The local bigbox place has their usual offers, including cheap Chromebooks. One is an Asus CX1500CNA-EJ0061 with a matte fullhd 15"6 panel, 8GB RAM, 64GB EMC, and Intel 3350 CPU. This costs 105USD.

This seems cheap for a new laptop, and 8GB is nice for ChromeOS.

The small print says, with large actually: Security updates untill June 2027. Android apps and data will be removed June 2024.

I googled that ChromeOS receives 10 years of support for new devices. So this must be an older model, explaining the price.

What is happening in June to Android, since it's removed? That seems like a major downside to most of the fun I'd have with it.

Without Android it would be fine for browsing, YouTube, maybe Twitch, etc. But I do have an Android library that I'd like to use.

So, Android support will be removed, all apps installed gone?

"--Google's End-of-Life (EOL) policy states that Chromebooks will receive security updates for at least 8 years from the date of their release. This means that Chromebooks released in 2016 will stop receiving security updates in 2024.

--Android apps on Chrome OS are based on the Android Runtime (ART), which is an older version of the Android framework. As Android continues to evolve, the ART on Chrome OS will become increasingly out of date and incompatible with newer Android apps.

--Google has decided to discontinue Android app support on Chromebooks in order to focus on developing native Chrome OS apps. Native Chrome OS apps are more secure and performant than Android apps, and they can be optimized for the specific hardware and software of Chrome OS devices.

--Users of Chromebooks affected by this change will still be able to use Android apps that were installed on their devices before the EOL date. However, they will not be able to install new Android apps or update existing apps to newer versions.

That's a pity then, because the Android portion is what I wanted. For its intended use, ie. webbrowsing, media streaming, light office use, its just fine. GeForce NOW is supported as well. Maybe someone will be happy with this laptop for 105USD.

If I could run Hearthstone after June, I'd still get it. That and EtihadTV from Android is all I'd need. :/

I can sideload apps, but nah.
