(previous thread: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=1280983)

Path of Exile, the ARPG with the amazingly enormously dense skill tree, the massive amount of customization, and tons and tons and tons of stuff is launching their newest major expansion tomorrow, The Fall of Oriath.

Here's the big one: PoE is expanding from 4 acts to 10. That's right, 10 acts. The first four acts are the same as always, the fifth is new, and 6-10 are basically re-visiting the prior acts after the major events of Acts 4 and 5. In combination with this, there are no longer difficulties - Cruel and Merciless are gone. One playthrough is all it takes.

Another new system is the Pantheon system, where as you slay gods, you can use a fraction of their power for defensive buffs. One major and one minor Pantheon power can be slotted at a time, and can be changed whenever you're in town. Their powers can also be upgraded.

The new league starting tomorrow is Harbinger - where ethereal beings create enemies and do nasty things to you, are immune to direct damage, but take damage as you kill their guardians. There are also new currency items (which have not really been revealed) and more shards of various orbs. I hope you have a currency stash tab.

If you haven't played in a while, the endgame map progression has been drastically modified as well (the Atlas).

Finally, for the timid, there is a somewhat more robust new player experience.

I've been avoiding PoE for months now so I can jump into 3.0 with a fresh mind. I'm really eager to play again and looking forward to this weekend!

If we have any brand new PoE players joining us this league, can someone comment on the new player experience (the tutorial prompts and the help window)? Getting started has been pretty rough in the past, but it looks like they've put a lot of effort into improving it. Unfortunately, it's really difficult to evaluate that once you're already a veteran.

If you're the sort who makes your own builds, Path of Building is the premier theorycrafting tool. It has an excellent skill tree, but so much more. You can plug in skills, gear, and gems and see what skill damage will look like, lets you easily swap gems and see what effect that has on damage, and such.

Don't forget to relax your eyes, stretch your legs, and stretch your wrists every hour while playing.

I'm probably starting the league with a mind over matter storm burst inquisitor (Path of Building code paste)

If storm burst ends up being crap, I can adapt it to be most any kind of crit caster without too many respec points (grand total of 3 point spent in lightning specific nodes).

edit: oh, magoo beat me to the path of building link, nice collection of links there.

As I'm mentioned in the prior thread, my plan is to go SRS for a league starter as it should still be cheap and even with the nerf, strong enough to get me some currency. I haven't planned out anything else but I have time during the league I'm definitely looking to see what's fast. I would definitely have gone KotF but it's been completely gutted, then that gutted corpse was flayed and then the skin from that was burned and the ashes spread to the four winds.

I may actually try building my own build for this league after slavishly following builds for my first two. With PoB, I'm able to make my mistakes in something that's easily corrected before I commit to gear and time.

I'm gonna have to find a 3.0 RF build... not sure if I'll be able to start right away though.
Pohx made some pretty detailed videos for starting 3.0 with an RF build. It might be a good baseline for you to reference.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGrUqA-Y_ng&t=1271s

The interesting part is that he starts using RF right when he picks it up. It involves some smart gear choices and a willingness to Go Fast and always have pots available, but it gives such a big damage boost at those levels that it's worth the risk.

My inquis SB pastebin looks like this: https://pastebin.com/LDzsiAWf . Very similar builds, i just choose to path closer to VP in case I can get some leech going with Berek's Grip and the Doryani items. I slotted intuitive leap between witch/shadow as well, but I don't remember how expensive that jewel is. I also think Carcass Jack will be a bit cheaper than CoD but I guess we won't know until the league starts.

But atm i'm more inclined towards necro darkpact for the vaal skelly lulz and max block. But since the skill hasn't been finalized yet still no firm build.

Both zerker darkpact and stormburst seem strong too...

Isn't this the final Dark Pact gem info? I think GGG provided this (it showed up on Reddit yesterday).

https://i.redd.it/nfypw277bfdz.jpg

I've been thinking about a self-cast Dark Pact (because skellies suck), but I don't think I'll start the league with it. I'm currently thinking about a Cyclone build since they reworked how it paths and it appears to be a huge quality of life improvement. My fallback is to use Ancestral Warchief instead - the trick is that I'd use different classes/ascendencies for each of those, so I kind of have to pick at the start...

I'm a little disappointed by how strong the Berserker Leech node seems to be. It's so difficult to get spell leech that the 3% available on Zerker is a huge draw. Combined with the option for sustain from warcrys and the huge More Damage node, there's a reasonable argument to use Zerker for just about any build.

Unfortunately no, Mark_GGG posted deeper down in that reddit thread explaining how the skill is still unfinished (as of his posting)
https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/co ... w/dl3cxf3/

The inital reveal of this gem had an incorrect stat description, and non-final balance values. Bex has posted a version with the up-to-date stat description here. We'll also try to update with the latest balance values as soon as we can.

So the skill description of the skill is final, but the actual numbers are not.

Zerker I bet will be super popular this patch in SC but I'd imagine that the 10% increased damage taken will claim a lot of lives in HC. Especially if players conflate the value of instant full leech vs. EHP.

Dark pact is definitely interesting. I feel like it has to be self cast for mapping. Skellies are too clunky. Maybe skellies for boss though.

Since the cost is %based stacking life isn't actually good (contrary to what GGG claimed with the skill reveal). That %based cost makes me think a low-life version of the build might be pretty good. Since stone golem gives flat regen instead of %regen, you can use it to get a pretty large %regen amount in a low life build. Low life builds typically have something like 1.5k max life, so stone golem is around 7% life regen.

Obviously you couldn't reserve all your life like normal LL builds, but a ~30% pool should be plenty to cast from if you've got good regen.

Isn't berserker essentially unchanged?

I guess with assassin getting nerfed into the ground something else needs to become the flavor of the month. Berserker has always been solid, even for casters. Since it is basically the same, it should continue to be solid.

The 10% increased damage taken has never been an overly large problem, hardcore or softcore. Because of the start position, you tend to have more life than other builds anyway, so it balances out. My berserker in breach league had over 7k hp.

I usually extend this offer here, so I'll do it again: if you would like help with a build, be it tweaks, gear suggestions, or identification of probable pain points, just ask me. I'll happily review any build you happen to come up with.

I'm a bit of an alt-aholic in this game and many others. My spreadsheet of current and past builds says that I've played 162 unique builds so far, with another 6-8 planned for this league. I probably play it too much, and definitely think about it too much. Oh well. :)

I think zerker is going to be much more popular this league because with the significant nerfs to ES via both VP and max ES, life & life+MOM will be much more prevalent. The left/bottom side of the tree is just more efficient to stack hps than the right side. Of the 6 left side classes, chieftain(except RF?) and hiero really aren't very popular. Jugg is only melee and has to compete with slayer & zerkers. Inquis is only spell damage.

Zerker is the only left/bottom class that is flexible enough to be played as either a spell or a melee character. I guess Scion could see a resurgence this league but nobody ever plays scion.

Pathfinder was overwhelmingly popular last league but I think a large part of that was due to the power of ES(nerfed) + VP(nerfed) + OP pots(almost all of which have been nerfed) + vaal skills (VFB+Vspark)(nerfed). All those players gotta go somewhere...

I think there is a sizeable number of players who believe that the %health lost as a part of self-casting the spell is added as base damage as well as the more modifier onto the flat part of Darkpact. So self cast would be (health lost + base damage on gem) * (more modifier). Cast onto a skeleton would be (base damage on gem) * (number of chains up to two). Which is why some people are trying to PoB like 10K+health bloodmagic toons.

If the damage of the spell doesn't scale based off of the amount of hps lost, then LL is definately the way to go. If the spell scales off the amount of health lost then having a massive health pool becomes more attractive.

I've been watching the storm burst video some more and I'm having second thoughts about it. Just isn't very clear-speed meta, mechanically. I don't have a good sense of what might happen if you stack a lot of cast speed and faster proj, but I'm starting to think about doing RF instead.

A quick search shows a lot of streamers are planning to do RF builds though, which probably means rise of the phoenix will be expensive early league, and of course kaom's heart is never cheap, but could be quite a bit more spendy than normal.

I think I'm okay with that though. If I go berserker (leaning that way), you can can actually live with not having enough life regen / fire res, because you can just spam your warcry to regen life.

Current plan (PoB paste). With perfect gear it hits 1m RF dps and 10k life. Obviously as a league starter that's not the expected outcome, but should be good enough. No low-life shenanigans or anything so fairly basic to gear up.

I'm a little torn on bandits. 1% life regen from oak isn't really needed, can hit regen targets without that. So it is mostly between 2 passives, and the 6% attack speed and 6% move speed from krayten. Attack and move speed both scale shield charge, so that seems really attractive.

Am I missing something from your posted build? You have both EE and EO but I only see scorching ray and RF as damage sources. Are you planning on orb of frost/storms to trigger? Oak would help you run the 40% less recovery map mod a bit easier, it seems like your have enough regen without oak to easily cover the 20% mod. Kraitlyn would certainly be better if you're planning on just skipping the map mod. It seems like you're doing so much damage that a brightbeak would be a solid choice too instead of the doryani. Or just weapon swap for the boss.

IMO mechanically for storm burst proj speed affects how far each individual ball moves, while cast speed affects the rate at which you dispense balls. Ending the channelling detonates all of the balls that are currently on the map. So increased cast speed would increase the possible overlap of the balls detonations. (so there would be a sweet spot between proj speed/cast speed/AoE effect in order to maximize ball overlap)

Cold or lightning damage on jewelry, and shield charge. That should do it for EE, for EO I'm not really sure if it will be enough. If not, I'll try to find a slot to fit orb of storms, but slots are tight since I intend to run both kaom's heart and kaom's roots.

Swapping my blasphemy ele weakness for vitality would help more for that kind of map. Also because I'm going berserker as I said it isn't really a problem to be degening a little bit, can warcry it back up.

It seems like you're doing so much damage that a brightbeak would be a solid choice too instead of the doryani. Or just weapon swap for the boss.
I actually have a brightbeak set up on weapon swap in that build already. 1m DPS is definitely way more than needed for most trash clearing, so the plan would be to use inc AoE instead of conc, as well as brightbeak, and swap to doryani's for bosses. That said, obviously the damage will be way lower early in the league without all the shiny items.

Yeah this is my assumption as well. But obviously anything you have to stop and channel isn't going to compare to RF for clear speed.

I was really hoping for some more QOL changes to traps and some love for the Saboteur. My go-to build the last few leagues has been an Arc Trapper. The changes to Shock might be nice, but won't affect the idea much at all.

I wonder if we're going to see some interesting builds out of the Scion now, with Ascendant getting some nice buffs.

I just started playing this a week ago and I am having a lot of fun. I tried it years ago but other games took my time. And it looks like I came back at the right time too with this expansion. Currently have a level 24 Marauder. I plan on throwing some money at this game, what does everyone recommend? I am thinking buying more stash tabs, but not sure which ones I am going to need in the next month or so. I see divination tabs, but I don't think I have come across any of these cards (or are they something from the new expansion?). Help a nuub out :scared:

If you are looking to maximize value you want to buy
1 currency tab
either a premium stash tab set or a quad stash tab. - quad stash tab holds the same amount of stuff as 4 stash tabs, but is just one gigantic tab.
If you are crazy organized you can just buy regular stash tabs to hold volume stuff, but once you get past a certain number of tabs its really worthwhile to be able to label them.

Bare minimum you want 1 currency tab because it makes your life so much easier, and at least 1 premium tab(which allows you to sell your stuff on poe.trade).

Div tab is for divination cards, of which you can read about here: https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Divination_card
Buying the tab will organize them for you, and give you some nice graphical options if you actually want to look at the artwork of the cards. If you're looking at pure value though, its pretty meh.

So pretty much you want to spend at least $10.00 which would get you
1 currency tab 75 coins
1 normal to premium tab convert 15 coins
10 coins leftover

But reasonably speaking you probably want to spend at least $20.00 which would get you
1 currency tab 75 coins
1 quad tab 150 coins
(GGG is for sure going to run a stash tab sale next weekend. It was supposed to be this weekend but they postponed it. Generally the stash tab sale is once a month for a weekend, and everything is ~15-20% off.) Bad for you :(

If you want to pony up $30.00 then you may want to consider getting a supporter pack.
The base $30.00 pack gets you $25.00 worth of shop coins and a bunch of knickknacks. Anything past $30.00 will just get you bigger supporter packs, more supporter packs, more tabs, pets, alternate 3D art, alternate skill effects.

The number of tabs you need depends on your playstyle. If you are a hoarder, or love to save stuff for alts, you may need more tabs. If you play a lot, having more tabs will certainly make you both more efficient and will help you increase your ingame wealth. If you plan on getting to maps (character level 70+) then you will certainly need a few tabs just to store the maps.

FWIW I use:
1 currency tab
3 tabs for maps
1 tab for jewellry (for chaos/regal recipe)
1 tab for essence/div cards
1 tab per character I'm either playing or planning to play(to hold alternate gear)
3 tabs to sell junk on poe.trade
1 tab for jewels
1 tab for gems
1 quad tab for junk uniques (b/c i have a hard time not picking them up or vendoring them)
1 tab for pots. (either Q pots i'm using for recipe, or just spares)
1 tab for nooblevelling gear
2 tabs leaguestones (the last league)

But I'm not very organized and I have a poor filter for junking garbage. YMMV.

Did you see Ziggy and Ziz's video? Ziggy created a miner that literally clears whole screens with conc effect slotted. He hasn't posted a build guide but it looks pretty cheap. And they also highlighted another build by Windz that used magma orb (seriously) that just wrecked single target and had decent clear speed.

@Buxaroo, if you can wait until next weekend, there will be a stash sale where you can get the currency tab, the essence tab and the div tab in a bundle with a nice discount. They were planning a stash sale this weekend but pushed it off due to 3.0 launch.

Zerker is the only left/bottom class that is flexible enough to be played as either a spell or a melee character. I guess Scion could see a resurgence this league but nobody ever plays scion.

Obviously it remains to be seen but with the changes to scion ascendance nodes + the great location, I wouldn't be surprised to see a resurgence this league.

Edit: Ziggy posted his glacial cascade miner guide, edited in the link.

I'd take a look at a cast while channeling scorching ray + firestorm build. There's a bunch of physical marauder sunder build that mechanically is pretty ranged as well and is really strong. I'm pretty noobish myself, so I leave it to the experts to recommend anything else. Some of the streamers have been talking about building around the Doomfletch unique bow but I haven't looked into the builds too closely.

Reinstalled the client from backups today and it's sitting waiting to start updating once the patch hits (via steam).

I've not played for at least the last 2 or 3 leagues (shaper, atlas, essences, etc are all stuff I've never done). I think the last league I played was the first time the lab was introduced.

Looking forward to playing and experience all the new content.

Undecided on build yet, but I'm going to start SSF this time around. The need to trade/organize/sort gear etc always is what burns me out, so I'll start without that temptation. I can always convert the character over if I feel the need to start engaging in the economy more.

There was a few threads on reddit with some good starter builds, one of them is a mine/saboteur build which looks interesting, and an RF totem build which might be fun. I'd like to try something that I've not before, and totems/mines are things I've never built around.

Straight up scorching ray as your damage ability (trickster) isn't looking too bad this league, either.

Was able to logon and play for about 30 minutes on the D.C. server, and I got disconnected with a operation timed out error. Can't logon to the server now. Must be all of the east coasters getting off of work and trying to logon

UPDATE: can't even connect to the logon server now, and can't connect to any of the other servers as well. Oh well, patch day :/

Got to the start of act 8 last night (level 56) with the righteous fire berserker. Probably could have done a lot more if not for the server issues, and also I was playing with a friend who's never played before so went at a slower pace.

The 'zerkr RF build is definitely solid. I switched to RF right away at level 32 after finishing normal lab. It was a little rough at first, had to constantly drink life potions to maintain RF. Once I got stone golem at 34 to help with the life regen though it started to be pretty nice. Honestly for non-twink leveling it is one of the stronger builds I've done. Slow 'till you do normal lab, but then quite strong and fast after. Doesn't compare to like pre-AoE-nerf essence drain, but I don't think anything does.

As predicted rise of the phoenix is pretty expensive (45 chaos) right now, so I think I'll do saffell's frame for a while for the 4% max resist. They're only 1c.

I just finished Act 10 (~15 hours played) with a Cyclone Slayer. Leveling was also pretty smooth once I got cyclone going. I was surprised by how much I hated Sunder. I absolutely love being able to buy almost any gem directly. That is a huge quality of life win.

I'm having a really hard time keeping my resists in check. I'm holding onto my SSF status, but my rings are both awful for mapping. I'll probably convert over to buy some basic early end-game gear soon.

I have a late-game boss complaint, so I'm going to put it in a spoiler.
Mostly, I love the new boss encounters. The Eclipse fight gave me a really hard time, but felt fair. Act10 Kitava felt like total bullshit. You fight on a tiny platform and he covers it with several different colors of sweeping area damage. His attacks are hard to read and it's extremely cluttered. I like the idea of having two allies up fighting with you, but they made things even tougher visually. It was also particularly hard to be sure I was in melee range of Kitava. I think I beat him in 4 deaths, but it didn't feel fair or particularly fun.

Robo, I'm surprised you hated sunder too. I used it on a few characters now and I found it really smooth for leveling. It's not great for single target, but it suffices and it's excellent at clearing packs.

I didn't get a chance to play until tonight. I'm pretty glad I missed the server crash shenanigans; I almost took off early from work to play and I'm glad I didn't. SRS witch is going pretty well so far but with only about 2 hours in, I'm desperate for links. Starting act 3, I just got my first 4 link but the colors aren't great on it. It's evas/int hybrid based with 2b,1g,1r and I really only need b/r. I'll have to decide if I want to take the risk recoloring or just hope I get another one better colored soon.

This is what the new currency Orb of Binding is for. You might not have a whole one yet, but if you pick the base type of the item you put it on correctly coloring is easy.
