LG Gram USB-C Charging Problem

Here is my setup: LG Gram 14 running Windows Pro 11, Samsung C34J monitor.

The LG uses USB-C charging and it works fine with its own adaptor.

I used to be able to charge the LG with the Samsung monitor through its USB-C port which also carries the display data.

But now whenever I plug in the USB-C cable into the LG, Windows will lose all the notification icons on the right hand side of the taskbar including WiFi, sound and charging. And it behaves abnormally as well including not showing the cursor etc.. If I unplug the cable, the laptop works normally again and the missing icons show up as well.

Any idea on where I should look to fix this issue?

Thanks a lot!

Sounds like it is just using the monitor as the primary display, or maybe using the laptop screen as primary. It's not clear which screen you want to use or if you want both mirrored or extended or what.

The laptop probably has a function key to change the use of the second display output or you can manage the display settings in the Windows Settings - System - Display section. Set it to use whichever monitor you want as primary etc.

I used to be able to switch the displays in whatever combinations I wanted with a function key.

The problem is not selecting which display to use, it's Windows hanging once I plug in the monitor.

You didn't say Windows was hanging. What you described is just it switching to use the other display as primary (cursor moves to the other screen, notifications and clock move to the other screen, etc.).

You have double checked that the notifications and stuff are not moved to the other screen? Have you tried just restarting the computer with the display connected to see if it makes any difference? Tried Ctrl-Alt-Del to see if you get a menu to launch task manager, log out or reboot from the power menu in the corner?

I swear it didn't work this way before, I'll check to see if there is some monitor configuration that I've changed inadvertently.
You mean Windows might have changed settings on you by itself without any warning?! Slander! Lies! Shame on you!

Probably a display driver update installed and heavens forbid such a thing not default your configuration.
