...that everyone else saw years ago.

I haven't had "real" cable TV in a couple of decades, but this Christmas I added nexflix streaming to my media world. As a result I am speed-watching a bunch of stuff that isn't even close to current and I am looking for a self-serving place to post random stupid stuff.

Blowing through seasons in a short time frame really makes for a time-lapse-photo opportunity to recognize some oddities that might escape your attention if they were stretched out over a real viewing season.

I'll open with a couple:

Farscape. I watched all 88 episodes in order in under three weeks. I liked it, but I came away with the impression that every single character on it has a number of scenes that include a close-up, normally in half-profile, of a single tear coursing down their cheek. Honest, the crew filming it must have had short-hand for that take. There were few episodes without at least one, and there were more than a few episodes with several. Hell I wonder what the record number per episode would even be, probably half a dozen or more.

I said in another thread that it was like watching David Caruso taking off his sunglasses and tilting his head. They only had one move, and they used the living shit out of it.

The new BSG. I went through the first season and I am starting on the second. As with many of this genre, Farscape included, they seem to destroy more ships (Vipers and Raptors) than they could possibly be carrying. They blew up two Raptors in the season one finale alone. There is suspension of disbelief, which I will grant any show gobs of, then there is just plain old bad at math...and that bothers me.

But what really annoys me (so far) is this: Ok, so if Adama really believes that there are only 12 varieties of Cylons why doesn't somebody just take pictures of the 50k people, and visually scan for twins. Even if he doesn't believe, why not do it anyway. Once they posted the pictures of #2 and #5 it becomes painfully obvious that any twins are likely bad. WHY CAN'T THEY SEE THAT!!!

Remember that every time something Cliche' happens you must take a drink. Wise admiral is wise, take a drink. Gruff Sargent/XO is gruff, take a drink.

Whenever something poorly written/thought out happens, drink 2x.

Yup, I am one and a half episodes into season 2.0. I am currently at the state of having an age-inappropriate thoughts about a large number of naked Boomers.

But don't let that stop you from posting stuff beyond there, I am not the type who gets my entertainment "spoiled". In here, if somebody bitches about a lack of spoiler tags for something that is more than a year old I will kill them...with my mind.

Just past halfway through BSG 2.5, and it seems to be going back and forth for me. Some of the episodes are mindblowingly phenomenal, but others are...definitely not. I guess it comes with the territory, you need some kind of filler, but I'd almost prefer it if series went into it knowing "ok, we're going to tell this story, in this many episodes" and stick to that.

That's not how the TV series industry works though, I suppose, and if you did that it'd just be called a miniseries anyway...

Ron Moore would agree with you. It is interesting to listen to some of the podcasts and hear why some of the episodes ended up the way they did. I was pleased to see that some of the ones I felt were weak (the black market and boxing episodes for example) were ones that he also felt were weak or presented particular production difficulties.

I've torn through Season 1 of The League and both of Party Down in pretty rapid succession, and this week I've been watching a good bit of 70's Woody Allen, which is interesting and educating enough as a film fan, but not engrossing to make me watch his purportedly lesser 80's-and-beyond works.

Oh, and a lower budget thriller/mild horror movie called Frozen, which was solidly entertaining and certainly worth a view.

LOVE Netflix streaming.

Funny, I just watched the black market one and felt the same way. The whole thing with Lee and the girl (even him being asked to investigate it in the first place) came out of nowhere, and hell, the entire episode's storyline to begin with seemed like it just didn't have anything to do with the continuity of the series.

If you like Dr. Who I would cautiously suggest that you try Torchwood.

By contrast:

They stay basically in one place and all the wierdness comes to them.

It is a bit more adult oriented with bad language, a bit of nudity, and massive doses innuendo.

When the series is over it is really over.
Except that it's not. :p Last I heard Starz and BBC1 are going to be airing season 4 this summer.

I did not know that. Now I will be conflicted. When I finished watching I had enjoyed some/most of what I watched, but I never wanted to see any of those people again.

After watching Children of Earth it would be like a sequel to Titanic: the ship sank, the people died, the few survivors survived...wtf is left to do?

In fact Children of Earth, along with the last couple of episodes of season #2 were a lot like watching a disaster movie. They took the whole series and crashed it right into the ground. I could see what was happening, but I was too horrified to look away.

I agree, but I liked the crash. Seeing main characters die off is interesting to me, it makes the episodes more thrilling when you know one of them could die at any moment.

It will be interesting to see what they do with another season. A mostly new cast opens up possibilities, I hope they can pull it off!

If there is anything you think you can't buy, you can buy it in Romania!

That was a good series--the best IMO were Liberia and South Korea.

Lately I've been watching No Reservations.

Straight-up copied from IMDB there is a synopsis for the first episode:

When C.I.A. agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy, he finds himself unearthing a threat which challenges the entire human race.

The answers seem to lie within an old, secret British institute, known only as Torchwood. But Torchwood was destroyed, years ago, and the keys to the institute are held by its only two survivors - former Police Officer Gwen Cooper, who has long since disappeared along with her husband and child, and the mysterious Captain Jack Harkness, a man whose history seems to stretch back centuries.

With Rex under attack from all sides, in both the US and the UK, he soon discovers there are forces at work within every level of society, determined to stop Torchwood's return. As a chain of events across the world links together the most disparate and unlikely individuals - including a surgeon, a killer, senators and CEOs - a new Torchwood team takes shape. But this time, the threat is much closer to home, as they realize that their greatest enemy is mankind itself...

So they are using the name and possibly Jack and Gwen, to jumpstart a fundamentally new series.

You know, I think I'd rather see a reader's digest version of the life and times of the Face of Boe.

They added large numbers of actual American actors you have heard of, moved much of the filming to the US, and stamped a name on it - Torchwood: Miracle Day. The premise is quite interesting.

Galactica initially carried fourty Vipers (supposedly); these were a mix of Mark VII and Mark II (they had a squadron of Mark II Vipers in the museum). The number of Raptors isn't consistent through the series, but there are probably somewhere around 30.

Also, without getting too spoilerific, something that happens at the end of Season 2.0 that lets them manufacture new Mark VII Vipers to replace Vipers that were destroyed.

The Galactica's hangar deck is quite a bit larger than is depicted on-screen... it runs the entire length of the hangar deck and is somewhere around 660 meters long by 60 meters wide. Plenty of room for lots of ships.

Have you ever tried to scan 50k people for twins? It would have to be done manually; computer power in the fleet is very limited. It would take a really long time and a lot of manpower (and, the more people you add to the project, the more likely it is that someone will try and skew the results).

Obsessed <-- Seriously, the first episode with the buff gay dude and the struggling single mom made me want to cry. They were so earnest, and were struggling so hard to overcome their mental illness. If you're not moved when you see the gay dude breaking down, explaining how he feels all alone, or the single mom crying over the graves of her dead parents, something's wrong with you. I can only watch this series in short doses, because seeing people really suffering is hard to do.

Solitary Confinement <-- this one was an eye opener, to see what really happens to human beings (albeit criminals) in solitary confinement, and how the prison admins say their punishment is solving problems, rather than causing MORE mental illness in people who are already having problems fitting in with society. It helps you understand that whatever you feel about bradley manning, his solitary confinement is a punishment for being a "bad guy", plain and simple. I wouldn't be surprised if he went from a naive but misguided man to a wild eyed, paranoid unabomber by the time they're done with him. By the time he gets up on the stand at trial, he will be a crazy mofo. Solitary confinement will make him that way. It's cabin fever * 1000.
