Well, it’s time to start getting hopes prematurely primed. Sorry for stealing your thunder, @sliver7 , but I want to talk about the HoF results, and it’s not 2023 anymore :p

I have no idea what the Twinkies are going to do this year. Last season was beyond my wildest expectations, and would not be surprised if they regressed to standard Minnesota sports mediocrity. But hey, hope springs eternal, especially in the halcyon days before Spring Training!

Pitchers and Catchers begin reporting on 14 Feb 24.
Countdown clock: https://springtrainingcountdown.com/

And I now present our first big argument of the year: 2024 Hall of Fame Results:
Beltre, Helton, and Mauer are in (and Jim Leyland).

Link:

From MLB.com, the full results in the spoiler.

Candidates needed 289 votes to be elected. Full BBWAA ballot results are below:
Adrian Beltré: 366 votes, 95.1%
Todd Helton: 307 votes, 79.7%
Joe Mauer: 293 votes, 76.1%
Billy Wagner: 284 votes, 73.8%
Gary Sheffield: 246 votes, 63.9%
Andruw Jones: 237 votes, 61.6%
Carlos Beltrán: 220 votes, 57.1%
Alex Rodriguez: 134 votes, 34.8%
Manny Ramirez: 125 votes, 32.5%
Chase Utley: 111 votes, 28.8%
Omar Vizquel: 68 votes, 17.7%
Bobby Abreu: 57 votes, 14.8%
Jimmy Rollins: 57 votes, 14.8%
Andy Pettitte: 52 votes, 13.5%
Mark Buehrle: 32 votes, 8.3%
Francisco Rodriguez: 30 votes, 7.8%
Torii Hunter: 28 votes, 7.3%
David Wright: 24 votes, 6.2%

Players receiving less than 5% will drop off future ballots)
José Bautista: 6 votes, 1.6%
Victor Martinez: 6 votes, 1.6%
Bartolo Colon: 5 votes, 1.3%
Matt Holliday: 4 votes, 1%
Adrián González: 3 votes, 0.8%
Brandon Phillips: 1 vote, 0.3%
Jose Reyes: 0 votes, 0%
James Shields: 0 votes, 0%

Now, I love Joe Mauer. I’ve owned two of that man’s jerseys. Do I think he gets in eventually? Yes? First ballot? No, did not see that coming. Helton was a maybe. Beltre getting 95% though? Yeah, that makes sense.

And to the 5 writers who voted for Big Sexy? You are lovers of fun, and you should be praised for your candor.
….

So, and away we go. Hot stove and signings are still happening. And the Dodgers look terrifying. Who is going to stop them outside of ritual animal sacrifices in secret chambers beneath St Louis sports bars?

I forgot that candidates with less than 5 percent of votes get booted from the ballot, so Big Sexy will never make the HoF.

I don't know what Seattle is going to do. They fell apart late August into early September and tried to mount a comeback but failed. I am again tired of getting my hopes up of them making the playoffs. 2022 was a good year, but odds are the M's will miss the playoffs again.

At least Ohtani can only terrorize us three times a year instead of 13-16. Trout gets injured too much so I'm not worried about him. Astros can continue to kick rocks. Oakland is dead to me (sorry A's fans, it was your leadership that soured me, not the fan base). Texas is meh... yeah they won it all but I'm happy to see Houston eat crap from their rival.

I'm anticipating another lackluster, injury-plagued year from the Yankees resulting in another absence from the playoffs. After striking out on Yamamoto we allowed Marcus Stroman to meme his way into a contract. Beyond Cole our entire starting pitching lineup is completely suspect. Will Carlos Rodon remember he's not the worst pitcher in baseball? Will Nestor Cortes and his nasty 90mph heat bring his ERA back south of 5? Did I make up Clark Schmidt as the #5 or is he actually a real player on this roster? You don't know. You have to look him up. They will undoubtedly throw a $30M+ AAV contract at Blake Snell and if he signs I guarantee he's injured by June.

Meanwhile, the offense is going with a stars & scrubs fantasy strategy. Filling out the outfield next to All-Stars like Aaron Judge and Juan "I'm gone" Soto is....Alex Verdugo? Will he rather retire than shave? Trent Grisham? If you can trade for guys that can't bat over .200 I guess you have to take that chance. Jasson Dominguez isn't back for a while after his UCL tried to leave the team last year, and even when he does return The Martian's reputation is writing checks his short king body can't cash. The infield is in sorry shape, as we're running DJ LeMahieu back out there again (FUN FACT: He's 35 years old and under contract for another three years), and Anthony Rizzo's probably still fighting his way through the fog, Anthony Volpe had a .283 OBP and he's the future of the franchise. By the time Judge and Soto injure themselves in May, Gleyber Torres might be our best player. Also, as a reminder, Giancarlo Stanton hit .191/.275/.420, and we pay him $25M per year for the next four seasons.

All the guys who would have filled out this roster and made it a competitive playoff challenger with long term growth prospects, we traded away for spare parts. Jordan Montgomery, who had a breakout last year, was traded away for Harrison Bader, who was already hurt and literally in a walking boot when the Yankees acquired him and was only ever going to be a bench bat, and isn't even with the team anymore. Michael King, former stud middle reliever with a 158 ERA+, was sent packing to San Diego as part of our Soto rental and Grisham burial. He's going to be their #3 starter. You know who could use a #3 starter? The Yankees.

The farm is depleted. There's no help coming up for what's undoubtedly going to be dark years ahead as we continue to waste Cole and Judge's primes trying to plug roster gaps with tissue paper. I guess there's a chance Soto re-signs, but I'd wager the NY media gets on his ass after one of his traditional slow starts, team injuries and badness put the stink of failure on the whole franchise, and he books it to Houston or wherever because we're throwing too much money at corpses to match the market offer. I am, you may be able to surmise, not optimistic about this year.

Well, Yadi's back as a "special advisor" this year, so assuming said sacrifices are sufficient and he gets a new neck tattoo, perhaps October devil magic will be back on the menu.

I'm hoping for a better Cardinals team this year, and I think that will be the case, but I'll be surprised if they do much better than a few games over .500. Bill DeWitt is notoriously, um, "thrifty" as an owner, so we were never going to land the top tier free agents. Sonny Gray should be good for the #1 spot in the rotation, and we also picked up Gibson & Lynn who... pitch. A trade for another (good) starter or long reliever would be nice, but I'm not holding my breath at this point. Hopefully the pitching staff will take extra time to work with Contreras this Spring Training after that debacle early last season. The team needs to improve their fundamentals, which took a nosedive last season. Not too worried about the offense. I'm still a little puzzled by the Matt Carpenter signing. I guess he has "veteran leadership skills" that we're lacking in the clubhouse, but I really think he should've retired after that one partial season raking with Yankees a couple years ago.

Oli Marmol's gotta be on thin ice as manager this year (and rightly so). Fingers crossed he doesn't throw his players under the bus publicly or feud with the umps again. Yes, C.B. Bucknor's terrible, but it seemed like Oli was just asking the umps to throw his ass in the jackpot last season.

LOL! (And I still don't know -- haven't looked him up yet :) )

Anthony Rizzo's probably still fighting his way through the fog

I am far from a Yankee's fan, but brain injuries are awful and I really hope Rizzo was able to recover in the off-season. Not because I want him to help the team, but because he's a person who deserves to live a life outside post-concussion symptoms. That said, I haven't seen any news about him -- has the local NY sports shows covered it at all?

By the time Judge and Soto injure themselves in May, Gleyber Torres might be our best player.
Torres seems to demolish the O's every time I watch them play NY, but I get the impression that he's less good against the other teams?

Only to mention that he's been cleared for spring training, though it's discouraging that the tone and language used about it always seems to be the kind reserved for, say, drivers returning from bad F1 crashes. Even if he's back at 100%, that 100% represents a 34 year old with a bum knee and a bad back on the downslope of his career.

Like many other aspects of the Yankees, Gleyber too is coasting on his 2019 reputation. He's been perfectly pedestrian against the Orioles (and everyone else) ever since.

The Nats were competitive in a lot of games last year, much to the surprise of everyone. I'm hoping to improve on that a bit, but we have so many holes I don't know what to expect.

I'll be that we see Crews and Wood as late season call-ups but it'll depend on how they do in higher levels. Rutledge and Cavalli should also get some MLB time so we'll find out if they are busts or not. Abrams, Gray and Gore should continue to improve and maybe we can extend one or 2 of them now and not have to worry about that later on. I fully expect we'll start spending on FAs after this season and the next.

And finally I hope they come to some sort of decision about ownership and it doesn't involve them selling to Leonsis. I'm already pissed at him for moving the Wizards and Caps to VA but it is what it is(and stings less since I don't live there any more).

Also, I asked this last year but didn't get much of a response, is there any interest in a fantasy league? My last league stopped last year and I'm kinda itching to play in a league again.

Wow, I checked it out and you're right - he had a monster year against Baltimore in 2019 (26-66 with 13 HR and 20 RBI in 18 games; that's .394 average and 1.512 OPS), but hit a combined 5 home runs against them in the last 3 seasons (45 games; .818 OPS in the best of those years). I could've sworn his big year was 2022, nothing like "that thing happened 5 seasons ago, not 2 seasons ago" to make me feel old.

In other things I'm wrong about, I had assumed his monster 2022 year had something to do with pushing the left field fence back at Camden Yards, but that actually happened before the '22 season.

Joc Pederson seems to just be circling the baseball world, slowly swirling back to and around Los Angeles.
… uh… I may have taken that in a direction I didn’t really mean to…. But there you go!

Ok, these are barf-worthy. The pullover is...ok, I guess but the solid block font on the away jersey is stupid looking. The cursive script was just about perfect IMO. Also, this is the last year for the Nats City Connect jerseys and, I know I'm biased, but I think they were easily in the top 3 of all City Connect. I'd be on board with making those a permanent addition to the jersey rotation.

The cherry blossom jersey and cap needs to be a permanent part of the Nats uniform rotation.
These are…. Meh.

Nats and Wizards, no opinion.

I fully expect my baseball teams (Cards ands Mariners) to shit the bed this season. Trash talk to your heart's content. It's all in fun.

I get you, I just found it funny lol.

Nats signed Joey Gallo. Fully expecting about 6000 strikeouts from him this year. I just hope he hits enough homers to be an enticing trade target at the deadline.

@xcmt needs to stop reading the comments on The Athletics' Yankee articles :ROFLMAO:

Spring training is a time for optimism. That attitude is reserved for their first losing streak in April, when all the pessimists of every team cry out that their team is toast and the season is over.

Verdugo is an upgrade over LF last season. Full stop. Do I like him? not in the slightest - but he's an upgrade on the field.

Juan Soto? Clearly an upgrade and I'd be worried if anyone thought otherwise. He makes any team better - the question is simply by how much.

The real question remains the health of DJ, G, and Rizzo. Though I'm not sure G's health even matters to their success at this point - but I'm always hopeful he finally learns he needs to do pilates & yoga in the offseason to lower his risk of leg injuries. Maybe he's mature enough to have finally done that after seeing Judge's success with pliability training [though he still has the high heat issue, which is likely due to his stance changes.. hopefully..].

King is the only loss that really hurts. Thorpe is a Changeup first guy who relies on command- and while he had great numbers in MiLB - a rare few of those guys ever translate to MLB beyond back of the rotation. The rest of the arms traded were unlikely to ever make the Yankee MLB roster. Spencer Jones is a potential stud [his base running numbers are Elly good]. Chase Hampton looks solid - at worst a good #3/4 [higher if he can find a little more velo through training]. Will Warren is a solid spot starter. The Gas Station regularly turns a few randos into solid bullpen pieces [they amp the Statcast numbers that other teams look for in trades too - plus that seam shifted wake slider is looking legit - and they've had good prior history with this seasons "returning hotness" .. the splitter]. The farm is fine - they have (4) top 100 guys still. Could it use a few more arms and infielders? Sure - but the Yankees can just spend to plug those holes - that's the benefit of being a big market team [well, once they lose the Stanton anchor?].

If Rodon is 25% better than his worst season [not crazy], Nestor can be nasty enough + Stroman can each give you 120-140 innings of solid #3/4 production - the Yankees will be better than last year. Clarke Schmidt is just the new Jordan Montgomery - a solid innings eater who usually keeps you in a game, with the occasional blowup [who only "broke out" after tweaks to his pitches & pitch mix by one of the best pitching development teams in the business - St Louis - he was never going to be that guy in NY due to an overly rigid philosophy that needs to change].

The big question is if the Yankees can catch the Rays & O's - who have their own questions.. and what version of Vlad & Friends shows up this year. Wildcard is well within their grasp. They should collect more wins than last season, but not confident they have a shot at the division crown unless the Baltimore rotation can't muster or the Rays get bit by the injury bug.

Anywho.. I was not terribly excited to watch Yankee baseball last season [actually watched more Angels & Mariners games last year].. I am looking forward to see if Soto can perform this year. Still wish they jettisoned Cash & Boone though - not looking forward to his bullpen management again..

Like many other aspects of the Yankees, Gleyber too is coasting on his 2019 reputation. He's been perfectly pedestrian against the Orioles (and everyone else) ever since.
Gleyber was the 6th best 2B by WRC+ last year [and 2022]. His Def knocked him down WAR lists a little.. but that's pretty much the opposite of pedestrian. The problem, is that he's streaky - which gets frustrating to watch on a regular basis - but by the numbers, there are few better at the position. I think people don't realize how weak 2B is around the MLB [only 13 had a positive offensive WAR in 2023]. Not saying I'd pay him $25m+ a season, but he's not as bad as sour Yankees fans want to pretend.

Polanco to the Mariners from the Twins.
Makes sense from the Twins side. They have Correa and Lewis to play the middle/left side, and Polanco is a shortstop by trade - the team has plenty of those. Money and a bunch of younger guys heading back Minnies way.

And Justin Turner signed with the Blue Jays.
And Los Angeles added another high velocity arm in Paxton.
And Aaron Hicks signed with the Angels.

Quite a few moves this weekend.

I think the Smashing Pumpkins summed up my feelings upon hearing the news that the Angelos family [finally] sold: "Today is the greatest day I've ever known."

My wife asked me if I disliked the former ownership because they were bad people or bad baseball people, which at least brought me down to earth a little bit -- Peter A undeniably did a lot of good for the Baltimore community independent of his ownership of the team, but his leadership of the team was despicable. I learned a couple of years ago that Mussina left the team because of how Angelos treated BJ Surhoff (trading him to the Braves while he and his wife were trying to get one of their kids treatment at Johns Hopkins, apparently "in part out of spite after petty tiffs with a member of ownership"); no reference for this one, but I'm also under the impression that he single-handedly held up DC getting a team, which finally arrived a couple years after I left the area... combined with screwing the Nats over with the MASN deal and then letting the whole thing get tied up in court or whatever. On top of that, they have this Trumpian disdain for the media, blatantly lying to local journalists and then acting all indignant when they get called out on it. Ugh, what a blemish on a great organization.

He tried his best in 04/05.

And even before that he did everything he could to stop a team moving. Plus the Nats are still in court with this whole MASN thing. I'm hoping the new owners extend a olive branch and settle it once and for all.

I will say my Dad did mention that in the early 90s they couldn't find a person to invest in baseball. Did some googling and sure enough:

It sounds like he held up the move from Montreal by a year or two, so maybe I'm conflating that with Tampa & Phoenix getting chosen for the '98 expansion when DC (or maybe Northern VA?) was also in the running? He did plenty of shitty stuff as an owner, I guess I don't need to hold grudges for made-up grievances as well :)

Looks like NoVa was approved for a team(a dark timeline), but I don't know what happened. I'll have to look around.

PROPOSED SITES FOR BASEBALL STADIUM

1. South of the Dulles Toll Road, east of Horse Pen Road, south of Fox Mill Road. 164 acres.

2. East of Route 28, south of Horse Pen Road, north of Frying Pan Road. 90 acres.

3. North of the Fairfax Government Center, south of I-66, south of Random Hills Road. 106 acres.

4. Eastern part of Fort Belvoir Engineer Proving Ground, west of I-95, north of future Fairfax County Parkway. 25 acres.

5. East of Route 7, south of the Dulles Airport Access/Toll Road, north and south of Tyco Road, north of Spring Hill Road. 80 acres

* In Loudoun County, an area has been identified west of Dulles International Airport, south of the planned extension of the Dulles Toll Road and east of Route 659.

From that article (emphasis mine)

If expansion is approved by at least 21 of the 28 major league team owners, baseball probably will add two clubs in 1997 or 1998, and another pair two or three years later. For now, only four areas -- Northern Virginia, Phoenix, Tampa-St. Petersburg, Fla., and Orlando, Fla. -- are in the running for teams, but baseball officials said that other cities likely will be added as candidates following the first round of expansion.

The '98 expansion to 30 teams happened, but we didn't get up to 32 in 2000 / 2001 :( I definitely wish we lived in the timeline that had baseball in DC and Orlando 20+ years ago, though I wonder what would have happened to the Expos. Maybe they'd be in Portland now?

edit: was this around the time there was talk about the Twins folding? Maybe 2001 would have been "new teams in DC and Orlando, and no more teams in Montreal or Minnesota" rather than increasing the size of the league?

Maybe that's when Angelos threw a shit fit, then 9/11 and the recession hit and just made it harder to get a team in NoVa. I do know it was close in '04 about where the team was gonna end up.

I will say, as a DC resident at the time I was 100% against the city paying for the stadium. Don't get me wrong, I love that we got the team and not NoVa but having to pay for a stadium when a billionaire can afford it just rubs me the wrong way.

The O's picked up Corbin Burnes in his last year before free agency for a couple of prospects (and Milwaukee gets a Competitive Balance draft pick):

View: https://twitter.com/Feinsand/status/1753228148227850360

I think this has the potential to be a good deal for both teams -- Mliwaukee gets a young reliever who will probably get converted to a starter and an infielder who is kind of blocked by other young talent in Baltimore, while Baltimore gets a top starter for a year coming off a 100+ win season where an ace gives them a chance at repeating their run to the playoffs and hopefully also do better than getting swept in the first round.

Expect my tune to change if Burnes gets hurt or the O's revert back to their usual "fight to stay out of the cellar" selves... though I have a glimmer of hope that last year wasn't a fluke and the latter is unlikely.

I mean, he's only 23. I don't have an issue with it honestly. And the Royals have the option to the last 3 years so they can cut their losses if he isn't worth it then. And if he continues to play really well? This could be a steal for the Royals.

Of course it's a lot to bank on but you gotta take that chance. As opposed to having your stars walk or get traded. If Abrams/Gore/Gray take a step forward this year I'd love to see the Nats extend them.
