really? I want to keep using an antique 8400GS, but the serber boart I have chosen could run multiple cards. Trouble is that these cards can't run themselves ... I would lose a core or two. I have to settle on a six core xeon for now, so cores are scarce.

garo[/url]":1xctp31e]Hi all! Haven't popped up here for a while so just thought I'd pop in and say hello. I got a used GTX 580 for Xmas so am doing some mfaktc factoring for the project. TPR is not the leader it used to be in the project but I think a couple of powerful GPUs can propel us back in the top 5. Yes not a typo, a couple of powerful GPUs is all it will take.

Actually, you can TF on the GPU without feeding it from a CPU.

version 0.20-pre6 (2012-12-30)
- contributors
- George Woltman (Prime95 author, http://www.mersenne.org)

- GPU sieve supported on GPUs (CC >= 2.0), thank you very much, George!
GPU sieving is enabled by default, for old GPU (CC 1.x) you must disable it manually in mfaktc.ini (variable SieveOnGPU)

(Note that this is the program for Nvidia cards.)

Yes. Just resurrected the Ars Technica login, but P95 crunching never ceased for me. (Did I start in something like 2002?!) True, I progressively lost access to the whole farm I had previously, but a new box added recently and I'm apparently number 5 producer on TPR - so that can't be much of a challenge these days!

How's everyone from the "old" days doing?

FWIW, here is what three reasonably-priced (GTX980) cards can do in about nine days:

I've been messing around with mfaktc on my Windows 7 dual GTX 460 box. It's quite a pain manually downloading work and uploading results. My worktodo has run dry a few times when I miscalculated how much I'd need. Is there anything to automate this? I've read about MISFIT, how do you set it up?

I manually feed my GPUs once a week. The workload is pretty consistent so I just reserve a little extra.

Are you using the GPU72 interface to get work?

If you post for help there they will hook you up.

That's quite true. Look where I was when you last posted this in January compared to now. Although I have done some first time and double check tests, most of that is trial factoring on my GPUs.

The chart Xy posted - the ECM, that's me, my latest foray. I need a machine for that - lots of cores, HT, and at least 32 GB of ram. I saw a xeon, 12 cores + HT, sounds nice but it will delay my build another month. Ideas? Anything close but cheaper? That I can order next week. Parts will come through Dubai or Montreal, via DHL.
Glad to hear that you're well! As far as CPUs, consider Ryzen 2700 for low power (8 core/16HT and 65w) and it still will probably outperform most xeons. For max performance think about Threadripper. Personally if you want that much crunching power I'd consider just getting 2 Ryzen machines.

Click on Colaboratory on front page, then click on gpu72_tf

You will need to have a username with gpu72 and also you will need to get an access key, also shown on the front page.

Then click on 'Execute" button and it will then just start, and you get the chance to crunch with either a Tesla K80 or P100, for 12 hour slots. Then leave it for 12 hours, and then start again, and then ditto

Send me a PM if you still don't follow
