Part of the heft of the case for me (M2 iPad Pro 12.9) seems to help balance out the weight of the iPad itself as it's magnetically attached to the top. I feel that if it were any lighter it'd be top heavy and unstable when used in laptop-like mode.

I leave the pencil magnetically attached to mine when I'm using it, but yeah, I don't know how that works/doesn't work on a non pro iPad.

Look in to the Logitech iPad ComboTouch keyboard cases.

they have detachable keyboards that lessen weight and thickness. They light up and have function keys and glass trackpad (though not as excellent as Apple trackpads).

another option is the ESR keyboard case that has the case detaching from the keyboard - though I have not personally used them so can’t comment on quality Of the keyboard function.

i have the ESR non-keyboard case that uses similar concept For the iPad M4 Pro and am very happy - the magnets in my case are excellent

Logitech combo user here, on my second generation of these. Tne two modes of operation are quite handy, with the keyboard off, your iPad still has a kick-stand and all-round protection, which is imo essential.

The quality and design are comparably unimpressive.

Edit: Since using full shell cases, I never damaged any of my iPads. I regard these things as a Apple Care substitution with added value.

The only thing that keeps me on a Magic Keyboard is that it can be used in the lap. If my MK goes south, the ESR case eventually looks like a good replacement for me since it works similarly but also lets you rotate the iPad, which is handy for some uses, holds the iPad in a higher position, and has a function key row.

Are there no good true clamshell cases anymore? The Brydge keyboard case gets mixed reviews, and the one I would need for my M1 iPad Pro is not sold anymore, though some are available through third-party sellers.

I bought a Brydge a few years back and returned it immediately — for all the (considerable) heft, it didn't actually offer corner protection (although they may have changed the design since then). All my iPad Pros have gone into Logitech Folios, which is bulky (but not so heavy) with a decent keyboard and reassuringly wraps round the edges/corners of the iPad.
