What's inexpensive in absolute numbers?

I think even a Chromebook might run Audacity decently.

Does your friend mind second hand? (Normally, you can get better hardware for less.)

Does your friend want Windows? (Meaning, Windows 10 is end of support next year, and some second hand hardware won't support Windows 11. These laptops are dropping their price dramatically.)

She was thinking in the 600-700 dollar range but I don’t know if that is even reasonable.

Should be plenty fine. Deals change all the time but as an example I see this one right now for under $400.

Lenovo ThinkPad L14 G3 (Cert. Refurb): 14" FHD IPS, Ryzen 7 PRO 5875U, 16GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, Win 11 Pro $393.99

Yeah, cheap laptops are cheaper than 600-700. Sound shouldn't require a ton of horsepower, so you could get something new decent at that price. ThinkPads, HP (business line), Dell (business line) are the usual recommendations. Wirecutter tends to have good suggestions too.

(I think all new Chromebooks can run Linux applications now. So that'd be a way to run Audacity. But that would only make sense on much tighter budgets.)
