Ethernet connection not coming back up after connection restored

I'm dipping my toes into Linux to switch my Plex server over to running Ubuntu Server 22.04.

I think I've got most of this figured out, but I just ran into an odd issue. I was updating my router's firmware, and after it got done rebooting, the Linux box didn't have connectivity anymore. Can't ping it, can't connect in, nothing. The only thing I could do was hit the reset switch. Everything came back up just fine.

Any help on how to fix this?

you're a bit scant on details but my first hunch is that your router hands out DHCP and maybe DNS local addresses? with the firmware update it lost it's leases DB and the Ubuntu box address changed? Ways to disprove me/investigate further:
  • first is any of what I said about the router correct?
  • how is networking configured on the linux box (DHCP/static IP etc.)
  • /var/log/syslog (or .1, .2.gz, 3.gz etc. for yesterday, day before, day before that etc.) on the linux box will contain events there will likely be a clue there

Router handles DHCP and forces DNS through my PiHoles. I use MAC address binding to assign the same IPs to certain clients (like servers). The clients all use DHCP, including the Linux box. After the update, all my other boxes (mostly Windows, but another Ubuntu Server box, as well) got their connectivity back fine.

The only difference between the two Ubuntu boxes that I can think of is that the one that's having a problem had desktop components installed at one point. I doubt that matters, but it's all I can think of.

I'll check out those logs and see if they say anything interesting
