It would be for my nearly 86 year-old mom. Ideally I'd like something that's a pay once thing, not a "freemium" one. I've heard of (but never played) Words with Friends, but that is more a Scrabble thing, right?

Hi. I'm not sure if it works on iPadOS (I use Chromebook), but most major dictionaries have free crossword puzzles online.

New York Times games are free (at least Spelling Bee and Wordle are), and play pretty well on Safari on iOS. Could drop a link onto your mom's home screen!

Thanks for the replies and links. I forgot to mention that my mom has memory/executive functioning issues, which probably excludes something like Quordle (which is amazing and I was playing for a while). Even Wordle seems beyond her, as she keeps forgetting that certain letters have been eliminated. A standard crossword though, she can do.

Not exactly answering the question you are asking, but would a book of crossword puzzles which you use a pencil (or pen if you're brave) be better to help someone with cognitive challenges? It certainly meets the "buy once" requirement, to a certain extent, and there are plenty of options as to difficulty level.
You're likely right. I guess I should see what's available for purchase online, since my time for brick and mortar shopping is pretty limited.

Easy and Medium Crossword Puzzle Book
If she is already a News+ subscriber (through AppleOne sub or separately) they run two daily crossword puzzles, an easy mini (takes me about one minute to complete, on average) and a 'regular' size in varying difficulties. I rarely play the larger but if labeled as "easy" they tend to take me 10 to 12 minutes to complete (or to get fully stuck, unable to progress).
