Gaming laptops with 2 SSDs?

A few years back, when I bought my current laptop, SSDs had just shrunk and many models allowed a 2nd SSD to be added. I fell in love with this feature. However, it seems like most manufacturers dropped the ability to have a 2nd SSDs in favor of shrinking their chassis. I haven't been able to find any major brand laptops that still allow 2 SSDs.
It will be mostly a development machine, that I can game on occasionally. It doesn't need to play the newest and greatest games
Needs: (It will be mostly a development machine, that I can game on occasionally.)
  • Nice 15-16" screen (2K or 4K and bright enough to be viewed outside.
  • GPU similar to an Nvidia 4050 or 4060 in performance
  • 32GB RAM
  • 1TB SSD that I can add an extra drive to.
  • It doesn't need to be "small and light" but need to be sturdy enough to travel. I'd rather have full-sized USB and HDMI ports than low weight. It will get hauled in the field to connect to devices I might need to upload my code to. Doesn't need to be "ruggedized" just not flimsy.
  • Battery for 3+ hours of heavy usage.
  • Must be a major brand that I can get parts for if the screen cracks or similar.
  • In a perfect world it would have a touch screen, but I know it is almost impossible to find gaming laptops with touch screens
  • I'm hoping to stay under $2k, certainly under $2500. Won't complain if it requires me to buy aftermarket RAM and SSD and install them myself if it saves money to do so.

Who still sells prosumer laptops that allow 2 SSDs? Please tell me somebody still makes these without getting into >>$3K professional laptops.

Dumb question: Why do you need 2 SSDs? Why not a single larger SSD?

That said, my Legion 5 Pro Gen 6 has 2 SSDs in it, only as a result of upgrading. Bought a 1 TB to replace the 512 GB that came with the device, then bought a 2 TB upgrade later and, well, the slot is there, so...

The latest gen Legion Pro 5s have 2 SSD slots. Pretty sure there's no touch screen option though.

It's a chonker though.

I just like the security of knowing I can upgrade the storage without having to reinstall by swapping in a bigger D: drive. I'm probably old-fashioned, but I really like the idea of having 2 drives.

Are they limited to 2TB? Their website shows nothing above a 1TB drive, so I wasn't sure.

I have to say I really like that they don't price gouge for extra memory, larger drives and upgraded screens.

How is the screen? Able to be seen outside on a sunny day if it is in the shade?

Their web configurator may not offer anything over a 1TB, but 2 TB definitely works. I'm sure anything larger will as well. The main concern will be cooling.

It's a stark upgrade over my last few laptops that had "regular" screens. The 500 nit screen is pretty bright, but not as good as some of the mini-LED options that are available on newer higher end laptops. I've never taken it outside, so take this with a grain of salt. It should be fine outside, but the matte screen might hamper things in peak sunlight. (notebookcheck.net reviews should be your friend on this front.)

And like @Nevarre said, getting 3 hours out of the battery is going to be a push if you're pushing the device. Keeping the dGPU powered off as much as possible will be crucial.

The Framework 16 can accommodate 2 SSDs. The whole thing is ridiculously modular too; easy to fix, easy to upgrade. Framework isn't what I'd call a major brand, but supplying parts for repairs is a big priority for them; their whole business and design philosophy is centered around it. You might look at that.
Sadly, does not have the dGPU performance that OP is looking for, I don't think.

And it's a 2230 size for the 2nd SSD, not a full size 2280, so while the market (thanks Steam Deck!) has more quality options these days, it's still more limited. Plus you need to be careful of 1 sided vs 2 sided in the 2280 slot, since it's above the 2230 slot.

Otherwise...I think it's pretty close, other than the dGPU, for what OP wants.

  • Battery for 3+ hours of heavy usage.
Define heavy usage? For gaming, you'll NEVER get a real gaming laptop with honking dGPU that will run for hours on the built-in battery. If you're talking general compiling/CPU/etc, lots of reading & writing from the storage, etc, then decent chance you can find something. But if you want to play hefty video games with a hefty dGPU on the plane without plugging in for 3 hours, without an external battery? I'd be very curious to hear what can legitimately do that.
