24 races this year, so it's going to be pretty busy. Excited to see what upgrades and changes the teams bring to counter Red Bull, and what RB does to respond.

I think McLaren is going to bring it hard to RB/Ferrari/Mercedes this year and we're going to see some great battles at the top.

Any predictions? Another year of Max and RB domination? Is Checo safe if he has another year like 2023? How will Ricciardo's full year with AlphaTauri go? Who finishes higher in points, Albon or Sargeant? And what are the broadcasters going to call Alfa this year?

Looking forward to another great season and Ars thread!

Papayaing. And mainly just hoping for some competition for Max.

February is not far off at all!
What They Said - Only.png

I have some additional wants, but Technarch does a great summary.

I want more James Vowles videos and interviews.
I want more seat drama towards the end of the year as all those contracts come due.
I want Williams to move up a spot.
I want Lewis to win a race.
And Lando.
And Alonso.
I want news about Audi. And Andretti.
I want more Bernie Collins.
I want to see cool one-off liveries.
I want Bottas to go full handlebar with his mustache.
I want Checo to do something. Positive or negative, just meaningful.
I want more F1 Academy viewing opportunities.

And more besides, but mostly? I want some competition at the front. Max can still win pretty much everything, but I want it to be close.

I hadn't looked at the schedule. We end with a three week break followed by a triple header? Interesting.

My feeling is that McLaren will be the first to beat Red Bull, but Mercedes or Ferrari are probably an equally safe bet. And it could be any of those six drivers, really. What a great group.

I expect the gap to come down, but will not be surprised at all if Max wins 75% or more of the races. Hopefully I'll be wrong about that, but I'm not getting my hopes too high.

I hope McLaren are the first to beat red bull, that would be amazing. I actually think Ferrari will throw rien this year, and I'm completely ok with that. Anyone challenging red bull will be great.

Ok, time for 5 absurd predictions for 2024:
  1. Albon wins a race (maybe a super wet one, maybe Montréal)
  2. Tsunoda has fixed his focus and attitude problems and gets off to an amazing start to the year.
  3. Seeing this season following a similar trend to the last, Perez quits before the summer break and is replaced by Tsunoda.
  4. The first 5 races are won by 5 different drivers.
  5. Toto Wolff says something nice about Christian Horner.

If Perez puts in a poor showing I don't think RBR will take much convincing to bounce his ass.

Also, it seems like there's only a week between pre-season testing and Bahrian, which will make the opening few rounds interesting depending car development wise.

Yeah, I had to think about this one. But with the idea being that the predictions were supposed to be absurd I specifically phrased it that Perez would quit rather than be pushed. I don't think it's likely, but it would be fun.

I think it's even money whether he ends the year in the same seat or not.

Same as the previous two years.

2023 was the week before in Bahrain.
2022 was the week before in Bahrain, with Barcelona a few weeks before that.

But yeah, the previous two seasons to this upcoming one? Final (or only!) testing was the week before.

Do you think (if he does move) that he would go to AlphaTauri and replace Sargeant? Or perhaps be dropped entirely and replace Magnussen or Hulkenberg?

I'd like to see him replace Stroll and then we can have both the old-timers rocking out in the Aston and kicking ass.

EDIT: I'm dumb. Sargeant drives for Williams, not AT.

I still think people are too hard on Perez. Not that he doesn't deserve some harsh criticism for his near collapse in the middle third of this season, but he still finished second in the championship and has been the closest teammate to Max since Ricciardo. So, since Max was a teenager paired with a multiple race winner with several years in F1.

I read an interview with Albon a while ago about how terrible it is to be Max's teammate. You start off the year thinking you're pretty close in performance and then the engineers start tuning the car towards the extreme front end bite that Max wants. Then you find yourself needing to choose between a car you don't feel like you can control or one that's not set up as intended, which will never let you be anywhere near as fast as Max, no matter how good you are.

I don't know if there are any drivers who can cope with a car that's as twitchy as Max likes it. A younger Hamilton or Alonso, maybe. Norris? I don't know. I think a lot of them prefer a tiny bit of understeer, so they can push without having the car decide it wants to be the other way around all of a sudden.

That said, I think Perez would have to put in his greatest season ever if he's going to get re-signed for 2025. That seat is either Daniel's or Yuki's.

He talks about it here. It's a excerpt from a longer (80-minute) interview on the same channel. I haven't given the feature-length video a look yet.

I love Gary Anderson articles. I get to the end of one of his technical explainers and think, "Yeah, I get that! That makes sense!"

Today's example?

Season hasn't even started yet and they're already writing the "who's still driving in 2025?" articles!

Maybe let's focus on the upcoming season first?

Slow news day.
Everyone is waiting on shakedowns, reveals, testing, and the Drive To Survive trailer.
Which, this year, I don’t think I’m going out of my way to watch. If I want to know what happened last year, I’ll watch the Race in 30mfor each race instead.
If you've been watching DTS for race recaps then I imagine you've been sorely disappointed.

Yeah, I've kind of fallen off the DtS train. It got less interesting in later seasons and F1 proper got longer with sprints and then shootouts, so at some point I just wanted that free time back and it was the least essential bit of my following F1.

That said, we're in a bit of a lull for interesting post-dinner TV right now so if they drop a new season I could see watching a few episodes and seeing if it sparks any interest. I think the wife will be like "eh, I don't care, it's just Verstappen winning every race," though. She definitely is more on the "if there's no contest for first, it's not interesting" side of the fence, whereas I'm like "but the Formula 1.1 where Red Bull just doesn't exist is amazing!"

I like DtS for the behind the scenes stuff, it tends to show quite a bit of the stuff that happens beyond the grid and for me thats interesting, the "stories" I kinda take in stride since the veracity of those is often questionable but seeing how drivers train both physically and mentally is something I'm curious about, for instance.

We'll see what the next iteration brings, though, the criticisms by some of the drivers seems to have landed so perhaps it'll be more true to life.

Gunter is out at Haas
As well as the technical director Simone Resta. Team performance has been so bad, it's no surprise really. But you'd expect this sort of call to happen earlier so that new people can have a little more influence on developing the next car. But really, I don't expect much in the way of improvement while Gene Haas is running it.

Now Guenther and Mattia can go make their Italian travelogue show, at least.
I would subscribe to the streaming service that hosts this.

Having only watched a couple episodes of DtS, I haven't gotten to see too much of the Guenther show. I did see the one where he goes hiking (or was that some other show?) in the alps (?) and I get his popularity based on that alone. He's also been a great interview whenever Sky or F1TV have had a reason to sit him down. So I hope he pops up somewhere else.

Has Audi named any leadership?
