The rebirth of the neat application I found thread...

Two apps that not get enough attention. Markup/notes editor and music/CD collection app.

It's like CMD but much better. Even has a clone of the dos edit command called yedit. Great for 64 bit systems since edit no longer exists. Works with all batch scripts.

Also works on any nt based system. So dig out that old 386 and NT 3.1 on it :D

I decided to checkout MusicBee over the weekend based on your recommendation. Where is the equalizer? As you can see from the screenshot, I've activated it through the menu options but I don't see it anywhere on my screen. What am I missing here?

I just click the EQ icon (see below). I did the selection like you in menu and it does not do anything for me - either on or off. I still got my EQ. It seems to activate another control scheme I am not aware off. Many ways to layout your MusicBee. I got my initial panes set and never had the need to change them around. Got my album covers arranged like in my old iTunes layout and am happy.

Something is definitely off for me. In the full sized player, I do not see that icon at all. However, if I switch to the mini-player, I can right-click on the album cover and then that equalizer icon appears like the screenshot shows here:

MusicBee miniplayer.png

I'm puzzled as to why that icon doesn't show up in the full sized player though. I haven't done much customization since I installed it, other than just trying out some themes. Looks like I'll have to make a visit to the MusicBee forums and get some help over there.

Thanks for mentioning MusicBee.

I'm glad this is the case for you as well cuz I thought I was going nuts or missing something obvious!

Something happened, I finally got the equalizer icon to appear in the main player. I switched to a different skin (something from the 'Dark Metro Series') and the application shut down & restarted. All of a sudden the button appeared.

I tried several different skins when I first installed it and couldn't find it anywhere. It's so strange it's working properly now.

I realize it's out of date now and out of fashion, but WSUS is very useful. But you can increase it's value by using
WSUS Package Publisher
WPP is my go to for deployment. For MSI packages, there is nothing easier, if you have WSUS in place.

The main benefit is to deploy MSI files to your users through the Windows update process. It's seamless as far as uses are concerned. Stuff just appears. It's better than GPO deployment as you get some level of reporting, and it's not dependent on the wifi being connected prior to use login.

Over the past decade I've deployed as diverse software as
-Symantec AV and numerous updates
-Adobe reader & updates
-Flash (and flash and flash and ..... It was flash that prompted me to look at other solutions to GPO deployment)
-zscaler
-MS LAPS
-Minecraft education edition and numerous updates.

If you don't have intune but you need to install an msixbundle then you can break it down to a PS1 script and deploy that via Windows updates and WPP

Yes, SCCM can do all this, and more.
Intune is taking over.

But SCCM is overkill.
Intune isn't yet in use full time in my organisation, but it is coming.

Yes, WSUS (And this WPP) has a use by date that is reasonably fast approaching. But it's still useful in it's niche.

Great it's working for you now! The app might just have needed a reboot or some skins hide it? Anyways, I hope you'll enjoy the player as much as I do. I've just got a few hundred albums archived with it, but it's a joy to use/listen with.

After I posted on the forum about my issue, I did a google search for hoping that some kind of solution would come up. This thread on the MusicBee forum came up in the search and it said to delete the "DialogStateSettings.dat" file. (It's located in C\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\MusicBee. It will create a clean copy for you when you restart the application.

So I tried that solution but I made the mistake of not shutting down my application first. I completely forgot that I had it minimized to the system tray. So I went through the program menu, exited out, then restarted. Nothing happened afterwards.

Later in the evening I tried out a different skin just on a whim and when I did that, the equalizer button suddently appeared. It's so weird. Like I said I didn't do much customization when I installed it over the weekend other than trying out some skins. I'm guessing somehow that DialogState file got corrupted somehow. In any case, it's just fine now. Thanks.

It's a program to modify the context menus in explorer. What's interesting is that on windows 11 it also brings back the old context menu, but it's all in the modern mica look and adds a bunch of other features using the default settings

I'm looking for a replacement for a pretty neat timer app.. I cant even remember where i got it, but ive literally been using this daily for 15 years. Unfortunately, it seems to have issues with Win11, even in Win7 compatibility mode. Anyone have any recommendations? I really like the separate very small UI it has, multiple timers can run independently with alarms.

Kind of a derail for this thread, but syncthing doesn't work well on iOS. Instead I use an Obsidian plugin called "Remotely Save", saving to webDAV running on my synology NAS. I permanently VPN to my home via wireguard to access it. The plugin also supports E2E encryption, can use S3, dropbox, or onedrive too (but not google drive unless you pay) and while it isn't even remotely elegant, it does work and I haven't had any problems with data loss after a year or two actively using it. Data on the NAS is backed-up also, but honestly just use dropbox, with E2E it's fine.

WineVDM/OTVDM

64 bit versions of windows can't run old win 3.1 software anymore. This allows you to run those programs. Also, it's history is odd because it's a port of Wine, which in itself allows Linux to run windows programs.

Included in this is wine's version of winhlp32.exe, the old windows help viewer that doesn't exist on modern windows. Now soddenly all those old win32 program with hlp files can be viewed again as it's bene removed from win 11

FMJ Software's ImageEye is a tiny, speedy, single-purpose app for viewing image files. I've been using it exclusively for as long as can remember... possibly decades. I paid for it, back when it was shareware, but it has been free (donationware) for quite a while now.

Image Eye is a specialized image viewer — made for the sole purpose of viewing images as quickly and practically as possible — nothing else! You get a window with the picture only — no bulky menus, tool-bars or other fancy but annoying clutter. By default, even the window title-bar is hidden when you don't need it, leaving just a thin black border around the image.

Checked out the Notable program @Tushmeister posted. I’m on Obsidian right now and the note syncing is inelegant unless you subscribe, which I don’t, so interested in alternatives.

Unfortunately Notable has no mobile versions. They’re in development but the site says they’ll be mandatory subscriptions when released. So the search continues.
I've been using GitJournal. Not perfect, but I love that the backend storage is just a git repo. Can edit on GitHub on the web, or on the desktop with VsCodium or Vim or whatever, and just commit and push the changes back to GitHub. Which is basically exactly what I want. And mobile-first, which makes sense, since on the desktop you can just use whatever you want.

Edit: works with GitLab as well, and really any Git repo upstream afaik, GitHub is just what I'm using.

You can already use obsidian to sync with git, and obsidian is an extremely good notes program.
Looks cool and very full-featured, maybe more of a personal wiki/knowledge-base kind of app than what I think of as a notes app?

My needs are pretty basic (title note, write note, edit note, read note, maybe put notes in folders), so if the personal wiki style thing is what you're looking for, yeah, GitJournal is probably too simple.

Try XNotes Timer. I've been using it for over 25 years. I see from your screenshot that the software you use has multiple timers. XNotes does not have that feature but you can launch multiple instances of it. I googled for the original website where I found it years ago but it is no longer free. I found a free version on Softpedia website. It's currently hosting an old version but I just tested it now and it seems to work just fine on my Win7 system.

The reason why I like it so much is that it's extremely small (340 KB) and it doesn't have to be installed. You can save it anywhere on your HDD/SDD - doesn't even have to be the C: drive! You simply double click on the EXE file to run. I can't guarantee that it will work on Win10 but it's worth a try. Good luck.
