Warframe: Jade Shadows

I got into the Warframe closed beta recently and I've been enjoying it immensely. From the sounds of the Random Gaming Thoughts thread, a lot of you have, too. Well, the NDA was lifted recently, so now we're free to talk about everything that's been released to the client so far.

Since a 30 minute video at 60 fps is worth roughly 108,000,000 words depending on how consistent the framerate is, here's a simple rundown of the game basics from TotalBiscuit. He misses a couple things, but it's a good overview of how the game generally plays. If you're behind a firewall, the game is a free to play third person action shooter with four player co-op, more of a melee/mobility/superpower focus, and no sticky cover system.

While I know there's a lot of planned content that hasn't been implemented yet, I think this game presents a great argument for solid mechanics being able to carry a game above all else. Level variety is currently limited and the story is bare-bones, yet I'm still compelled to play because it's just so much fun. The combat is fluid and challenging enough that all other complaints fall to the wayside in favor of being a bad motherfucker. Unique enemies require a change in strategy and focus fire to take down efficiently. Objectives and environmental obstructions can change and help mix up the flow as you play through each level. Get a couple friends together and you'll end up wondering where your night went before you know it.

It's not above some of the usual F2P transgressions. They do equipment right - every weapon and warframe is obtainable without paying a dime, but it'll require a significant time investment to get the big stuff without paying. Warframes require their schematics to be found or bought first. They require 3 specific parts to be built. Each part must be crafted from randomly dropped schematics that each require 3 rare components. It's a significant time sink due in no small part to the randomness of drops. You'll be farming a lot unless you cough up a few bucks.

All in all, though, it's a very promising game. It offers engaging co-op reminiscent of Mass Effect 3's multiplayer mode for free, minus the everything button and plus a significant amount of freedom both in mobility and mission structure. The devs are active with the community and adjust gameplay based on reasonable feedback. I can't wait to see what they've got in store to add before release. If you love co-op, you should get in on this action as soon as you can.

If you ended up becoming a master or grandmaster founder, be sure to drop by the development discussion section of the Warframe forums and vote on stuff. They're only letting us decide fairly trivial things at the moment, but seeing what new material is coming down the pipe before it's available is still cool.

Completely deprecated stuff:
Current Arsian Robo Samurai Space Ship Invader List is located here. Use the referral link roulette at the top to get some free stuff when you create a new account!

If you create an account using one of the referral links, you'll get a 7 day credit and XP booster (each of which double your gains). It'll make that early slog through the boring starter weapons go a lot quicker.

Also it gives us old players kickbacks in the form of free inventory slots and stuff, but we're totally doing it just to help newbies with purely altruistic goals.

...and if you're a clan member and are looking for prime parts, look no further than the Stockpile Prime! Thanks randolph.wang!

I have been playing the bejeezus out of this lately. It's simple but fun. The weapons array seems simple, but there's enough variety and customization available to make things much more interesting. It's definitely got the loot thing going for it - finding rare mods can turn guns from tame to amazing. For example, my Boar auto-shotgun was ok at first, but once I got it to rank 30, I dropped some top-end mods into it: a 75% increased reload speed, 32% fire rate, 25% freeze damage - I can empty a full clip of 24 rounds in about 2 seconds and reload it in 1. People on TS: "what the fuck was that?"

Also the Bolto is just hilarious when you get to pin enemies to walls.

I've been playing this nearly as much as Squrf. It is, as he said, really simple. To the point of being repetitive. But somehow, it's addictively fun. I guess because every time you run a mission, even though it's the same damned environment every time, you're always leveling something, one of your guns, your melee, or your warframe. Even though I am close to maxing my main rifle and my warframe, it's still rare that I don't level SOMETHING on a run. Really feels like you're accomplishing something, despite it being nearly mindless grinding.

Chubbseh is my in game name.

I'm enjoying this as well. I think I'm lower level than Squrf/Junon/etc., but it's open to a wide range of levels. There are 'zones' for each level type. I think you can play any of them provided you have them unlocked, but some you will be less effective on [for example, don't go to Pluto as a level 5, as it's recommended for 35-50].

I enjoy fighting the Infected most, as I prefer a melee fight, and they're more melee-oriented. Also, there are a lot of them, which makes chainsawing through them fun.

I'm "dash0" in-game.

Edit: Shameless plug, but I wrote much of the Wiki for this. It's still a WIP, obviously, as I don't have a lot of the data for later systems, or drop rates, or other details, but much of what is there is what I put in there. Mostly I've been maintaining and cleaning things that other people have put in.

The mini-challenge that you need to complete to become level 1 is ridiculously easy. It's like "kill these 6 guys in under a minute". I think I had something like 44 seconds remaining when I was done. I presume they're going to get more difficult, but that one was a lot easier than I was expecting.

A lot of the stuff is pretty imbalanced right now (the Venus and Earth bosses are ridiculously hard in comparison to basically everything else; the Pluto boss died in about 10 seconds). Much of the game isn't terribly challenging either, but even at max ranked frame you can be taken down quickly if you're not careful.

My opinions of the bosses I've fought so far:
Mercury - Captain Vor - Easy. He is level 4 or something though.
Venus - Jackal - Hard/tough. He just has ridiculous amounts of health. Probably not viable solo. Best with a full group.
Earth - Councilor Van Dek [however it's spelled] - Not too bad. Probably does need a full group, though.
Mars - Sgt. Nef Anyo - Only done this once, and it was a breeze. We had a full group of higher-levels though, so that may contribute.
Jupiter - Golem - Easy. He basically stands there exuding his poison aura. Couple of #4 skills and a few ranged shots and he's done. Also this area is fun.
Saturn - General Sargas Ruk - Haven't done this one yet. Somehow managed to miss Saturn almost entirely.
Uranus - Tyl Regor - Haven't been here yet.
Neptune - The Hyena - Was here briefly, was also carried by a couple higher-level players.
Pluto - Arn Etina - Haven't been here yet.

Is that something separate from the map? Or something I have to do on mission?

When your account XP bar (upper left in the main view) fills up, it starts flashing. You click it, it tells you you'll need to pass a test to rank up, if you fail you get reset. Accept it and it takes you to a mission that looks like the tutorial VR area. I don't think it tests you when going from 0 to 1, but from 1 to 2 it's basically "kill 8 dudes in a minute". From 2 to 3 it's "kill 10 dudes in a minute". Really not a big deal. It takes a long, long time to get there though - took about 30 hours of playtime for me to get to rank 3.

I'm merino in-game.

For anyone starting out, my advice would be: remember that you can sell mods you don't want, this will help with early cashflow. A lot of people don't like the Burston (3?-round burst rifle with a delay before you can refire) since the damage per second is low, but the damage per ammo is good and it's accurate, I personally did like it (until I ranked up enough for the Gorgon.) For your first buy, I would recommend either the real Braton or the Burston, for your main, or the Aklato (dual semiauto pistols) for your sidearm(s). Not really sure which would be better first but none of those cost a ton.

My Rhino finished crafting yesterday but I made the classic mistake of cracking open my PC to work on something real quick just before playing... hopefully I can hop on tonight on another system to try it out, though.

The F2P model I haven't found to be offensive thus far, and I'm definitely leaning towards grabbing one of the smaller founder's packs.

The Scindo (big axe) is great, was definitely worth crafting. I need to play with the Fragor (big hammer) more, I didn't like it as much but that was comparing it to the then ranked-up Scindo. The Furis (fist weapon) is apparently quite fun but I haven't tried it out yet.

I hated the Strun (basic shotgun) on first try, I'm giving it another go, though. You rank up via completing an area for the first time or ranking up a warframe/weapon, so getting everything up to 10-15 is probably worthwhile.

The Bolto is indeed great fun and it ignores armor, but isn't good for the flying drones and is almost entirely useless against the shield guys. Crafting it does use some alloy plates which are a pain to get. Worthwhile overall, though.

From what I've read of people's testing, shared affinity (item XP) works like this in coop - when you get affinity, it applies to the weapon you're using. When someone else does, it applies to the weapon you're using or have equipped. So even if you do nothing but melee, you'll probably get a lot of XP for whichever firearm you have active, whenever your partner gets a kill or picks up an orb. To rank up melee and farm some rubedo at the same time, soloing Lua works pretty well, and isn't too difficult.

Been playing this moderately, it's a lot of fun, but unfortunately my laptop (the only equivalent of "PC gaming" I have in my hands) can't run it properly. Of course, 800x600 fixed everything :scared: but I'm willing to put the resolution in line for the entertainment I've had. I'm not that far into it yet, but it's catching, and a good "play every once in a while" game

Frankly the game is not as "pretty" as some newer titles. I don't think you'd really lose all that much by going lower resolution. You'd benefit a lot more from the extra framerate.

I'm currently working on building a Volt frame. Ember is next on my list. But I have hardly any Rubedo, and am also lacking a control module, and probably other things as well. Guess those'll come as I play more of the correct zones.

Councilor Vay Hek. I am never going to forget that name. I am going to start insulting people with that name.

We are space ninjas. We bisect space marines for phat lewtz.

As others have said in so many words, this game is simply fun. In addition to the ME3 multiplayer comparisons, it reminds me of 4 player beat 'em ups from the arcade heyday, but with guns and a less punishing desire to eat your quarters.

It's served well by giving a very good first impression. The graphics are clean and special effects impressive yet the engine is (mostly) smooth as glass. But do yourself a favor and turn off bloom. The three initial warframes (classes) you get to choose from all have a somewhat useful array of abilities so you're ensured to start out feeling like a bit of a badass. All loot drops and most item drops (HP and Energy) are shared.

On the negative end, the game needs a number of tweaks to overall balance more than anything else. The three starter frames are obviously on the best footing, but they each basically have one "choice" ability simply due to them being imbalanced compared to their others. Too many enemies are weak cannon fodder, making an extremely damaging uber ability a waste of resources due to the overkill, or placing a debuff on them a waste because they're dead before anyone can really take advantage. Cast times on some abilities also run into this same issue - by the time your animation is complete, the rest of the team has cleared the room with their guns and swords.

All that said, the gunplay and melee are so fun that I've sunk in ~30 hours in spite of the wrinkles, which I trust will be smoothed over in time. The devs push out micro-patches seemingly daily and are very active and forthcoming on the official forums. In the next six weeks or so, they plan on adding another tileset to the random map generator and have hinted at more enemy types and perhaps another faction. They are earning my dollar.

I'm Junon in game. Those of us that play get together in one of the general channels in Teamspeak. I have read that ingame VOIP was simply bugged before and actually does work, but I've never gone back in and enabled it again to verify. I also started an Ars clan for whatever that gains us. Nothing for now, I gather. And the truly nerdy among us can also use #warframe.

Race you to the hangar, Tenno!

I've been working on leveling up Mag (got her to rank 13 last night) and simultaneously working on the Plasma Sword. Since the sword has better-than-normal charged damage scaling, I threw a 32% melee damage mod in the frame, and putting charge damage mods in the sword, so now it's going to start getting ridiculously multiplicative. I did bisect a heavy Grineer in one blow last night, so I think I'm starting to get there...

It's the "Furax", actually. The "Furis" is a pistol.
D'oh! Thanks. The Furis and dual version (Afuris) are fun but chew through ammo fast. Could be nice at higher levels but not very damage to ammo efficient.

My main complaint with them from having played Excalibur and run with the others is that the visual effects for Volt's Overload hurt my eyes and brain. It'll be nice to have second frames and more people in the game in general, but also because it'd be a lot more fun for me to never play with anyone running a Volt, so I don't intermittently have to close my eyes and stop playing for a few seconds.

As for specifics about the game, jargon and all...

I really really like Excalibur but haven't played Loki or Volt to compare directly. Slash Dash is cheap, extremely damaging, and a handy movement ability to boot. I only use his others when I'm farting around.

Of the weapons I've leveled, I think the Strun and Bronco are my favorites, probably because I feel at home wading into a pack of baddies. Until Squrf of Chubbs overloads the whole lot of them. Those are probably not the best guns for solo play or where accuracy and range matter. However, as was noted earlier, every weapon can be made rather awesome with a handful of good mods. For melee, I got the plasma sword and haven't looked back. If I can get an axe blueprint I'll use it ASAP because I really want multi-target melee.

I'll have Trinity (support) and Ember (fire DOT) unlocked by Saturday afternoon. Can't decide which I'll work on first since they both suffer a bit from the balance issues mentioned above but just having something new to level up will be a blast.

So, I'll admit that when I first heard about this I basically just wrote it off. What little info I found had me thinking it was just another futuristic PvP game, and with melee combat via network being hinky already it seemed like something not for me. Then I saw an excellent wikia, a rundown by TotalBiscuit, and a few other things and suddenly interest was renewed. Many thanks to Griffehpoo, otherwise I might have let this excellent opportunity for fun and co-op action slip right by me. I haven't even started, but wanted to make sure I added as many people in this thread as possible to whatever friends list this thang has (I've had...problems in the past with pubbing around).

Player name is Distraktion, looking forward to seeing people and doing things. Especially with this sudden winter shifting my body into hibernation...

Pubbing in this game is a remarkably rage-free affair. Loot drops are available for everyone on the team to pick up - everyone will get the same type of drop at roughly the same level (a generic shotgun mod, or perhaps one for a specific shotgun) but the mod effect itself may be different (I get increased magazine capacity, you get additional crit damage). Most people actually drop waypoint indicators to be sure everyone gets their pickups.

Some classes do have abilities that can teleport and pull you around, so if you're waiting at an exit or something you can be 'trolled' by getting pulled away and having to run a few feet. Sometimes people insist on searching every last nook and cranny of the mission and not sticking with the group, which can also be annoying if they're tripping security cameras and popping up laser gates. But if the rest of the team is at the exit, there will be a countdown that eventually forces the mission to end.

As mentioned earlier, I've had VOIP disabled since it was bugged a couple of weeks ago, so I have no idea how shitty people may be on mic. But so far in text chat everyone is friendly enough.

Of course as the community grows there's a great chance the good feelings will diminish, but for now it's all pretty good.

That's relieving to hear. I'm not exactly Marty McFly when it comes to shooting, so being on a team is always big in my book. My first mission or two as a Volt had me pulling through by the skin of my teeth, so I'm currently working towards a Trinity Blueprint so I can contribute more whenever I manage to find a team.

Okay, here we go...going to try pubbing. We'll see how it goes?

Jackal is actually pretty easy if you know his trick; shoot off his legs. He (it?)'ll fall over and lose shields so you can blast or punch away with impunity. When it(he?) stands up again, do the same.

Just be careful if you hear he/it launch missiles. They hurt.

Yeah, this is stupidly easy to do; anyone vaguely interested should hop to it. Thanks!

The "like ME3 co-op" has me interested and terrified. I was just now beginning to pick away at my huge backlog, after the ME3 servers capriciously stopped accepting me. Another good co-op objective game could have me playing nothing else for months again. :scared:

We should probably set up a playername list.

Agreed, the main post has been updated with the current player name list. I can't hit Google Docs at work to do up a proper editable spreadsheet, so that'll have to wait until I wake up tomorrow (unless one of you gets to it before I do, in which case just post the link and I'll throw it in the OP). I also threw Junon's beta key distributor list up there for anyone who doesn't have beta access yet.

I just threw this in the OP too, but if you contribute enough to be a master or grandmaster founder, be sure to drop by the dev discussion section of their forums. So far they're not letting us decide much with our votes, but you might as well exercise that freedom anyway. They also give sneak peeks as to what's coming in future updates - looks like some major content's planned for the next update from recent posts. That stuff's still NDA, though, so we can't discuss it much here.
