GESC Racing: The perpetual all things virtual cars thread. (includes GT6,Forza 5,etc)

Welcome everyone!

Recently we've been chatting in the Forza Motorsports 4 thread about a bunch of different games, especially now that some of that group is looking at going elsewhere to get their speed fixes. As we were talking it became apparent that despite the different games, it's generally the same group of people playing them. If you go into the GT5 thread you see the same names as the Forza threads, as the iRacing thread. So perhaps it might be best to create a thread where we can chat about whatever game we might be playing in and still be that great community of racers we've always been.

So here it is. Now there are a couple of things I'd like to see in this thread, hopefully to keep it from devolving into a battlefront of sorts. So firstly let's try keep comparisons to a minimum. It's gonna happen, and it did in the other threads but I would like to see people steer away from invalidating other's accomplishments in other games because you don't feel it's on par with your game of choice. To put it more simply, don't troll people based on the racer they're posting about. I know it doesn't need to be said for most of you, we're all respectable adults here (except that PK guy, you should watch out for him ;)).

Secondly and lastly this is a great place to recruit for any specific tournaments or series you might be in or want to run in any racing game. It is probably not the best place to run them though. So for each specific tournament you're running please create a thread for it's day to day administration. Stories and pictures from the tournaments are welcome here, but the other stuff would be best elsewhere to keep the signal to noise down in here.

So let's start ...

There is a new game in the series that launched with the XBOX One. I don't have this one so I can't weigh in on it with an opinion (yet, maybe we'll see what the future holds). Those that have it rave about it, I think it's safe to link our front page review on it.

ars technica review: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/11/f ... real-thin/

Anyway it's a franchise exclusive to the XBOX (Forza 1 on the Original Xbox, FM2,3 & 4 on the 360, and finally 5 on the One). With a great selection of cars, fresh DLC month to month and passion brought in part by narration from the hosts of Top Gear UK. Forza Motorsport 5 continues this tradition of excellence on and off the track with as faithful as possible simulations and graphics. To say the game looks stunning is an understatement.

Forza Motorsport 4 has been my primary racing fix since it's launch. Well after some account issues (credit glitch with the Storefront) which caused the deletion of my first two weeks of progress. It was fixed soon enough and we were off to the races in season 1 of Forzars. Filling out newly widened lobbies (up to 16 players) each Friday in a multi-class series. Since then I've logged tens of thousands of miles in total, mostly chasing ghosts in rivals. We still run shenanigans (non-serious racing) most Friday nights while we wait to figure out where everyone will land after the dust of the new games & console launches settles.

Since iRacing uses real names and I understand people wouldn't want that posted in public here I'd like to list each forum name with a link to their profile so PM's could be sent to request that info. I'm not 100% familiar with how the service handles friend requests and such, so if there is a better way please let me know.
Often referred to as a service, which I never really got the idea behind, rather than a game. This simulator is often talked about as the pinnacle of current PC racers. It's good, very good. It does however have some drawbacks like a monthly subscription (not unjustified in my opinion) and it tends to look a bit dated compared to some other games.

I've had a good deal of time with this game as well, probably just under 20k miles driven. My early runs netted me several poles in the rookie series and a win within my first 3 races. Which moved me up a license level before I had finished my first week. It took me much longer (with a many month break in there) to reach the next level which I got in my last stint with the game. All in all if you have the horsepower to run it, a good wheel and the time learn it's a great PC racer.

Lookout thread : viewtopic.php?p=1068158#p1068158

I went through the first 20 pages of the GESC looking for another thread, but can't find it nor can search (that was the first GT related thread to come up in search). So I'm probably missing a more pertinent one here so if someone could link it or PM me with it that would be great.

This is the series, probably like most of us, that really started my love for virtual racers. I can still feel the anticipation when I re-watch the intro sequence to Gran Turismo 1. I followed that series faithfully until GT4. By that time I had gotten a taste of online racing via Papyrus' Nascar games (2002 & 2003) then EA's Nascar 2004.

This is also where I developed my love for tweaking cars. My methods of tuning and perfecting a machine for a course was developed in my teens to this game. Despite there being no reason, aside from bragging rights between some of my friends. We'd hold ad-hoc hot lap competitions in high school which would end with us sitting around a TV in a cold basement. Memory cards in hand to show off our final products live.

Unfortunately I missed out on the latest installment of the series, not because I have any specific aversion to it. I just didn't have a PS3, couldn't afford a proper wheel for it (until I got my Fanatec). So it just kinda passed me by. With GT6 coming out December 6th for the PS3 and I have the wheel for it, I doubt I'll be missing much of this upcoming installment.

Currently in early access testing I've seen this talked about around on the forums in the Forza thread. I haven't had the opportunity (and doubt I will for a while to take it out for a spin). Some of the reviews posted so far about it suggest it provides a kick ass driving experience on par or better than the best of them.

Need For Speed Series :

Racers, including platform version and relevant contact info.

You really can't talk virtual racing without bringing up Need For Speed. Love it or hate it this series has been around forever in various permutations. From the "classic" Hot Pursuits to attempts at a serious racer in Porsche Unleashed and Shift, even to an MMO with Need For Speed World. Pound for pound this series has delivered over the years some astonishingly fun driving.

I haven't had too much sit down time with the later games in the series, so I can't weigh in too much on them. However all my memories from any of the Need For Speed games are mostly positive. They may not be technically astonishing, but they're great games none the less.

Their latest release, Need For Speed Rivals, I haven't given a go yet. Though from what I've seen, http://youtu.be/eDA37BmvNwM (skip in a couple minutes if you want to see the point of that video as opposed to just ranting about the unskipable crap), you should probably only consider this title for the console.

F1 Series :

Homepage: http://www.formula1-game.com/us/whats-new
Thread: I looked and couldn't find one, if you have one please link, thanks.

In the days of old. I loved Formula 1. I would stay up all night, or get up extra early to watches the races live in my mid teens. The races were visceral, loud and down right good. Sure it was (and is) sometimes a snor fest, but deep down somewhere in there you know good racing is being done. I too loved the formula one games I could get my hands on. The tracks were all familiar, I knew the drivers. It was great and the games were a cinch.

When I picked up F1 2012 I figured like the games of old the cars would be dumbed down a little, and the hundreds of thousands of miles I have driven in various simulators since my early days. This should be wonderful right? No game before (GT Legends came a very close second in this) has kicked my ass so very efficiently. Within minutes in the car on track it was very, very obvious my skills were far below that required to drive this thing to it's full.

What an experience though. It's terrible and violent. Loud and in your face. The straights quickly warp into a blurr and the corners are all too fast approaching. You clammer for more while it's realism knocks you down. Nothing quite fills you up like a few laps in this. I haven't much seat time in this unfortunately. For two reasons, I'm just no good at it and it's a massive pain in the ass to hook my PC up to my driving gear. When I do though I get lost in the violence of it. So much so that I've often lost an entire day without realizing it.

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head. If I am missing anything important please point it out to me and I will edit this post as often as I can with new links, information and stuff. Like I mentioned at the top all things virtual racing is cool here. Just because it's not listed doesn't mean we can't talk about it I'm sure I'll grow this list a bunch more over the course of the week-end. Even just now I I thought up some that I am missing and going to work on adding like, GRID, F12012/2013, MarioKart, Dirt, etc.

So what say you GESC Racers, like the bigger home?

Edit (1/28/14): Added some names I missed and was able to find, removed needless spoilers. If you are missing from a list please PM me your details, or if you intend to add them in a post please bold them so I can find them easier. Any other suggestions to add or remove to the OP please PM me those as well.

So in case you're wondering why I created this thread today. It was because I had seen this (http://www.topgear.com/uk/car-news/gran ... 2013-11-20) from Top Gear about a chance meeting they got with Kazunori Yamauchi, creator of Gran Turismo. Since I couldn't find the GT thread, it's not really on topic for the Forza thread or others I made this one.

Anyway a small interesting excerpt from the article if you can't click through to it at work or something.

"We don't want to take too long on Gran Turismo 7," Kazunori told us. "Best-case scenario? Next year."

While I'm sure that's a bit optimistic at this point given the series' past with GT5, I wouldn't put it past them to try though. Not that I want to really start speculating about GT7 before GT6 has even hit the shelves yet but it seems obvious to me that they're going to hurry the next version of the series out the door and onto the PS4. I'm very curious what will carry over from the upcoming game, GT6, into 7. Though we're no where near even basic speculation on that yet.

Speaking of GT anyway. Anyone else having problems finding information on the new game coming out? I've spent some time over the last couple of days trying to dig up trailers or releases and such. All I can ever seem to find is that the information has been released, but not where yet. If you got some links to share please do.

Regarding GT6:

Track list (at the bottom)
Full car list
Nice, if not very informative, article on Kaz

I like this thread idea. Personally I'm still active in GT5 (PSN: elarogi), although I don't do much random online racing. Usually when I boot up the game, the choice comes down to a) do some hot laps around the Nordschleife, or b) do anything else. Nordschleife usually wins :p
Feel free to add me on PSN, though.

I'll probably also pick up GT6, but I'm holding out on more details regarding the microtransactions and in-game economy.

Cool, thanks for the links.

I poured over the car & track list the other day while in a waiting room. I like what I see in that list. I especially drooled when I saw Daytona International on that list. I do love that infield track. What is the rumors on the economy and stuff you're looking for more details on. I haven't really managed to see / hear much about GT6 up until recently when I started looking around harder for the stuff. To this point I haven't heard anything off putting about either, and without experience in GT5 I can't draw from what they've done recently. Did they make the grinding terrible or the like?

From what I've heard I'm actually pretty excited about their DLC offerings. From the language on their site (http://www.gran-turismo.com/us/products/gt6/tracks/ about halfway down) they seem to be promising new tracks with every update to the title. They're not listing how often those new tracks will come, instead they talk about how they four new locations in GT5. They also mentioned somewhere that some new cars will come as free offerings available in their respective dealerships after a title update, and some will remain paid DLC. Though I haven't been able to confirm anything in that. Nor can I find where I saw it mentioned at the moment, but I will I think.

Anyway it's pretty neat that they adopted Forza's approach with making the cars appear in the dealerships after an update so that you can purchase them (or their pack) from there.

Edit: Nevermind I get I see it now. So they're talking you can buy ingame credits for RL money. Kind of a slippery slope that one. It really depends on how much those micro-transactions influenced the development of the game. If it's too hard to earn the credits through in game means then that poses a serious problem. I'm going to poke around a bit more on this subject and see if I can come up with some more details somehow.

They haven't said much beyond "there will be microtransactions". You can buy in-game credits, but not much else is known.
In GT5, money is ridiculously easy to come by now. You can make millions in 10-15 minute races if you can drive even just semi-decently. It's not money that's the limiting factor, it's the annoying randomness of the used car dealership (which is where the majority of cars are sold).
It didn't used to be that way, and I would imagine since they're now selling in-game credits in GT6 and most cars will be available in fixed dealerships, you will never see money reach that point of easy availability.

Which is a shame, because the GT Academy demo was fun. I loved the improved handling and physics modeling. We'll see I suppose.

Has anyone else picked up Test Drive Unlimited 2 during the Steam sale? The game servers and thus online play still work, in spite of the developer apparently having been shuttered* and Atari being in some weird state of limbo.

(*and apparently Eden Games has just re-formed, or something)

Anyway, for $6.99 I took the plunge. I can see why it didn't set the world on fire but it's pretty decent at that price.

I created an ArsClan club a couple of nights ago, so if anyone grabs the game and wants to join up, I'll be sure to add you.

lol, whoops my fault for not looking around before I posted. I did find this (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013- ... ansactions) after making that post.

I went digging some more to see if I can find some kind of sampling what it will be like to earn credits in the game. I managed to find this picture.

link: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013- ... ansactions

That shows the payout for a Sunday cup race. Doesn't look to be that far out of line with what I'm used to in a novice series.

This one shows an event from the coffee break.

http://www.gtpla.net/wp-content/uploads ... reak02.jpg

Again it looks like credits shouldn't be that hard to come by at least in the lower levels it's pretty inline with what I'm used to seeing.

This one is a special mission, or event.

http://www.gtpla.net/wp-content/uploads ... cial02.jpg

compared to just one image I can find real quick with a car dealer on screen ...

Doesn't look to me to be too bad yet, at least nothing that scares me away at the moment. I'll keep digging around but I thought those were a bit re-assuring at least.

I haven't tried it on PC but I did grab it from a discount bin for the 360 a long while back (I also have the original TDU on both PC & 360). It's a great game so far but I have very limited time in it because it really hurts my eyes. Shame because I loved TDU1 so much despite it's many flaws.

I might consider picking it up on PC (thanks for the link) just to see if it's graphics there are good enough that I can play it at least.

Feel like this is an AA thread (Automotive Anonymous).

Hello, I am Kilkenny and I am a Forza addict.

(my GT on XBL is kilkenny99)

I was a rookie when FM3 came out (motivated to jump in largely because of the Ars league that was running) and progressed to FM4. I haven't decided if/when I'll get an XB1 (that will largely depend on XB1 wheel availability), but when I do FM5 will likely be in my future too. The fact that the shifter on my 360 wheel is broken has moved that time up more than I'd originally planned.

I don't have a PC wheel - but have been eyeing the F1 series and now Asseto Corsa too.

Saw them using it on InsideSimRacing when doing a test drive in Asseto Corsa (and previously in FM5 clips).

I saw that too but PS4 compatibility is conspicuously absent.

Edit: Just read up to your previous post: have you been using the original 360 wireless wheel? If so you are in for a real treat of an upgrade when you migrate to a newer setup....but then you're in this pinch of having to kiss goodbye to 360 compatibility.

Kilkenny[/url]":xj2w48wi]Yup - I have the MS wheel. I'd picked it up when the price had dropped to $99. That combination of a relatively low buy-in price, years of service, and that it's damaged is why I haven't been upset by the transition, but I know I'd be singing a different tune if I'd bought a Fanatec.

Speaking of Fanatec this got me thinking to rummage around and see if anything new has been posted recently. Of course my first stop would be their home page. Unfortunately it's without much new information of it's own. I did find a little box with some quotes from their face book page, here (https://www.facebook.com/Fanatec). Two posts related to the Xbox One functionality and potential future of Fanatec and the Xbox.

So we start with an older post, from November 18th.

XBox 360 Wheels on XBox One
So far there is no adapter solution to make an Xbox360 wheels compatible with Xbox One and it is unsure if this will be possible.
But there is a high chance that you can use your pedals, rims and shifters with a potential new Fanatec wheel for Xbox One although we cannot confirm a launch date yet. This will save you a lot of money and you can keep using the equipment you prefer.

So I guess Fanatec is working up a new wheel too? This would definitely help take the pinch out of the current upgrade path, and if the device is compatible with all consoles + pc again I'm sold. I still enjoy the shit out of my pedals so those I wouldn't change, I would likely change out my shifter to the club sport version if I can catch it on sale sometime.

Anyway a bit later on in the month they decided another statement about Xbox One functionality was in order this one posted on November 19th ...

Why is it so difficult to make your current Xbox 360 wheels compatible to the new console?

Several people have raised their concerns and we understand your disappointment but we also hope you see that there is nothing Fanatec could have done to make your wheels compatible to the new console. Technically it is probably possible to make an adapter but any device connecting to the Xbox 360 or Xbox One (incl. this adapter) needs to have a security chip module which can only be purchased from MS. So without the permission of MS we could only "crack" the security chip and this is not only illegal but would certainly ruin our relationship to MS and other platform owners.
And we were not able to "warn" anybody about this as up to this moment it is still possible that MS changes its mind like they did on other specs of the XB1 as well. It still can happen but we want to be fair and tell you that it is not likely to happen.
We never claimed that the wheels were compatible to Xbox one and please remember that all peripherals of the first Xbox did not work on Xbox 360 either.
But even if we were able to make such an adapter, the development costs would be significant as the XB1 uses a different force feedback protocol and in our wheels the Xbox protocols and PC protocols are separated and use different communication (wireless vs. USB). Given the limited market for such a device, such an adapter would be quite expensive.
Microsoft has good reasons to skip the backwards compatibility as this allowed to implement a completely new and more powerful communication protocol. Of course they are happy to sell new controllers to you and earn money on licenses but keep in mind that a console is about plug and play. MS is very strong to provide a clear standard for controllers and make sure that all controllers work with all games of a certain genre. On other consoles it can happen that your brand new and official controller works only with one game because the communication protocols are not clearly defined from the beginning.

The only thing we can offer is to develop a wheel where you can at least use your peripherals so you don’t have to buy a complete new setup. And when this wheel is ready, we will make an attractive upgrade offer for all existing customers for sure.

This was a pretty long post with a lot of inside information but I hope you can understand the situation a bit better now.
I really appreciate your support and patience.

Best regards
Thomas

Which sheds more light on the problem than we had previously. Not that anything comes as a surprise. Microsoft re-invents the wheel compared to the crap they did last time then slap a pay wall around the whole thing. I'm not saying I don't understand why they did it, just that they didn't have to. Now if an affordable solution comes along that allows me a relatively easy upgrade path into the Xbox One comes around I'd definitely consider it. Mostly so I can keep using these pedals ;)

Ultimately like I said before I am a simple geek. I love new stuff as much as the next guy. I don't really want to be using a 5 year old wheel for the rest of my gaming life. What the guys need to remember when they build these things (thankfully the thrustmaster seems to be dual platform) is that they're generally built into a space to be used. I can't unbolt my Fanatec every couple of days to jump platforms (or hours depending on the case) and frankly I'm not about to. Whatever the new wheel that replaces this (eventually) is, it's going to have to be multiplatform. That's the sticking point for me.

Aside from that guarantee some degree of value for dollar and we're gold. I can tell you for sure, I'm not about to switch back to an old POT brake.

Yeah, really... Following your lead... Hi, my name is Tom, and I am also a Forza 4 addict. Not planning on getting an XB1 for at least a little while. It likely will happen though.

In addition to my Forza addiction, and also on XBox 360, I'm occasionally on the game NASCAR: Inside Line. Really, an underrated title. It doesn't have as good of physics as Forza, by any stretch. But it conveys the white-knuckle "Hang on Jeb, we're goin' three wide!" fun and insanity of NASCAR pack racing so well. When you're not in a lobby full of wreckers, that is. Which means not in any public lobby. Ever. Mistakes are one thing, but when you get a lobby with several people who are just intent on wrecking the field, it totally ruins the gameplay for everyone. If there were some Ars folks interested in oval tracking... I'd love to get a private lobby set up with cool people who will actually try to have a good race on this one. I just don't have enough friends that play this to be on it very often.

I'm also on PC. iRacing is pretty awesome, though I never have the time to spend to really get as comfortable with the cars as I'd like. It is one of those things I keep planning on doing more of, but other priorities keep getting in the way.

Assetto Corsa has my eye, but multiplayer is likely a ways off, yet. It is a very early build. But what is there is really good. I've never had more fun driving on an abandoned track.

I hope to see you all on the track. The XBox 360 Forza 4 group we have is the most awesome group I've ever driven with. Seriously, all the folks that have dropped in rock.

...AA Thread...

My "name's" Red, and I'm an addict.

My first racing game that I sunk WAAAY too much time into was Rage Racer, back on the PS1. 7 tracks, 13 cars, and I still love that game. Something in me wants a one-make game like that again, but knows that it's not all that good.

Graduated to the harder stuff, when Gran Turismo came out. I was amazed at the level of detail that went into it. Mind you, I was 13, so everything was AMAZING! Started learning more on setups, especially gear ratios, and learning more about cars to lust after that we can't get here in the 'States yet (I'm looking at you, R32 V-Spec II).

Sequel came out, and I finally got some more friends to play.

College came, and with it GT3. Fastest Best Buy run ever, in and out in under 3 minutes. Spent the rest of the day in awe of how GOOD everything looked now (Now with 75% less jaggies!)

Then came love, marriage, a full time job, and my 2.3 children. But, daddy's 1st, and only, baby shower gift was an Xbox 360 from my best friend, and with it, Forza 2. Then 3, and 4. I seriously would have stayed with the Gran Turismo series if there wasn't the 5 year delay between demo and release.

Another game that stuck out was Viper Racing. This started me learning even more on setups.

Part of me would like to try iRacing, but another part of me is thinking "Not even once" since that is a pretty deep rabbit hole.

Gamertag - ReDeath0001
Steam ID - ReDeath (I'm also in the ARS group for ease of location)
PSN ID - ReDeath0001 (Not on yet, but registered years ago)

I try to be on Friday nights for Shenanigans, but being a gigging musician I find myself gone about half the time as of late. Announcements of that sort will likely stay in the FM4 thread.

GT6 - Gotta love the padding on the car lists. Sure, there's 1000+ cars, but how many copies of each RX7/Skyline/FTO do we need? However, I am TOTALLY looking forward to driving the DeltaWing on Apricot Hill. Love that track!

...AA Thread...

My first racing game that I sunk WAAAY too much time into was Rage Racer, back on the PS1. 7 tracks, 13 cars, and I still love that game. Something in me wants a one-make game like that again, but knows that it's not all that good.

Way to make me feel old. I'm Ian, and have been an addict since Chequered Flag on the ZX Spectrum (we had a pancil and paper list of best lap times for each circuit) and progressed through Vroom on the Atari ST, Ridge Racer, Formula 1 and Porsche Challenge on the Playstation, then the Need for Speed series on PC from Porsche 2000 to Carbon, and after a brief flirt with Project Gotham 3 when I got a 360, settled into the Forza series (2, 3, 4 and Horizons.) I've also played through some of the codemasters games (Dirt 2 & 3 and the F1 series.)

I hate to think how many hours I've spent driving in a virtual circle (but hey, it's cheaper than buying tires!)

As another game to add to the first post, simraceway is supposed to be pretty good and is free to play. Probably not as good as iracing, but is worth checking out.

I feel like a dealer pushing drugs on the addicts, but bundlestars.com has a bundle containing Race Injection for $3 today, which is simbin's Race 07 and expansions. It's also on steam for $4. It's a WTCC based game, unlike the GT series which simbim became famous for.

Well, if we're all getting into backstory, I suppose you could say I started with 280 Zzzzap on the Astrocade... But really now.... :D

I'll agree that SimRaceway is another decent simulation that should be mentioned here. I've played a bit on it, and while I haven't really gone back to it much, that is more because of time constraints than the lack of quality.

Also, that is a great price for Race Injection. I don't play the SimBin series anymore, but I'm tempted to pick it up if it's on that good of a sale. They are sound games, even though, personally, I don't like the feel of the cars in them. I was resigned to playing the GT series until I made the move to XBox for Forza.

RaceRoom is a freemium SimBin title with very similar physics. See if it's your cup of tea.

And, also, one more freemium game some might care to check out is Eutechnyx AutoClub Revolution.

Personally, not my favorite, but not bad, and you can't beat the cost of entry. (Free)

Indeed, it does feel like pushing drugs a bit. :D

Hi, I'm GrinningGator(on XBL and Steam)/MurphDogg and I'm not a Forza addict. I can quit Forza anytime I like. Why just this weekend I was shopping around for parts to build a new gaming PC (I haven't had one in ~10 years) so that I can use my beloved Fanatec "Forza" CSR wheel/pedals to try out some of the fine PC sim racing experiences (iRacing and Assetto Corsa, in particular).

Oh, wait... that doesn't help my case.

Fine, I'm an addict. And I have you all to blame.

I played some Forza 1 on the original xbox, but never ventured into multiplayer. I was honestly more into Project Gotham Racing at that point. I did play a bit of Gran Turismo on a PS2 that I bought late in its life cycle solely for Guitar Hero (if you counted all the plastic instruments in my house... but that's a story for a different meeting).

My problem really started with Forza 2 when I, on a whim, signed up for an Ars league. Before that point, I'd never really messed with the tuning and painting. Oh, what a rabbit hole that is! Testing and practicing for the league races really checked all my OCD boxes and the racing long, clean races against skilled racers was exactly what I needed to get hooked on a racing sim. That lead to F1 2012 and F1 2013 (though I've never actually completed a season in either one).

Long races with the controller were pretty uncomfortable. At some point along the road (I think during the Forza 3 years), I lucked into a free Microsoft wheel (surplus from a friend's workplace) and I don't think I can go back to a controller again. When one of the shifter paddles broke, I rigged up a solution with ducktape and wire ties. When the button on the circuit board for the shifter started failing, I soldered in a new button and mounted it to the now fixed-position shifter paddle. Finally, the gears inside the wheel just shattered. There was no chance of repair.

So I bit the bullet and bought the Fanatec. I knew it was late in the 360's life. I knew there was a chance that it wouldn't be supported on the Xbox One. But I had to have a wheel! And at least it had PC, PS3, and possibly PS4 compatibility if our worst fears about Xbox One were confirmed.

And when those fears were confirmed, I started looking at PC racers. I will probably get an Xbox One eventually. But right now, there's nothing must-have about it. I'm not sold on voice controls and find the Kinect just a little bit creepy. Forza 5 had the potential to push me over the edge, but without a wheel and with some of the directional changes Turn 10 has made this time around... I'm waiting on the Xbox One.

So when I get my new gaming PC built, I'll be checking out the current state of PC racing. And if Forza 4 Fridays continue for a while, I'll try to remember to join in on the fun (lately I've had a heck of a time remembering). Sure, consoles and PCs and wheels get expensive, but I figure a sim racing habit is MUCH cheaper (and safer) than a real racing habit...

This ... left me feeling cautiously optimistic. Although it does look like there's fewer cars as rewards for individual series, which seems to be similar to what Forza 5 is doing, and I don't like it.

The gated progression I'm not keen on. I know it's easy to blow past all the lower level events, but it's still unnecessary. Just let me drive, dammit.
That said, since I've taken part in the GT Academy 2013, at least I'll get a free race-modified GT-R, which is a nice bonus and should help speed things up a bit.

I also give Assetto Corsa a try a couple days back. I think I was most impressed with the way the car felt off-road, and the force feedback in general was pretty good. Performance is comparatively awful, but I can let that slide, it's obviously far from release code.
Unfortunately, it has the same problem that plagues many of the more "realistic" sims, and that's a forced cockpit view. That just doesn't work with a single 24" monitor setup. Most of the screen space is taken up by an interior I don't care about, and a steering wheel I don't need to see because, guess what, there already is a physical one right in front of me.
So I end up not being able to see squat, definitely much, much less than you could see from a real car cockpit, so I'm not sure how this is any better or more realistic. For me, it's just annoying and a definite no-buy because of it, even if the handling felt pretty good already.

I guess I skipped the intro...<Stands Up>

My name is PKDAWG and I'm a race-aholic. It had been two years since my last race due to Mrs. PKDAWG 2.0 moving in (good thing). The man cave turned into the US cave and I really never got around to setting up shop in the garage....

GESC is completely responsible for sucking me into this hobby. I didn't have a console, or a wheel and was generally ignorant of sim-racing. That all changed when I started following the Forza 2 Season 1 thread here and read with wonder the exploits of Biscuit, 10k, Unimental, Abulia, Happysin, Trike, Endif and others (pardon my memory). These guys were getting so into this league they'd set up and were posting loads of ways to get around the courses faster, sharing setups and of course most importantly PICTARS. After each race they'd break it down like professional commentators. It was fascinating and I wanted in....fast forward a few months and I had a 360 and barged my way in to their league pulling a 2nd place finish at Maple Valley in my first race (that turned out to be a lucky fluke).

Since then I've raced tons in Forza 3 and 4 with the current crop of Ars simracing junkies (you know who you are), GT 5, iRacing, many of the SimBin games (GT-Legends was my favorite). Forza really is in my sweet spot in terms of easy access to fun racing solo or with friends and I'd love to be participating in the current version but I'm not going to buy an Xbox One and a new wheel to do so. Oh well.

Forza 5 prompted me to dig my wheel out of the garage and setup my PS3 in preparation for GT 6. For all you Fanatec users out there the latest Firmware 757 really cleaned up some of the vibration issues I was having and I'm getting it dialed in for December 6th.

Hopefully I'll find my Forza Motorsport 4 disc so I can get in some friday racing but this coming friday, who is in for some GT6? I am.

Hi, my name is Village and I've been trying to get addicted to sim racing since GT3.

I've been primarily racing in the GT series since 3 and iRacing on PC since 2008. Unfortunately, wife + kids has prevented my addiction from really setting in properly so I will normally only binge at them for a few weeks and then go dormant for a while. Part of my reason for getting into sim racing is Autocrossing was getting too expensive a hobby for me to maintain. I've tried other sim racers but I've found my time limits don't allow me to get into them much. Though I really really really want to get into a good WRC game/league.

I also used to organized GT5 race nights with spec cars which a few of you might remember. I have every intention of doing the same with GT6 so I'm hoping there is enough interest that it becomes a going affair again.

I'm Win 7 and haven't had any issues with my CSR Elite.

Wow, there's a blast from the past. Welcome back. Do you still have your Fanatec setup?

No F1 for me.

Edit: If anybody else gets GT 6 up and running today let's kick the tires on Multiplayer.

My copy shipped today, so I'll be delayed. Also need to figure out a new wheel stand since my old one didn't last, and the office desk isn't as immersive.

Strange they couldn't have online ready for review, even if not many would be racing. Maybe an online update could be added, but you're probably burned out on reviewing racers.

Initial impressions of GT 6 are WOW. Those community college courses in UI/UX design really paid off for the PD team.

It's so easy to turn on your PS3, launch the game, and get in a race. I'm going to say the driving feel is much more to my liking than GT5 without being able point to what about it is different. Feels much more like a Forza game might. Great sense of the weight of the car coming through FFB in the wheel.

Willow Springs is a blast.....even in the Honda Fit.

The audio and graphics are fine and the cars and scenery meet my expectations.

I had to crank my gamma way up for some reason.

Back to career mode........

I gave simraceway a go last night after mentioning it earlier. Is not bad, has a good track selection (I guess they license the last scanned track data that forza won't pay for) with CotA, Silverstone and maybe a dozen more real world tracks. There's only 3 cars available (Lancer, BMW 1 series and a fantasy formula ford/3000 open wheel.) Other cars are bought with either in game credits or real money, and range from a few quarters for a go kart or econobox to a couple of bucks for a racing car.
The physics seem a bit off though, or maybe there are sections of CotA paved with ice. The free cars all understeered like crazy until 1970s style 911 snap oversteer arrives and then you're ass first in the wall. Saving a spin was nearly impossible with my 360 gamepad, but maybe it's easier with a wheel. Steering was also very sensitive, I guess I should have played with that setting more to see if I could dial it out.
Graphics were good - I don't have a monster gaming rig but it looked at least as good as forza 3. There were a couple of glitches (gaps in the door) but nothing major.
Overall, it was OK. I'm not sure how much it'll suffer from pay-to-win, but they mostly have car specific races set up which should prevent that.

I had to part ways w/ the Fanatec setup when I moved, so I'm 360 controller only for now unfortunately.

How is GT6 with the microtransactions? The direction Turn10 took with Forza5 completely turned me off FM5 and the XboxOne unfortunately...

Either a Logitech G27, or one of the fanatecs. Both will just work with PS3 and PC, though I haven't seen anything confirmed for either on the PS4 front.
