Ah, the transit thing would be useful too I guess. I think some cars let you use it for a key too.

I think in both cases I would rather use a more traditional option though but I can see how some might like it. I think I have just seen too many people fumble and damage their phone or get it stolen when doing that kind of stuff so I am not really comfortable with it.

Curiosity here, do people use NFC for much aside from payment terminals? That's the only thing I have used it for and rarely. I would rather use my card than fumble out my phone. I have seen some headphones use it for pairing quickly but.. meh, bluetooth already pairs nearly instantly so, whatever.
On iPhone here, but NFC is used in two more scenarios for me beyond payments for me: iOS 17 added a feature to tap iPhones together to share content and I've found that doing this is significantly faster than AirDrop scanning when me and my partner want to send stuff to each other. Also, I have a Yubikey for work, but since the iPhone wasn't USB-C until the 15 and I have a 13, I use the NFC capability on the Yubikey to sign into my accounts on the phone.

iPhones are weird with NFC's. They are definitely stricter in what they respond to. But also with Tags that aren't powered they put out very low power or something that prevents them from energizing tags as reliable as non-iphones. But then Apple really only wants them for payment.

And when NFC's were mean to replace QR codes because QR adoption was so low everyone thought that was dead and then Cameras in phones got upgraded to where you can scan high density codes with no problem. I remember when i had to make codes about 1.5 inch square to get phones to reliably decode 30 bytes of data. Now that can go down to 0.5 inches

So payment and active NFC where your phone is transmitting the information is where NFC really will live.

Great point, I forget all about my NFC YubiKey. People on the bug that now has 1000 subscribers also say things like German national ID card and e-card.
European passports and drivers licenses have NFC indeed, it is used as 2FA to prove your identity. Lots of bank apps activate using NFC, that would suck if you had to reset the app for any reason.
