Since the old thread was struck down, let's do this.

Don't talk about where to get stuff illegally. Places like CrunchyRoll, Hulu, etc - those are legal. Grabbing a manga at your local B&N is cool. Places like ******** and ****** and ********* and ******* are not. Basically, if it has torrents or scans, speak not of it. Naming specific fansub groups seems(?) to be verboten as well. Could we get clarification on this as treatment's mention of "groups" in the lockpost isn't completely clear? No clarification, no problem.

Also, dubs are the debil and 4:3 is a relic.

Lucifer & Biscuit Hammer is a great manga with a hilariously bad name.

While on the topic of manga:

Liar Game is also EXCELLENT, Full Metal Alchemist had an excellent ending, and Mirai Nikki will be ending in the next 6 months or so (iirc MK is monthly instead of weekly)

EDIT:

Naming specific fansub groups seems(?) to be verboten as well.

I never understood this in the previous thread. I mean, we have a no warez policy in gesc, sure. But it's not as if we ban mention of all the warez groups - Deviation Et. Al. It just strikes me as kinda silly I suppose. Everyone who is anyone already knows who the fansubbers are, so why the extra prohibition?

=Love= Liar Game. It can truly spin your head around in confusion (in a good way). The introductory mini-arc isn't at all representative of the series, for anyone checking it out. It's pretty much like the tutorial level of a video game, and the following levels (Rounds of the Liar Game) become increasingly more complex and the strategies used to play/win increasingly more inventive and enjoyable. Unfortunately I'm now experiencing the mini-frustration that always happens when you catch up to the Japanese releases and suddenly you can't read in 10 chapter spurts anymore.

Just in case anyone here has been living under a rock, I'll restate the obvious.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is awesome anime. It is not japanese and therefore is missing some of the things your typical anime enthusiast has come to expect. For example, it is missing:
* gratuitous use of girls with humongous boobs
* the dilemma of choosing between an english-language version with horrible voice acting, the "official" subtitled edition, and a myriad of fansubs with various strengths and weeknesses

It has really good voice acting, an epic arching storyline, humor, and a touch of romance.

I'm not sure. Do the fansubbers sites directly link to download sites? Do the WAREZ groups link to DL sites?

If people had a thread that was always mentioning what WAREZ groups had just cracked, would this become an issue? "Hey The Disreputable Boyz have a cracked edition of Mario Sheep Shearing 28, out now!" and "The Disreputable Boyz cracks are way better than those done by the Shifty Grifters, those guys add back doors and viruses!" seems like that would get a boot on its neck.

I couldn't name a fan sub group as I still view it as infringement and so there is no point. On the other hand I look at FS torrents as a potentially valuable tool for companies trying to figure out what to bring to the US.
In the end this dilemma is settled for me by my hate of subtitles (they distract from the art and my eyes do not track perfectly so I read very slowly.. Yes, I know there are exercises that will fix this but I'm not doing them).

I also cannot show FS in the anime room at the local convention so there is no point in them for that either. Always nice when we get a new person who says "Next year we should show these fansubs!!!".
I'm the anime fan that has thousands of DVDs not thousands of Gig of downloads.

I don't know, but "Ouran Host Club" seems to be really big. I was blindsided by this at AMA a few weekends ago. All anyone had to say onstage was "Host Club" and the girls went crazy with the screaming. It didn't help we had TWO of the voice actors, both hams, as guests. I felt completely left out, but luckily, my wife found it on TV. Not bad. A little... creepy, but kinda fun.

While I view Dub's because of specific reasons, I will join in with my hate of 4:3.

What's worse is anime originally shown in 16:9, being cropped to 4:3 then dubbed. ugh.

I'm currently watching Ranma 1/2 for the third time I believe, lulz as usually.

Also it's not really anime, but Red vs Blue is awesome.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya has a second season I think, though it's not dubbed yet, boo.

Also since the OP mentioned it, how's Crunchy Roll, Bleach is over there now too it would appear. Thoughts?

I don't like streaming, personally. I've heard they do a decent job, but part of what I like is drawing style, and I don't trust that streaming's quite good enough to not muddy the artwork.

Haruhi season 2 is basically Season 1 in chronological order, plus Endless Eight, plus a couple other episodes. You are not missing much, sadly. :(

Do the fansubbers sites directly link to download sites? Do the WAREZ groups link to DL sites?

They treat it differently, I suppose? The direct answer is "Yes, fansubbers directly link to torrents". "No, you're not likely to find a warez group have a site at all". But that's mostly because fansubbers are WAY more brazen about what they do whereas in contrast game warez is much more underground. A statement like "you can find xx game on so and so newsgroup" would be more toward the more verboten. But if someone made a post in GESC that just happened to mention a warez group out of notation - for example, if they're having a conversation about DRM and the statment "Well, Deviation cracked the game in 3 days..." would be totally fine. Likewise, I'd like the kind of situational freedom to say "Dattebayo dropped Bleach because Crunchyroll acquired the rights" to be in-bounds if only because the intent of the statement has nothing to do with Copyright Infringement.

Incidentally, that statement is true (DB dropping bleach).

Also since the OP mentioned it, how's Crunchy Roll, Bleach is over there now too it would appear. Thoughts?

Probably the best shot that Anime has in R1 to be honest. It's basically taking the first major and legitimate complaint about Anime availability in R1 and solving it - that being that before CR, you had to hope the series you wanted was licensed and then wait for the DVDs to come out and goodness knows that took forever. CR solves this by translating and getting it out to you either the same day or the next day off the top of my head. Which is fucking awesome. Looking at their listing, it's actually smaller than I thought it was, but that's something that grows when CR grows. $7/mo is a little steep for the listing they have AT THIS POINT, but if they continue to grow the roster - and yes, I realize this is a chicken/egg problem - I wouldn't mind paying.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya has a second season I think,

Oh fuck no. I'm going to save you money. Don't watch it. Skip it for Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, if and when they decide to cash in some more on the Haruhi money train.

Well, the Lounge is an indexed forum. If people are talking about warez and such too much, it'll drive a lot of people out of the thread, official policy or not.

What? Again, I'm not talking about HAY GUYS GO HERE -><- for your anime fansubs. I'm totally cool with a prohibition of the site that everyone ends up going to anyway. IIRC TFR mentioned some random fansubber drama which got the last thread locked (OH GOD THE DRAMA that goes on is fucking hilarious). I think that should be mostly ok.

I'm the anime fan that has thousands of DVDs not thousands of Gig of downloads.

I am definitely on the way to this, except with manga. When MK finishes and finishes getting released in R1 (They already have volume 1 out in the US) I'm probably going to buy it as a batch. Already have Genshiken :V

Angel Beats! just finished up yesterday. For those who aren't aware of its pedigree: it's a Key show. As in, created by the same dudes who wrote Kanon, Air, and Clannad.

If you know Key, you know what to expect. Comedy, drama, and tragic romance. It delivers, even though it stumbles near the end. This gives credence to my new theory for Key productions - they need long shows in order to bring their full potential out. Kanon (2002) was very rough, and Air absolutely sucked in terms of pacing. However, you get to Kanon (2006) and you find a much better paced show. Then you reach Clannad and AfterStory, where pretty much the entire first season and a third of the second are all build up to make you care about the characters. Angel Beats! is the best of their shorter shows so far, but it could have been better with more buildup.

One of these days, Key is going to actually put together a full length series with a storyline that doesn't have a "what the fuck?" moment, and the world will be doomed.

For the record: AnimeSuki has been allowed to exist for YEARS AND YEARS providing download links to torrents and a forum where fansubbing is openly discussed because the rule there is simple - once an anime has been licensed for distribution outside of Japan, all talk about where to download it stops and all torrent listings are removed. Violations are enforced by bans. This really should be the policy here, because it's stupid that the old thread got locked because a few fansubbing groups got mentioned by name. This is doubly so because the vast, vast majority of animes are never officially licensed ever and so fansubs are the only way you'll ever see them.

Anyways, Highschool of the Dead is fucking batshit awesome. That is all.

Liar Game is also EXCELLENT
It's too bad the TV show was so bad.

Also, ++ to allowing fansubs for noncommercial anime/manga.

I just watched Baccano, and I really liked it. The nonlinear storyline was neat, the overall story was neat, I kinda wish they hadn't gone crazy with some of the "super powers" of the characters, the immortality was enough, but that's my only complaint.

I loved Baccano even with the gratuitous abilities of the characters. I saw it as similar to how you get the bullet time stuff in a John Woo movie or whatever: unrealistic but fun and stylish. It's basically exaggeration for effect. Great series.

I just finished watching Cross Game this weekend and pretty much the same as everyone else who has mentioned it; I loved it despite having pretty much zero interest in baseball at all. In fact, I would say that this series is the only time I have been able to even stomach watching baseball on TV and it made it enjoyable, dramatic and interesting. Best part about it: turns out the show isn't really about baseball at all. :D

The first episode of Cross Game numbers amongst the best episode of anime I've ever seen. And it's probably in my top 10 best episodes of TV I've ever seen.

No no no, you have to realize, in the live drama the main character is Fukunaga. From this, everything else drops in to place :V

Re: Licensing:

I still find it hilariously obnoxious that Bakemonogatari has not yet been licensed for R1.

Just finished watching the first 3 episodes of High School of the Dead. So far I'm digging it. Have to see what the future holds for it.

The show was so badass I couldn't help myself and read a manga for the first time in my life. I ended up finishing the manga up to the current end point (chapter 26) in 2 days. Shit gets fucking REAL later on. :eyebrow:

So when is the ETA on a US release with both sub and dub?

Looks like the manga scanlation scene is getting wrecked. A lot of the big ones are going down. If they'd license more out over here with decent translations, that'd be nice, but I suspect nothing of the sort will happen.

I've wondered many times what sort of costs are involved in licensing. LIke, for example, could a scanlation group feasibly license a title through donations and release it free?

Or are we talking like $100,000 for a crappy title?

I do not acknowledge the existence of dubbed anime, so who cares. It's available now at The Anime Network as a streaming simulcast with the airings in Japan, though you have to be a subscriber and it's subbed. Otherwise you know how else you can watch it right now.

Did I mention how awesome the OP and EDs (there's a different ED for each episode!) are for this show? Apparently they found some indie J-Rock bands for this show and they did a fantastic job with the music.

So you are native level fluent. I'm jealous as I cannot learn languages.

You're kidding, right? You think that you need to learn a language to watch foreign media? Do you ever watch foreign films? Please tell me you don't watch foreign films dubbed. You ever see Amelie? That movie is pretty good in it's original French and it stars the girl who later appears alongside Tom Hanks in The DaVinci Code. I watched "Let the Right One In" in it's original Swedish with subtitles. I've watched some Korean horror movies in the original Korean with subtitles, notably "Thirst". (Thirst is a fun little vampire flick, but LTROI is an absolutely fantastic vampire movie which everyone must see.) I still sometimes watch old Hong Kong action movies with the original Cantonese language tracks since they didn't really dub those into Mandarin much. Many of John Woo's old movies were made only in Cantonese. I can understand Mandarin just fine but don't understand a word of Cantonese. I can only speak English fluently and my native Mandarin Chinese semi-brokenly. I don't speak any Japanese but like all longtime anime watchers I've picked up stray words and phrases here and there just from near-constant exposure.

It's more likely some fee + a portion of profits - giving it out for free would never fly :)
